Disclosure: Toys are Tools has not been paid by any of the aforementioned parties to write this post about saving you money. However, Toys are Tools has been given admission to help facilitate a review of the The Art of the Brick exhibit. Additionally, the LEGO adventure book was also submitted for review – stay tuned for interviews! Send me questions to ask them.
There’s no magic here. You buy something, it goes up in value (if you buy the right thing), and then you sell it. As Maciorowski explains it: “This is no different from the stock market.” Or the shoe market. Except you’re buying Legos instead of shares of Nike (or actual Nikes). At the same time, the Lego market is different from a lot of postconsumer markets. These aren’t Beanie Babies. Some Lego sets sell for upwards of $6,000 or $7,000. And they’re not just going to magically be worth practically nothing overnight, as happened to the Jerry Garcia Beanie Baby.
Welp, time to bite the bullet on the Ewok Village. Both it and the Sandcrawler are 12% off on Amazon. The Sandcrawler is still a better buy (over 3000 pieces vs. the Ewok Village’s not-even-2000), but the Village seems to be more playable. Honestly, I’m a little surprised the Ewok Village was still around–didn’t it come out in 2013?
Hey, I had the same thought as you. The set it way too expensive to buy and I want to actually have it assembled, not for collecting. Would you be able to share with me how you were able to get all the pieces and obtain the instructions?
➡ LEGO SALES & DEALS: The LEGO Sales & Deals section of the Online LEGO Shop has a lot of the LEGO video games on sale. This includes LEGO Marvel Super Heroes, The LEGO Movie, LEGO The Hobbit, and LEGO Legends of Chima games. Other than these the only things listed right now are a few magnets, and miscellaneous gear. However this section is going to be very busy as we get closer to the end of the year, especially right after Christmas. So make sure you check it regularly. Here is the direct link (and the same link is also available in the right-hand side-bar at all times for your convenience): LEGO Sales & Deals at the Online LEGO Shop
Yeah, it is a good idea to keep a balance. Some sets/themes are worth letting go, other’s are worth to keep. I know many people who greatly regret selling their collection, others are afraid to sell them and are burried under boxes they never even opened. For me the judgement to sell anything (LEGO or otherwise) is that if I haven’t touched it/used it for 6 months, it is time to let it go and have someone else enjoy it. This also opens up space (and money) for new things in my life. So it’s a win-win. 😉
Lego clearly wants to keep the history going as the Star Wars theme is consistently among the upper echelon of Lego themes in terms of the most sets coming out in a year. Part of this is due to the recent and planned theatrical releases of The Force Awakens, Rogue One, and The Last Jedi and, naturally, they still frequently draw from the first six movies in the franchise. Lego doesn’t stop there, however, as the animated shows Freemaker Adventures, Rebels, and Clone Wars all have sets that are not retired as of 2017. Eight movies and three television shows, that’s a lot of source material to choose from. What made it into our top ten list? Find out below.
it’s sad to see them go. but seeing as in the last 9 months we had almost no set’s retired this is no big shock. well a shock to see them all set to go End of line at the same time. but not that we have set’s retiring.
Notable features: Lego’s “Ultimate Collector’s Millennium Falcon” is the largest Star Wars set and the second-largest Lego set ever made. It features Lego figures of Luke Skywalker, Hans Solo, Princess Leia, Chewbacca, and Obi-Wan Kenobi.
LEGO Europe site did it again! After LEGO revealed some of their upcoming retirements in their Europe website in October, they had announced even more retiring sets this week. This list is massive and it includes Star Wars Rogue One, Force… Continue Reading →
LEGO® will relaunch one of the largest sets ever in time of the holidays.  It will be released as set number 10256.  It will sell for $369.99 and will have the same number of pieces as set 10189 released Read more »
Imagine if LEGO gave every set a 1-10 rating indicating its potential as for resale investment and then sent you and email letting you know when a set is being retired and always did a 50% discount for retiring sets. that would be amazing and super easy right?! But then again if they did that everyone and their mother would be investing in LEGO. One of the reasons why LEGO still has investment potential is because its actually pretty difficult so 99.9% of America doesnt stand a chance and making a profit, unless they did a ton of research and even then you still need a “feel” for the LEGO market, and thats not something someone can be taught, its just acquired with years of experience.
But while they are great for specific parts, you should only use this service for a few rare parts you can’t find anywhere else. In my experience BrickLink prices are usually 30-50% below the offical Lego prices, or even more for very common pieces.
➡ LEGO DC SUPER HERO GIRLS SETS ON SALE: Four of the LEGO Super Hero Girls sets are retiring soon and are on sale; the #41232 LEGO Super Hero Girls Super Hero High School, the #41231 LEGO Super Hero Girls Harley Quinn to the Rescue, the #41230 LEGO Super Hero Girls Batgirl Batjet Chase, and the #41233 LEGO Super Hero Girls Lashina Tank. You can find them under the LEGO DC Super Hero Girls section or under Sales and Deals at the Online LEGO Shop.
