It’s still a lot of work though, and you have to be careful of prices. Like Puripnon said, the vast majority of pieces are relatively affordable. However, there are some pieces that cost a lot due to being out of production or what not. You will still save quite a bit of money than you would have if you had just bought the set outright.
I agree, it’s really cool that you got the information– although I’m concerned that these dates may give people a false sense of confidence about delaying to buy certain sets– In other words, what does “discontinued” mean to LEGO?

Ok, so let’s say you just found out about the Lego modular buildings and want to create a really large, super cool Lego town, but the retired Lego modulars are out of your budget – what do you do? Combine multiple sets to create even bigger buildings! The first time I saw this idea was when someone built a second “middle floor” for the Café Corner to make it taller. I thought it was such a cool idea that I bought my own pieces and made an extra floor for my own Café Corner! However, the video below showing a Lego builder combining two identical sets into a single building is ever cooler! Plus, buying two retail sets today is still a lot cheaper than buying one retired set. So, what do you think of the idea?
Pet Shop is supposed to be officially on sale tomorrow. The clock is ticking for the other sets. Since I already have one built of each…. the questions is how many of you who already have one are getting a second Fire Brigade or Emporium?
We work out the trending price by crunching the data on the product’s sale price over the last 90 days. New refers to a brand-new, unused, unopened, undamaged item, while Used refers to an item that has been used previously.
To encourage imagination, fun, and learning, Lego produces dozens of unique Lego sets. There is something for every child: Star Wars fans will find dozens of projects inspired by the starships and characters of the movies.
As to Green Grocer, Cafe Corner and Market Street, I missed those as I honestly didn’t care… and Cafe Corner would or could be the only one I’d regret and pine for some days. Such is life. I do have other themes I’m “gunning” for to collect and I’ll be looking to see what I can afford in the long term.
The Arkham Asylum Breakout set features so much detailed content, with a total of 1,619 pieces. It comes with a total of 8 minifigures: Batman, Robin, The Joker, The Penguin, Poison Ivy, Dr. Harleen Quinzel, Scarecrow and a guard, all with their own weapons, to play around in a creatively realized version of Arkham. It has the front of the Asylum itself, featuring some gothic-style decor, moss, vines, and ice elements for added effect, and a separate security gate.

Early TECHNIC motors used the standard 4.5V system, interchangeable with the Trains theme and consisted of a large brick with a small protruding axle. When the motor is activated, the axle rotates. From 1990 onward, this was changed to the 9V system in line with other LEGO themes. The output rotation has a high RPM, but low torque, so it cannot be used to turn heavy objects without additional gears. Later motors contained a hole into which an axle of any length can be inserted.
During the design of Café Corner (and presumably with the other sets in the series), the designer had to work closely with the building instructions team due to some of the “unorthodox techniques” that he used “which have not been tried before in official Lego sets.”[1]
I love this set. It is complex, intricate and something that kept me amazed for hours while building. With most LEGO sets I take away new, interesting building techniques. With this set I continually thought to myself – “how in the world did someone think of this??” It was a,axing with a ton of nice gear work. I wish there were a lot more set with this much detail and complexity for the adult builder.
The LEGO company at that stage had no idea how much it cost to manufacture the majority of their bricks, they had no idea how much certain sets made. The most shocking finding was about sets that included the LEGO micro-motor and fiber-optic kits — in both cases it cost LEGO more to source these parts then the whole set was being sold for — everyone of these sets was a massive loss leader and no one actually knew. This was combined with a decision to ‘retire’ a large number of the LEGO Designers who had created the sets from the late 70’s through the 80’s and into the 90’s and replace them with 30 ‘innovators’ who were the top graduates from the best design colleges around Europe. Unfortunately, though great designers they knew little specifically about toy design and less about LEGO building. The number of parts climbed rapidly from 6000 to over 12,000 causing a nightmare of logistics and storage and a huge amount of infrastructure expansion for no gain in sales. Products like Znap, Primo, Scala and worst; Galidor all came out of this period.
As is the case with virtually every Lego set, your child will be limited only by his, or her, imagination and perseverance. Although the kit is designed for younger children graduating from Lego Duplos, you can be confident that your child will never actually grow out of the Ultimate Building Set. All of the pieces can be incorporated into future Lego collections.

Lego sets also offer a way for adults to learn through experience. Studies have shown, using Lego sets as an example, that the faculties of the mind learn better through example. As such, having someone showing you how to create an object using Legos can stimulate the creativity in your own brain.

