I was perusing Amazon when I just happened to stumble across this set. I haven’t purchased anything LEGO since I was a kid, a decade and a half ago. However, as an outdoors enthusiast who loves to camp (and would love a camper in real life), I just couldn’t resist the set. And, let me tell you, it blew me away.

I haven’t bought anything from the bricklink vendors. I have been slowly sorting my Lego bricks and use the part and set catalogs at Bricklink to reference the part #s, colors, etc. so that I can put them into http://www.rebrickable.com (another site worth looking into).
A quick Google search for “Lego Modulars” or “Custom Lego Modulars” will reveal hundreds of these custom modular buildings ranging from museums to schools; however, here are shown a couple of our favorite (we have done our best to give credit to the original designer when possible).
Fire Brigade (set number 10197), released in September 2009, was the fourth set in the Modular Buildings series. The set contains 2231 pieces, was priced at MSRP US$149/149€, and is recommended for builders 16 years of age or older. Modeled to look like a realistic 1930s fire station, the set includes a bell tower, an opening garage door, a 1930s style fire truck, and 4 minifigures with a fire-dog. Like Green Grocer, all floors in the Fire Brigade set are fully furnished.[15] The Fire Brigade is the first Modular to come with a vehicle, the 1930s-style fire truck. The set also includes some new, unique pieces, such as gold fire helmets and a red sliding garage door.[15]
Let’s escape out of space and back onto Earth, where we’ll take a look at a couple categories we’ve already seen, but thrown together for good measure: expensive sports car models and the Lego Technic series. That’s right—we’re back with the Technic line to take a look at the Porsche 911 GT3 RS model, one of our favorite vehicle models ever put together by the company best known for bricks. If you thought the Ferrari model listed above was gorgeous, the Technic Porsche takes the cake and devours it too. This thing is complete with an adjustable rear spoiler, fully-functioning headlights and taillights, suspension springs underneath the vehicle, fully-customized rims, and even detailed brake calipers. The gearbox works, complete with a movable steering wheel, gearshift paddles, detailed seating, a glove compartment, and a unique serial number. And, of course, as if we even have to mention it—the hood and doors both open, revealing a suitcase in the front and the engine in the rear of the vehicle. Yeah, this thing is gorgeous, and a total collector’s item, as you’d expect for $299. But with 2,700 pieces, the piece-to-price ratio is pretty decent here, and you even get a full-color collector’s book detailing the history of both the Lego Technic series and the Porsche GT line, so your three Benjamin’s go a long way on this one. It’s a hobbyist product, to be sure, but so are all of these Lego products, and this Porsche model is one of our absolute favorites.

