If you have some who like to build in your family, thus is the toy for them. Teaches fine motor skills and how to follow directions. It also gives them the satisfaction of knowing they made this themselves. We have many lego products and will continue to purchase.
So my question is, should I pass on this theme as a whole, or jump in right now and start relocating my assets to get the three sets that are still out. How many people out here are collecting them and how many pass them up based on price or lack of interest? Again I don’t have many city sets, (currently the only city sets I have that are complete and constructed are the City Small Car (3177), and Camper (7639)). But then again, it would be an excellent display for many Collectible Minifigures, which I collect avidly.

I have personally built all of the Lego modular buildings, except for Assembly Square, and the Parisian Restaurant was my favorite build followed closely by the Cafe Corner. Which Lego modular do you think would be the most fun to build?
Like yourself, it is easy to look back and wish for the older sets (in my case the Fire Brigade and the Grand Emporium). But I look at it this way: The Pet Shop was my first modular and so my collection will start from there and I will buy everyone from there on “up”.
I’ve resisted the modulars, until a week ago when I caved in and ordered the Fire Brigade. I’ve no doubt that I’ll also buy the Emporium and the Pet Shop now too. As for whether I go back and collect the rest, I’m not sure yet, I think I’ll just keep an eye out and if a bargain comes up I’ll probably get it.
This set has incredible detail, and is fun to build. I built this set (Dad), and each of my boys built the other two (Fire Brigade and Pet Shop) . The build was enjoyable, and it was fun to watch them come together. in fact, we enjoyed it so much, that we started building the sets on a Sunday morning together, and we all stayed with it until the sets were done a few hours later. It was a fun family project.
I recently picked up Pet Shop and as a completist will likely be BrickLinking the retired modulars. Do you know if there is a guide or any other info on the rare/expensive pieces I should be looking out for? If not, I don’t mind doing things manually (and I know of programs like Brickficiency that can help).
An absolute classic, the Grand Carousel consists of 3,263 pieces, and thanks to an in-built motor it can actually rotate. And it plays music while it does. It’s intended for aged 16 and up, and it would look great in any LEGO collection. Fun fact: It comes with an ultra rare extra large baseplate. What more motivation do you need?
My of the “discontinued” dates listed above is that they’re the projected times when the sets should be removed from the available inventory, assuming they haven’t already sold out. IE, if 10211 hasn’t already sold out before December 2013, that’s the date that they’ll remove it from the catalog regardless. And they’ll probably put it on sale X months before then to try and encourage it to sell out.
The Dynamic Duo Funhouse Escape sure is fun. It comes with Batman, Robin, The Joker, the Riddler and Harley Quinn, as well as a Batcycle and the funhouse itself. It’s a surprisingly-intricate building, with wagon rails, a crane, a hammer, an opening trap door and a very easy to use, moving floor. The whole thing is 8” tall and 11” wide, with the Batcycle coming in at 4” long. It’s just a really action-packed set, especially considering it’s only 380 pieces and can still be found on Amazon for under $100 .

Brick Bank (set number 10251) is the eleventh set in the Modular Building line and is the shortest Modular in height and the fourth block corner building. It was released on January 1, 2016 and priced at MSRP US$169/149€. This set contains 2380 pieces. Like the Palace Cinema it contains only two furnished floors (albeit with high ceilings compared to the norm).

It was also stated that LEGO is planning to release more Modular sets in the future. There’s no mentioning of which sets will be coming but for now, at least we don’t have to resort to BrickLinking parts to recreate them. Check out the full press release below as well as an image of the sets.

Lego helpfully make all of their instruction sheets downloadable for free from Lego.com. (This doesn’t stop people on eBay trying to sell the instruction booklets for a  good price, however. Buyer beware!)  If you have a good supply of Lego bricks already, you could start by downloading the plans of a coveted Harry Potter set, and see how many of the pieces you already have. Probably most of them, but the colors might not be exact. But here’s the thing: don’t get caught up with being exact. Kids don’t let a desire for 100% accuracy get in the way of play. One of my daughter’s friends saw the multi-colored Hogwarts we built and exclaimed “A rainbow castle! How cool!” That reminded me kids aren’t as uptight as adults about collecting or having things perfect.
