I also have one pet peeve that is common today… that notch of missing plastic in the macaroni bricks…. I hate it… and that notch is found in so many specialized parts of today. It seems that nearly every new part made today “has to be able to attach to a baseplate”…. like the macaroni bricks…. and therefore has that notch of missing plastic.
Love the blog, and have almost this entire series (missing the original two). Any idea on what the second exclusive set will be? I’ve got the toy set, and just want to know when the second comes out, so I can place another order!
While most people think of Lego as being a toy for kids, the Lego modular series is more an adult line due to its size and complexity. Since the inception of the modular series, AFOL’s (adult fan of Lego) from around the world have been busy building their own variations on the modular theme.

The Green Grocer (set # 10185) was the third release in the modular series and has since been retired. It was the first to be furnished and Lego did an exceptional job at that. The lower level of the shop contains a complete wall fridge in addition to produce stands, cash register, etc. which collectors have just loved. The interior details are almost as good as the exterior elements such as the bay window on the second and third floors and the striped awning over the produce stand.

In late 2007, a new motor system was released. It was named Power Functions, and was first used in the set 8275 Motorized Bulldozer. The system consisted of a set of motors, two infrared receivers, a battery box, and an infrared remote control. One receiver would connect to the battery box, and the other would connect to the motors.
Ok, so let’s say you just found out about the Lego modular buildings and want to create a really large, super cool Lego town, but the retired Lego modulars are out of your budget – what do you do? Combine multiple sets to create even bigger buildings! The first time I saw this idea was when someone built a second “middle floor” for the Café Corner to make it taller. I thought it was such a cool idea that I bought my own pieces and made an extra floor for my own Café Corner! However, the video below showing a Lego builder combining two identical sets into a single larger building is ever cooler! Plus, buying two retail sets today is still a lot cheaper than buying one retired set. So, what do you think of the idea?

For more great pictures and reviews of these wonderful sets, please follow the link at right. I have personally built all of the Lego modular buildings, except for Assembly Square, and the Parisian Restaurant was my favorite build followed closely by the Cafe Corner. Which Lego modular do you think would be the most fun to build?
I built Market Street via Bricklink so I’m well aware of the difficulties. On a positive note, having completed that project has given me an appreciation for those people who create their own creations from bricks sourced through Bricklink or Pick a Brick.

In October 2015, four new sets were released for Toys “R” Us Bricktober. They are 40141 – Bricktober Hotel (204 pcs), 40142 – Bricktober Train Station (180 pcs), 40143 -Bricktober Bakery (234 pcs), 40144 – Bricktober Toys “R” Us store (165 pcs). This time the base is 8×8 and 8×10 (and the boxes are thicker, but otherwise same size). As last time they each includes two vehicles.