I find the Market Village and Fire Brigade dates dubious.. goes against what we have seen in the past from Lego, but if that is what they say maybe something has changed…… Besides I thought that Amazon shows the MMV as discontinued from Lego?
This was the perfect gift for my son. Challenging but manageable and a pleasure for him to build. He could not have been happier. Very impressive looking and through in design and function. The perfect gift and an ideal keepsake with many happy memories for him and for our family.
The old Technic figures were scale restrictive. Today you can build a truck r car at many different scales … not sure TLG wants to build a properly scaled figure for each of the scales … The HUGE collection of technic tire sizes is already pretty …. ‘annoying’ … or maybe not necessary.
Whether you enjoy building and displaying your LEGO works of art and sharing them with friends who also love the classic toys or simply building and rebuilding whenever you see fit, this compilation is well worth exploring. From Disney castles to the Millennium Falcon from Star Wars to the White House to the Seattle Space Needle to toy shops and beyond, there are plenty of super-fabulous options to select from. Spend rainy afternoons erecting LEGO masterpieces…or any other time you are in the mood to “build”! Have fun, and remember to pick up those little pieces! 🙂
For the sellers on Bricklink… this Gazebo would be a parting out dream… 32 blue 2×2 convex corner slopes (45 degree)… 16 blue 2×2 concave corner slopes (45 degree), 8 white curve railing fence pieces, and 4 white Belville arches… all pricey parts in Bricklink at the moment…
My daughter is a fan of the CREATOR series. Her only request is PLEASE MAKE MORE. Of course, the price is a little high, but it is about the same everywhere you find this particular one (fire Brigade 10197), so buying here at least avoids you struggling with the crowds in the mall!!! My daughter has gotten as many creator ones as she can, and she is a teenage girl (girly girl). So for the kids who love playing for hours building, these sets are awesome. When she has a break, she loves to just sit on the floor and build these for hours.
This Creator Carousel Lego set is one of the best Lego sets, and is nothing less than amazing. It should be considered a must have for all serious Lego collectors. The carousel is not just a display piece because it really spins and plays music while the intricately detailed horses and swing boats move up and down! This expensive Lego set also comes with nine figurines and over three-thousand pieces.
Time will tell, but I’m particularly skeptical that we’ll see 10193 Medieval Market Village last through the end of 2012, as it’s already marked as “discontinued from the manufacturer” on Amazon. If Toys R Us — which recently sold out during their sale –doesn’t replenish it’s stock, that will be further indication that the end is near.
If you haven’t checked out Lego sets since you were a kid, you might be pleased to know they just aren’t for children anymore. Just like puzzle sets, there are a ton of Lego sets that are created and reproduced for a teenage or adult audience, those capable of handling the small details and thousands of pieces included in each set. These aren’t small, hundred-piece sets: they’re incredibly challenging, with long manuals and tons of pieces. Some are incredibly difficult to build without the focus and attention that comes with adulthood, while others include pneumatics and other moving parts that are challenging to children to create and enable. Some of them are even themed to suit adults, those of us who have interests in cars or architecture.
My fiance is a big fan of Burton’s Batman Returns so I bought this as a gift for her and she absolutely loves it. The Penguin’s duck boat is awesome and so are the little penguins holding the dynamite. The little Batman submersible thing is neat too, but it’s definitely upstaged by the duck boat.
Yea I understand your point. I REALLY like the sets, and I agree with Martin that they are a must-have for AFOLs but I totally forgot there’s actually 3 sets that are out of production, making things a lot harder. Especially when I consider how long it will take me to save up to get those 3 sets, and by then who knows how much higher the prices will go…but then again…can I afford to wait? Will I eventually be sucked into buying just one then will need the rest? What if another set goes out of production leaving 4 second hand priced sets! Ah the dilemma!!

As to Green Grocer, Cafe Corner and Market Street, I missed those as I honestly didn’t care… and Cafe Corner would or could be the only one I’d regret and pine for some days. Such is life. I do have other themes I’m “gunning” for to collect and I’ll be looking to see what I can afford in the long term.

The hardest part about the collection is obtaining the buildings that are discontinued. Most sets are discontinued 2-3 years after they are released. I was in a similar situation trying to obtain the Green Grocer and Market Street (already owned Cafe Corner). For both of these sets I used Brick Link to purchase each individual part and assemble the buildings. It’s a lot of work, but the Green Grocer set is now my favorite mainly due to the amount of effort I put into creating it.
Thus Market Street is the only set in the series to be released with Lego Factory branding on the box — and as such is sometimes questioned how official it was intended to be as a Modular Buildings entry. This is because it was originally designed by a LEGO fan rather than a Lego designer.[11] Eric Brok, a LEGO fan from the Netherlands, designed the set working closely with LEGO designers.[9]
Modular Buildings is a series of Lego building toy sets introduced in 2007. Created in response to feedback and suggestions from the Adult Fans of Lego (AFOL), and the Teen Fans of Lego (TFOL) community, the sets in this series are generally intended for more advanced builders with most sets containing more than 2,000 total pieces and making use of unorthodox building techniques which have not been tried before in official Lego sets. In contrast to most LEGO sets which are aimed at children and adolescents, the suggested age of most sets in the Modular Buildings series is 16 years or older. The Modular Buildings sets have been received with positive reviews, being considered by Lego designers and fans as “toys for adults”.

It has been criticized because the figures don’t actually fit inside the Tumbler, but that’s not really it’s purpose – it’s meant to be more of an engaging, quality build for adult LEGO fans, rather than something to be played with a whole lot. The Tumbler (set number 76023) is a little harder to find since it was discontinued by LEGO, but can still be found on Amazon for $325 .
Recreate a scene from our favorite superhero’s storyline all while encouraging creativity and STEM skills with the LEGO DC Superheroes Batman: The Penguin Face Off Set. Featuring Batman’s scuba vehicle and The Penguin’s duck boat, your little fan will be able to build and fight the bad guys with two flick missiles.
So what do these box redesigns tell us about the modular buildings series? Well, the simplest conclusion to draw is that the Palace Cinema, Parisian Restaurant, and Detective’s Office are here to stay and the Pet Shop is likely retiring soon. After all, why would LEGO update the boxes of sets just to retire them immediately after? And similarly, why would the Pet Shop be the lone modular using an old box design?
