I mainly collect Technic and Star Wars sets, but I’ve always admired the detail in the modular buildings. Is it worth getting into the modular buildings now that I can no longer get the Town Hall, Emporium, etc. without paying ridiculous prices? I’m not that bothered by missing out on the grocer or firehouse or stuff like that, but the look of the town hall kind of ties a downtown area together and the emporium gave a shopping district. Anyone know if LEGO plans on continuing this series for a long time? Missing 3-4 of buildings won’t be a huge deal if we know that there are going to be 5 or 10 more released in the future.
It’s still a lot of work though, and you have to be careful of prices. Like Puripnon said, the vast majority of pieces are relatively affordable. However, there are some pieces that cost a lot due to being out of production or what not. You will still save quite a bit of money than you would have if you had just bought the set outright.
Making the list as one of the 7 most expensive Lego sets, this stunning model of the Eiffel Town was released in 2007 and is built to 1:100 scale from the original blueprints. This set includes realistic and enchanting features and details such as a flag at the top of the elevators, four lifts toward the bottom of the tower that transport figurines from the base to the center section, and a small, brick-built French flag. It holds the record for the tallest Lego structure produced into a set and contains over three-thousand pieces!
So what do you think? How do you like the LEGO Modular Buildings? Do you own any of them? Which one is your favorite? And which one are you planning to get next? Feel free to share in the comment section below! 😉

My big dilemma is whether to take a gamble and invest in a couple of firebrigades for resell later…I don’t have heaps of spare cash, but I could sit it out for around 6 months or so…perhaps….but in reality I want to spend that money on sets I can play with now!! (I just built the pig farmer, and so now of course I need a farm!)
For all of you who are fans of the sea, this set is a must have. The coast guard boat is actually very large and quite impressive in person. What is probably most appealing about the large coast guard boat is the fact that it floats (the second smaller green boat floats too). Bath time will never be the same… please note, you may want to avoid applying the stickers in this set if you decide to take either of the two boats that float into the water.

The LEGO company at that stage had no idea how much it cost to manufacture the majority of their bricks, they had no idea how much certain sets made. The most shocking finding was about sets that included the LEGO micro-motor and fiber-optic kits — in both cases it cost LEGO more to source these parts then the whole set was being sold for — everyone of these sets was a massive loss leader and no one actually knew. This was combined with a decision to ‘retire’ a large number of the LEGO Designers who had created the sets from the late 70’s through the 80’s and into the 90’s and replace them with 30 ‘innovators’ who were the top graduates from the best design colleges around Europe. Unfortunately, though great designers they knew little specifically about toy design and less about LEGO building. The number of parts climbed rapidly from 6000 to over 12,000 causing a nightmare of logistics and storage and a huge amount of infrastructure expansion for no gain in sales. Products like Znap, Primo, Scala and worst; Galidor all came out of this period.
It’s hard to say what the new piece for 2017 will be. Recently, modular sets for a Library and Natural History Museum were shot down on LegoIdeas.com. Maybe because Lego has it in mind to make those types of buildings next? Also on Lego Ideas, a train station received 10,000 votes and is in the review process (although if approved, that probably wouldn’t be available until 2018). I think a Police Station makes sense, but there is already a lot of police themed lego pieces in the Creator series (plus cops aren’t really getting too much love these days). I think a church is too divisive. If you’re going to include a religious building (and I really don’t see Lego doing this), you’ll have to include a temple, mosque, etc. to be inclusive. I would personally like to see a post office, as many of the modular buildings have mailboxes built into them, and it would make sense to “connect” with that feature. Other thoughts, not on your list would be a restaurant row (maybe a side by side like the Pet Shop and Apartment Building) – one side a Japanese restaurant and the other a pizza place. Also, a Veterinary Hospital (although the Pet Shop covers the animal side of things) would be cool. Also, a Health Club/Gym, Dentist’s Office, Toy Store, Pharmacy, or Ice Cream Parlor are other ideas. I guess a Candy Shop wouldn’t make sense, if candy is “illegal” in the modular world (based on the Detective’s Office).
The Detective’s Office (set number 10246) is the tenth set in the Modular Building line and was released January 1, 2015 at a MSRP of US$159/149€. This set contains 2262 pieces. It contains a detective’s office, a barber shop named “Al’s”, a billiards table “pool” room, and an upstairs apartment. The “Al’s” sign resembles the various brick-built lettering signs from the Pet Shop, Town Hall, and Fire Brigade. The featured “Pool” sign uses a building technique never used before. Inside the pool room features a fan, a pool table, and a dart board. The detective office features clues, a cabinet, and a secret storage space behind a picture. The barber shop features a mirror, scissors, lights, and chairs for customers. The apartment holds an old style toilet and a small kitchen. This Modular varies from previous buildings in that it introduced play features of a secretive or “illicit” nature: it has secret compartments that allow cookie smuggling throughout the building. It also is different because it is the first Modular to have two buildings on the same baseplate (Assembly Square being the other). The front of the building features a newspaper stand, a tree, and 2 balconies. It includes 6 minifigures.
TECHNIC is a LEGO theme primarily based on creating model machines and mechanical toys with specialized beams and connectors. The theme is designed for ages 9 and up, and was first introduced as the Expert Builder series in 1977. In 1984 it was renamed as “TECHNIC”.
The F40 is more of a collectors set than an actual toy to play with, making it ideal for adults to destress and decompress with Lego sets after a difficult day at the office. Unlike the Capitol Building set, Ferrari’s F40 probably isn’t so much a learning experience to share with your children, though if you’re looking to teach your children about the history of non-American sports cars, it’s an excellent entry and might interest the racecar lover in your life. We really love the F40 set from Lego; it’s small, but complex enough to keep you busy for hours and hours. It doesn’t come at a cheap price, but if you can afford to drop a pretty penny on Lego sets, this is a fine one to add to your collection—or to gift to the gearhead in your life.

The “fiber optics” in this this Technic kit are actually clear plastic tubes that connect to a battery-operated LED-light pack. These specialized parts cost more to produce than the set was being sold for.
As a tradition, LEGO will usually announce retiring sets in October. The LEGO Group have done collectors a big favor by revealing some of their upcoming retirements in their Europe website. The list contains a number of interesting sets, such as… Continue Reading →

It may seem bad now that 6/9 modulars are gone, but if you can get one of the retired ones (some stores may have some on hand), you could potentially have half of all the modulars since the Detective’s Office will make it an even 10. If you’re not irritated about missing the first few, I wouldn’t worry about missing a good chunk of them. Personally, I have nothing before FB and I would only pay original list price for any of the ones before it.

I spoke to a gentleman at Lego Direct for around 10 minutes yesterday, and he stated that the agents on the phone do not generally have discontinuation dates made available, nor do they give them out. He said the reason for this was due to competitors. The only item he mentioned he thought was discontinuing at the end of the year, was the latest AT-AT 8129. They also said that the Death Star was now expected to run through 2012.