Although liftarms (studless beams) have been present in Technic sets since 1989, the change from primarily studded to primarily studless construction around the year 2000 represented a major paradigm shift and has been quite controversial. Initially liftarms were used primary as styling parts, or to create smaller sub-assemblies which attached to a studded chassis. With an increasing number of liftarm designs introduced, a tipping point was reached around the year 2000 with models introduced primarily constructed from liftarms instead of traditional beams.
Parts of this article (those related to Police sets need to be added: regular (2005, 2008, 2011, 2014), Elite (2013), and Swamp (2015). 2015 Construction sets, 2013 Coast Guard sets, 2015 Great Vehicles, also missing several Accessory and promotional sets) need to be updated. LEGO 10224 Town Hall is the largest modular building, with a whopping 2766 pieces. It had an unusually short lifespan for a modular, as it was released in March 2012 and became unavailable in late 2014, and was officially labelled as a Retired Product by LEGO in early 2015. The size of this unique set and its short life caused its post-retirement value to skyrocket very quickly.
In 1997, LEGO introduced the Air Tank, which acts like a battery, storing compressed air so that even more powerful pneumatic circuits can be created. This piece is very popular with the enthusiast community, but many feel that it was underutilised by LEGO, as it only appeared in 3 model sets and a parts pack. This tank is now only available at the LEGO Education Store, along with a new manometer part.
This is my third modular MOC, but the first I have submitted to Ideas.  My aim was to raise the standard of build by analysing the strengths and weaknesses of the two I’d done before.  I also aimed to increase PLAYABILITY and focus more on what the average Lego user 10-14yrs wants from a set like this.  On top of this I wanted to keep in mind cost implications and whilst I was being more ambitious with the size of the build compared to my first two I wanted to set a ‘brick count’ and achieve the build within a target of 4200.  Less than Tower Bridge 10214-1.  The Final brick count was 4174.
Green Grocer differs from the previous two sets in the series because it has a greater level of detail inside. Whereas Café Corner and Market Street had bare interiors, each floor in Green Grocer contains a prop such as a standup radiator or some furniture such as a grandfather clock. The first floor is fully furnished as a grocery store, with refrigerated shelves with opening doors and cartons of food. The assortment of Lego food pieces in the grocery includes carrots, apples and bananas. There’s also a stairway to the apartment above, and a mailbox set with letters.[14]

Lego’s Architecture line started in 2008, with a focus on perfecting and recreating famous buildings and monuments around the world, for recreation at home. Since its creation, Lego has created 32 full-size Architecture sets, along with 10 special edition sets for companies and campuses around the world. The original few sets were sold in limited sets and focused on minimalism design and artwork, using less than 100 pieces in total throughout the set and displayed in places like The Lego Store in New York City. Since then, they’ve expanded both their availability and the complexity of each set. One such example: Lego’s United States Capitol Building, which focuses on accurately recreating a to-scale set of the Capitol Building in Washington D.C., and uses over 1,000 pieces in total.

A video game developed by TT Fusion called Lego City Undercover was released for the Wii U on March 18, 2013; a port of the game was released April 4, 2017 on Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. A prequel to the game was also released for the Nintendo 3DS on April 21, 2013.[2] Lego City content, based on Lego City Undercover, was added to the toys-to-life video game Lego Dimensions on May 9, 2017, via a “fun pack” containing a Chase McCain minifigure and a constructible Police Helicopter.

Now back to Lego. Technic is mostly bought by or for boys. Boys are interested in technical things, but when you think about something technical like a car, that usually doesn’t involve a human being. A Technic figure is, in it’s essence, a doll. It doesn’t have a real role – Technic figure is no police officer or fire-fighter that a boy would really want to identify with. At best (but he’s lacking the uniform), Technic figure could be imagined to be a crane operator, but this sort of role is harder to imagine because of the lack of a uniform.
At the same time #10218 LEGO Creator Pet Shop is shown as backordered with an expected ship date on the 20th. This set you can actually order online, and it will be shipped to you once it becomes available (in my experience usually much before the expected ship date). This set is not yet close to being retired, however if you want it for Christmas, I would suggest you get it now. A lot of LEGO fans shop for the LEGO Modular Buildings around this time of the year (both because of the Double VIP Points Period and also because people tend to buy larger sets for the holidays), causing the most desirable sets to be perpetually out of stock.
That said, if you have the time and can split the box out by category (be it Star Wars, pirates, Medieval, Technic or whatever) these smaller – more specific – bundles will frequently sell for more than a job-lot of unsorted bricks.