With no new film in 2003, the number of sets released was reduced to 20 of which 8 were MINI sets (in plastic boxes) featuring iconic Star Wars vehicles from the five films released to date.  Four of these sets came as two packs featuring matched pairs of vehicles such as X-wing Fighter & Tie Advanced (#4484), Sebulba’s Podracer & Anakin’s Podracer (#4485), AT-ST Snowspeeder (#4486) and Jedi Starfighter & Slave I (#4487) — each one of these sets included extra pieces to create a TIE Bomber. The other four Mini sets featured larger vehicles such as the Millennium Falcon (#4488) and AT-AT (#4489). 2003 also saw the release of the largest minifigure to date — Jabba the Hutt — as part of the Jabba’s Palace set (#4480) and also the first large scale AT-AT (#4483). Two USC were also released during the year, the Rebel Snowspeeder (#10129) and the elusive Cloud City set (#10123), the latter of which includes a uniquely printed Boba Fett minifigure which is very hard to find (and one of the few sets I still don’t own).
As your kids grow up, they won’t want to look at a house with 6 different color bricks but I don’t think they realize that this is why they aren’t satisfied with their LEGO stash.  This is one reason why they veer towards the kits.  Their tastes are more complicated. They want art!  But instead of crying as you buy set after set, try committing to a couple of colors and just keep buying those.  Get inspired by Nathan Sawaya’s Book: The Art of Nathan Sawaya or visit The Art of the Brick Exhibit at Discovery Times Square.  If you’ll be there on Sunday August 3rd look out for me!  Read more about Nathan Sawaya in my last post about LEGO Cuusoo and Small Yellow.

Probably a silly question, but can’t Judith buy from the US site? I’ve often wondered. I grew up in Germany and England, so the regional sets would interest me. A central site offering all sets to everyone would be nice.
The King’s Castle is a fun build appropriate for LEGO fans ages 7 to 12. Build it a section at a time, then put it all together. Then add the King, the White Knight, and the other mini figures to complete the model. Collect and combine with other LEGO Castle sets even more adventure. With weapons, multiple rooms to play in, and much more, the King’s Castle is the perfect place for adventure. This set comes with the King, the White Knight, two King’s soldiers and three Dragon soldiers. Set up the mini figures however you like and then it’s time to defend the castle. All LEGO Castle sets are compatible with all other LEGO System sets. The King’s Castle is filled with exciting places to visit and special features. Check out the towers, prison, moveable staircase, hidden escape door, weapon rack, King’s throne, knights’ table, battering ram/catapult weapon, and more. Extras make this set even more fun to build and play with, including two shields, a treasure chest, three swords, a spiked mace, an axe, a crossbow, and a bow with quiver.

You can find some really great sets on sale like the #70595 LEGO Ninjago Ultra Stealth Raider, the #70605 LEGO Ninjago Misfortune’s Keep, the #70604 LEGO Ninjago Tiger Widow Island, the #70603 LEGO Ninjago Raid Zeppelin and more. You can find them under the LEGO Ninjago section or under Sales and Deals at the Online LEGO Shop. Sometimes small and simple can be good things.  This set is very basic, consisting of 282 pieces, many of which are minifigurines and Droids.  The set replicates the scene in Revenge of the Sith where Anakin is transformed into Vader.  The Emperor is included as a minifigurine along with Anakin, Vader, and two Droids.  This is a quick build, but the payoff is fantastic.  Getting to lower Anakin and flip the table over to reveal Vader is an incredibly simple, but fun moment to experience in the Lego world (manually adding his helmet in extreme slow motion is totally optional, but highly recommended).  What this set lacks in size and depth it more than makes up for in fun and cool accessories.   Many of the classic Lego Star Wars sets are now discontinued, with some of the vintage build-your-own kits having appreciated in value to the point where it might be cheaper to construct a real-life Death Star instead. One these that I’m sad to see go is the LEGO Master Builder Academy series. I own all four levels and highly recommend them (you can read my review on the sets here: New LEGO Master Builder Academy Available!). They are a great way to systematically learn advanced building techniques with LEGO, and the parts-selection is also excellent. Kids, teens and adults can all find value in this well thought out series. It never became available outside the USA even though there is an international demand. If you support your hobby by reselling LEGO sets, I would suggest that you seriously consider adding these to your inventory. Even buying them at full price will leave you plenty of room for profit when the sets get fully retired as LEGO fans and collectors will still be looking for them. You can find the sets at the Retiring Soon section of the Online LEGO Shop. LEGO Mos Eisley Cantina is a popular Star Wars set, and last call is coming in the near future for this original trilogy model. This set is a highly recognizable depiction of a classic Star Wars scene, and that has… Continue Reading → [redirect url='http://Discontinued-Items.com/bump' sec='7']
