Don’t get me wrong.  I think LEGO bricks are super cool! I am a sucker for anything translucent and those miniature replicas of real-life objects steal my heart. (we have videocameras, pizzas, goggles, alligators, etc)  I love them just as much as I love those porcelain bathtubs of handcrafted wooden dollhouses. To me, LEGO is its own language – like visual poetry.

“As with any sort of collectible, the safe storage of the collectible is very important,” Ed Mack explains in a piece on How to make money from Lego . “Although the actual Lego brick is pretty much indestructible under normal conditions, the Lego boxes and instructions need special care.”
A few years ago Anne shared with us her tutorial on how to build a Lego table with a LACK table from IKEA (updated images coming soon!). Depending on pricing in your neighborhood, this project should cost less than $35. If you already have the table and plates, then it will be free.
A model like this deserves a great presentation. My first build was done inside a BiOrb (aquarium) and it was a challenge, but turned out really cool. The second build was displayed inside a terrarium from Exo-terra. The terrarium worked out much better. It has doors for easy access and interaction, and has space for the most important thing… A display turntable. Get one that can support about 7-10kg and has an AC adapter.

The components come down to “what’s in the box?”  This is an important aspect of any Lego set, but arguably even more so in a licensed theme like Star Wars.  As a fan of the movies, you know the sets before you start building them.  Sets which have the perfect balance of nostalgia and just plain cool features will inevitably rise to the top for us.  For more info and reviews please visit our friends at Ninja Brick and read their Star Wars reviews.
The LEGO Group has revealed some of their upcoming retiring sets in 2017 on the LEGO Europe store. This is a good indicator those sets will be retired worldwide soon. Included in the list are: Ninjago sets 70605 Misfortune’s Keep… Continue Reading →
The Millennium Falcon set comes in at the top of our list simply because it’s freaking awesome.  It is among the two or three most recognizable images from the entire Star Wars franchise, so it easily checks the nostalgia box.  The set is huge at 1329 pieces and takes a few hours to complete.  Inside the box you get the awesome Falcon itself, complete with the iconic holochess board, cockpit, and even spring loaded blasters.  Additionally, you get a wealth of minifigurines including Han Solo, Chewbacca, Rey, Finn, and BB-8 (you get two more, but who cares about those guys?).  The minor complaint here is that this is The Force Awakens version, so you get old Han, rather than A New Hope Han.  That’s easy enough to ignore, however, with the all-around spectacular set included here.
Is there a good site to keep track of the soon to be retired sets? I know that when the new modular comes out each January, one usually retires to be replaced by it. Was that the case this year? Closest I see is maybe the pet shop or that other similar sized one, but wasn’t sure those were in the ‘modular’ bucket.
Jabba’s Palace 9516 Jabba the Hutt (Re-Designed), Salacious B. Crumb, Oola, Chewbacca, Princess Leia (Boushh Disguise), Bib Fortuna (Re-Designed), Han Solo (Out of Carbonite), B’Omarr Monk, Gamorrean Guard 2012 717
Conclusion: If you can get it for MSRP of $34.99, it’s a buy. I wouldn’t suggest paying collectible prices, as LEGO will undoubtedly be producing more of these, and will probably create different Minecraft sets in the near future. At least I hope they do. I would love to add more modules to this set, and I’ll be interested to see tiny zombies, skeletons, and mob animals.
My son found the Lego City Police Station at Goodwill for $39.99 and it retails for over $100, so of course I let him get it. The good thing about this particular Goodwill was that they let us open the box to make sure all the pieces were there. I also for the Ningago (sp?) sets at the same place. I also we have been able to score sets after Christmas on clearance at Wal-Mart.
Up for sale is a new Lego Star Wars Set 9500 – Sith Fury-class Interceptor. All my Lego sets are genuine Lego. Condition : New in sealed box. Box is in excellent condition, very little shelf wear and …
Let the pieces air dry. Lay the pieces out on a towel on their sides or base so water can drain. Keep in a ventilated room to speed up the drying, but keep them away from heat. They may take one or two days to fully dry, depending on humidity.
