^– if you call Lego 10 different times you will most likely get at least 5 different answers… some Lego customer reps are more knowledgeable than others BUT I still think this list does not add up…
We gave this to our son for 8th birthday. It was challenging for him, which is good. He stuck with it and after rebuilding a couple of parts to get it right, he was finished. I liked that it was challenging becuase he usually rushes through a LEGO set and he has extra pride in this one. There is a working elevator that changes Bruce Wayne into Batman and other cool features. My son LOVES it!! As always with LEGO, is is well-constructed.
I also have one pet peeve that is common today… that notch of missing plastic in the macaroni bricks…. I hate it… and that notch is found in so many specialized parts of today. It seems that nearly every new part made today “has to be able to attach to a baseplate”…. like the macaroni bricks…. and therefore has that notch of missing plastic.
I’ve just asked Lego Direct about it, while on the phone to them placing an order, and I spoke to a most apologetic man, who said that he had no idea when sets were retired, but Exclusives were normally 3 years and normal sets 2. I don’t know if you just got lucky with who you spoke to on the phone @winter_zombie, or maybe they were wildly speculating. He said the Death Star had been around for ages and was still going strong which would imply that he hasn’t heard of it going anytime soon. I have to admit I was hoping that the DS and EN would be included in the sale, but no luck…
The very reason people are scrambling to collect the sets after they have been retired is because they didn’t do so while they were in production, for any multitude of reasons. As an example, some of the Star Wars UCS sets — 10143 Death Star, for example — were discounted by LEGO for many months before they was discontinued. If the stock was really flying off the shelves, that wouldn’t have been the case.
The Lego Fire Brigade would be very fun, educational and durable toy if ours had worked out well and had all its parts! Strangely enough, our set needed to be returned to Amazon because we could not build successfully with the parts missing! My daughter and I build lots of Lego sets! We never had any parts missing once over the years!! Never! This was a fluke! Amazon sent out another set! To our surprise, the same parts were missing!! Now we knew we had a missing part epidemic!! Amazon accepted another return and refunded my money this time! Amazon did a review of the situation and halted selling this set until their review was completed! I couldn’t buy the Fire Brigade again!! I never built this set…….yet!!
I would suggest that if anyone here likes the modular buildings that they buy them before they become discontinued and reach ridiculous prices as we see with the first 3 sets. I would go on to even recommend that you not only buy 1, but buy 3. One for yourself, and sell the 2 sets for the other people like yourself who decided that they didn’t want to go into this theme, but then caved in.

As a fan, however, it’s very difficult to tell how well a LEGO set sells for the company. Just because the aftermarket cost is high doesn’t necessarily mean that there are a LOT of people still demanding a set for the MSRP.
This LEGO Creator incarnation of London’s Tower Bridge is an absolute beauty. And with it’s 4,287 pieces and moving parts (the bottom bit of the bridge opens up, of course), it’s definitely not a walk in the park. It does come with a cute little London bus, though, and promises one hell of a sense of achievement to any who manage to master it.
The following graph shows the lifespans of all modular buildings, both retired ones and currently available sets. Using this data from past sets, we can better assess the retirement risk of currently available modular buildings.