Sacrebleu! Recreating this iconic French landmark in LEGO form takes 3,428 bricks. Most of them are titchy and gray. It’s a careful balancing act to get them all together without knocking the whole thing over, as well. This kit is aimed at ages 16 and up, and it’s a very precise and challenging project. Best of luck to anyone out there attempting it!
My impression of the “discontinued” dates listed above is that they’re the projected times when the sets should be removed from the available inventory, assuming they haven’t already sold out. IE, if 10211 hasn’t already sold out before December 2013, that’s the date that they’ll remove it from the catalog regardless. And they’ll probably put it on sale X months before then to try and encourage it to sell out.
Holy crap, is this one’s lovely. And although it might look fairly simple from this angle, it’s actually a properly challenging kit. It consists of 4,634 pieces, and it opens up on hinges to reveal a variety of rooms and staircases within. Once it’s built, though, there are hours of fun to be had. It’s like a ghoulish dolls house! Which is just what you were looking for, right?
LEGO Black Technic Brick 4×6 Open Center Lot of 10 Parts Pieces 40344 LEGO Black Technic Brick 4×6 Open Center Lot of 10 Parts Pieces 40344 Official LEGO brand parts. These parts are all brand new and only handled for sorting, counting, and bagging, never snapped together.
I bought this for my grandson, and my Son says he loved it, that they put it together in one day and he just thought it was the neatest thing. So this is great for any 6-7 year old as a gift. But best to have an adult to help with some of the harder parts. I have 4 Grandsons and all of them are in love with Legos so anything new they will just love.
Personally, I love the entire line (Market Street excluded since it’s neither part of the official line nor up to snuff with the other sets) and have at least one of each. I’m really debating how many of the Pet Shop to get. That town house included with it really opens up the possibility of an entire residential street of a dozen of those models and the pet shop itself can be modified for many other purposes. I would still like to see a police station, city hall, hotel (an actual hotel, not just the sign for one), bank, corner post office, library and numerous other shops like a barber, corner drug store, butcher, baker (no candlestick maker) and corner pub.
Probably the biggest and best kit you can get in the $50 dollar range (I vetted many options). Includes lots of interesting little specialty piece (ice saw, pic axe, etc). My 6 year old nephew would not stop until the entire kit was done. Entire assembly is probably 5 inches tall and 12 inches long or so.
LEGO Technic system has always included a variety of different electric motors. Broadly, these divide into those powered by batteries, held in a connected battery box, or by mains electricity, via a transformer. Battery-power is the most common.
Anyhow, I just wanted to alert you that the LEGO Modular Buildings are selling like hotcakes, and if you want one (or more) for the holidays you better get it now – especially the retiring ones. You can find them all in the LEGO Exclusives or LEGO Hard to Find (sort by price to easily locate them) section at the Online LEGO Shop.
Furthermore, to define what we mean by “biggest” the list considers those Lego sets with the largest amounts of pieces and/or final completed size of the set. As far as “challenging,” most of the sets listed below are suggested for builders aged 16 or older, although I’ve personally seen kids half that age cranking out 1,000+ piece sets with hardly any difficulty.
There has been a few great cars on LEGO Technic, like an Enzo Ferrari. This supercar is an example of how cool it can look… although if you google a bit you will see MOC by people that make this car look like a toy.
I honestly don’t think it’s an issue for you to start collecting modulars now. Personally, the best set they’ve released is the newest one, which is the Parisian Restaurant. It has the intricate detailing and the most interior decoration. I think LEGO will not want to give up producing modulars as they appeal to AFOLS, TFOLS, and kids. It seems they will keep introducing a new one every January for some time to come. The modulars are big and take up a lot of space (and collect dust once they been sitting out for a while). Hence, I have been picking up the ones that really grab me, as I figure if i buy every one that comes along, I will be out of space pretty darn quick (aka- I will have a crisis when I need room for Wayne Manor, the X-Mansion, a hospital, museum, and library!). When I got back into LEGO, the Fire Brigade was still available at S@H, but I passed on it and the other modulars until the Palace Cinema was released. The PC sucked me into the modular line. Not being a completist and not liking clutter, I have been very selective about which modulars I pick up. Right now I have the PC, PR, and Pet Shop. I say, just pick up the modulars that you absolutely love as they’re released (and to hell with second market prices on retired sets). If you really want the GE or TH, buy sooner rather than later as prices will continue to go up as time goes on. If you can live without the TH, just wait and I think another big modular that will tie your LEGO city together will appear somewhere down the line. In my opinion, it’s not worth giving up the modular building experience just because certain ones have already retired. Maybe I am just talking out my a@@, but that’s my long-winded 2 cents. Happy building. 🙂

One of the things we love about the Lego Creator Tower Bridge set is how it combines historical and real-world locations with the fun and excitement that comes with a Lego set. It isn’t cheap, but the Tower Bridge set, similar to the Assembly Square set above, feels great when you’re building it. When it comes to these Creator Expert sets, 4,000 pieces or more seems to be a great balance between scale and complexity, and the Tower Bridge set is no exception. With almost 4,300 pieces, including four vehicles and a completely working drawbridge, this is one of our favorite sets yet. The final set is gigantic, measuring over 40 inches long from start to finish. Needless to say, it might be a bit difficult to find space for this bridge among your collection once you’re complete. One note for those looking for something to do with the kids: these Expert sets don’t come with numbered bags, since part of the challenge of Lego sets is building it into a gigantic, puzzle-like kit. But if you can get over the hump of working without numbered bags, you’ll really enjoy assembling Tower Bridge. We’d love to see Lego branch out and do some additional work on London-themed sets, to build a miniature Lego London. Get on it, Lego!
I mainly collect Technic and Star Wars sets, but I’ve always admired the detail in the modular buildings. Is it worth getting into the modular buildings now that I can no longer get the Town Hall, Emporium, etc. without paying ridiculous prices? I’m not that bothered by missing out on the grocer or firehouse or stuff like that, but the look of the town hall kind of ties a downtown area together and the emporium gave a shopping district. Anyone know if LEGO plans on continuing this series for a long time? Missing 3-4 of buildings won’t be a huge deal if we know that there are going to be 5 or 10 more released in the future.