Have pieces but don’t know which kit it is from?  If you think they came from one household then chances are that you have lots of the pieces of that kit.  If so, then just go to this LEGO Building Instructions page, punch in some keywords and see what you can come up with.  Maybe you’re only missing a few pieces and it might be fun to build something this way.
You can safely mark this multi-faceted set out as ‘one for the future’. Combining bits from the that’s-no-moon space stations from both Episode I and Episode III, this incredibly popular Death Star includes a massive 24 ‘minifigs’, a multitude of moving parts and classic set-piece areas like the trash compactor and the Emperor’s Throne Room. A fan favourite which, if you do a bit of internet detective work, you can still buy for a reasonable sum – in Lego terms at least.
LEGO is doing some pretty major summer clearance right now at the Online LEGO Shop, including some very nice medium to large sets that are getting retired. Below I will highlight some of the most noteworthy ones, and you can check out the rest at the Sales & Deals section of the Online LEGO Shop. Please note that once stock is out on retiring soon sets, LEGO won’t be making any more, so make sure you don’t miss out. 🙂
If I have lit a shopping spark in you… I’m sorry! ‘Tis a bad habit o’ mine.  But do use my link at Amazon if you plan to shop from there.  Remember your neighborhood toy stores as well! Invest in your local economy- it’s money back to you someway somehow!  Here are some of the links to books and products I’ve mentioned.
If you want to see what sells well, check out Brick Picker—it’s the industry clearinghouse. Its forums and price guide are the best resource online. “It’s just like the stock market,” Maciorowski says, repeating his mantra. “You’ve got to do your research.”
Well, it’s finally happened. I’m afraid that in the end, I just can’t justify the cost of the Sandcrawler or Ewok Village, but being prepared to see desirable sets retire and not go on the hunt for expensive secondary market stuff is the price I pay for keeping my collecting manageable financially. I’ll look forward to what 2017’s sets bring…
Im not sure whats going on, i think they are updating the website. Like the LOTR section doesnt have any of the old sets, the hobbit and other themes have zero listings lol As of last night orc forge was still listed as retiring soon and was “temp out of stock”
As for how we judge sets ourselves, we tend to break it down into two categories:  the build and the components.  We’re like any other Lego enthusiast, we love the build.  It needs to be challenging and engaging, not something that can be pieced together without instructions.  It doesn’t necessarily have to be a huge set, there is often a lot of fun to be had in smaller sets, but the build needs to grab our attention.  Most of those on our list end up being on the longer side for builds, as it’s the nature of the build that sets with more detailed builds will end up more engaging for us.
You forgot that the MechDragon is on sale. But then that’s not really retiring soon. What I don’t understand is why the Vulture Droid, and AT-TE are retiring so early. The V-wing and Vulture droid are 2014 releases even! 😕 Not that I’m complaining, I have the V-wing already and my brother has the AT-TE, so we’re good.
The market for old toys on eBay is much bigger than just Lego. If you’ve got some old childhood clutter just gathering dust, here are 8 ways to tell if your old toys could be worth more then just memories while our guide to getting the most cash when selling old toys on eBay can be found here .
Only photographing your pieces in a box or plastic bag – You can include a photo that shows the pieces in a container or shipping box to give an idea of the quantity, but spreading them out so more pieces can be seen will add value.
I think you’d find that because of specilist parts that are in the UCS models, that as has been said before, require special molds, it wouldn’t be worth carrying on production. They need to modernise after all. So if something’s new then sacrifice something old for it surely ? 🙂

Yes, you can get lucky at thrift stores but you can really increase your chances by shopping Goodwill online!  I honestly don’t think you can get a better deal at buying used LEGO bricks anywhere else. For sure this beats many eBay offerings hands down.
