The asylum is over 12” tall and 13” wide, and has opening cell doors, a special Poison Ivy cell with transparent doors, a Mr. Freeze ‘icy tower’ room, Dr. Harleen Quinzel’s office and changing room, a medical treatment room and a security reception area, while the security gate has opening double doors and a security camera. There’s a security van, too, with opening back doors, a removable roof, and a stretcher. That’s a whole lot of awesome stuff all packed into one set (number 10937), and it can still be found on Amazon for $299 .

As of late 2015, there are currently four modular buildings available for sale, with a new one — 10251 Brick Bank — set to be released in January 2016. LEGO has introduced one new modular building each year, and they generally retire one each year as well, with the oldest available one always retiring first. Earlier this year, we wrote an analysis of why the Pet Shop is likely retiring soon, and the latest Creator Expert box updates support that, as you will see below.

I really want the Parisian Restaurant, and then the Palace Cinema. Now would really be a good time to get one (or both). But, alas! I have no money to spare for them, because the Unexpected Gathering is at the top of my list. I’ll be getting that in November/December, maybe I could snag one of the second holiday sets. 😕

Featuring Batman’s scuba vehicle and The Penguin’s duck boat, your little fan will be able to build and fight the bad guys with two flick missiles.
The old Technic figures were scale restrictive. Today you can build a truck r car at many different scales … not sure TLG wants to build a properly scaled figure for each of the scales … The HUGE collection of technic tire sizes is already pretty …. ‘annoying’ … or maybe not necessary.
It looks like an RV. This isn’t one of the blocky, square, thrown-together-in-eight-steps vehicles I remember from my childhood; this is a vehicle that you’d be excused for mistaking it as real at first glance. The lines are fluid and very RV-like, and the decals not only match the green and dark tan lines on the sides but look like they could very easily be the decals gracing a real-life RV. The hanging side mirrors are also a very clever touch. But, for all its realism, it hasn’t lost any playability. I would have loved this set as a kid. The side swings open and the top pops off for ease of play, the canoe fits securely on the top, and I absolutely love the design of the double bed in the “back”. The cab can easily be modded so that the driver is on the right side instead of the left, for our fellow LEGO fans across the pond. As you can see in the photo I’ve uploaded, all of the canoe paraphernalia (the oars and lifejackets) fit easily in the roof compartment. (My set came with three oars instead of the expected two, I suppose in case I lost or broke one.) The canoe itself is also extremely well manufactured — a solid block of plastic, it’s shaped like a canoe and is very sturdy, not flimsy at all, and could easily fit three minifigs instead of just the included two. Speaking of minifigs, the included couple is cute, with very attractive “outdoorsy” outfits and dynamic facial expressions.
I agree, the date for Fire Brigade just doesn’t seem right. If it were following the trend of the previous sets in this theme it would discontinue around December this year. I would also think the Grand Emporium would discontinue in December 2012 instead of 2013 while the date for the Pet Shop seems correct.

From my experience with LEGO, I don’t think they’d go so far as to make more copies of the set if it sells out within a “reasonable” amount of time from the discontinue date– they’d just say “sorry, sold out” and be done with it. If (say) 10211 sold out in July 2013, I expect they’d just end it there– they wouldn’t do another production run just so they had some available through the “discontinued date” of December 2013. But if they ran out in (say) February 2012, maybe they’d consider doing another production run, since it would be nearly 2 years away from the expected discontinuation.
Modular Buildings is a series of Lego building toy sets introduced in 2007. Created in response to feedback and suggestions from the Adult Fans of Lego (AFOL), and the Teen Fans of Lego (TFOL) community, the sets in this series are generally intended for more advanced builders with most sets containing more than 2,000 total pieces and making use of unorthodox building techniques which have not been tried before in official Lego sets. In contrast to most LEGO sets which are aimed at children and adolescents, the suggested age of most sets in the Modular Buildings series is 16 years or older. The Modular Buildings sets have been received with positive reviews, being considered by Lego designers and fans as “toys for adults”.
lego said “”discontinued”” this means it will not be for sale on the lego web site after that date and if you wanted any of the sets the only way would be from retail shops that had it still in stock or auction sites like ebay.
Also, when it is a line of products people who got into the game late will want to purchase the earlier models. If you just found out about Fire Brigade and Emporium, you looked into it and found out about Cafe Corner being an earlier set in the line, you’d might really want to get one.

I’ve tried to make it a challenging interesting build with plenty of S.N.O.T. (studs not on top) building on the buildings facade.  There are lots of Lego Technic elements integral to the structure and the 1st floor stairwell is supported by Bionicle elements.

Stafford considers the Galidor line to be Lego’s most heinous offense. Based on a kid’s show of the same name, the line was basically an action figure series with awkward features like interchangeable arms for characters. Each set in the line featured specialized pieces, which were expensive to produce and in practically no way resembled a Lego product.
TECHNIC Figures are figures that appeared in TECHNIC sets, especially from the CyberSlam/Competition line. They were first introduced in 1986 in the Arctic Action line, and were produced until 2001. They are much larger and have several more joints than the standard minifigure, including bendable elbow and knee-joints. Each figure comes already assembled and is not meant to come apart, but parts can be popped off by pulling too hard. They can connect to both standard LEGO System bricks and on TECHNIC parts, and TECHNIC pegs can fit in their hands. 27 different kinds of Technic figures were created,[6] some sets included the same figures but with different accessories and stickers.

Since its introduction, different subthemes under the City banner were used to tie together related sets, such as Police, Coast Guard, Emergency, Airport, Road Rescue, Trains, Fire, and Harbor. During the Christmas season, a City-themed Advent Calendar set is sold through the online Lego Shop and at retailers.
There have been scheduling challenges faced in the design of the Modular Houses sets. For the Green Grocer set, the designer believed that the set could have benefited from another design iteration before release. The detailed nature of these sets requires a greater amount of design time than a normal Lego set. It is expected that future sets in the series will not suffer from such schedule pressures.[10]
Space (City) is the third attempt at depicting contemporary efforts in space. The theme was preceded by Shuttle Adventure, which was released in 2010 under the Lego Exclusives line to coincide with the retirement of the Space Shuttle. The set proved to be extremely popular among children and was re-released in 2011 as Shuttle Expedition with several re-designs to improve playability.
Arkham Asylum is a fantastic set. Absolutely! I think almost any set that you want to include that “fits” modular building works. I don’t want to say it, but in some cases, even Olivia’s House might be ok.
Some of those sets that are getting retired are in the LEGO Creator Modular Buildings series. We have discussed the sets many times (see the LEGO Modular Houses section) as they are very popular with teen and adult LEGO fans. The #10197 LEGO Creator Fire Brigade set was retired last year, and the #10211 LEGO Creator Grand Emporium is also now considered retired. You may still be able to find this set at official LEGO stores, however online it is shown as sold out.
Interestingly the #10224 LEGO Creator Town Hall is also shown as sold out. I have bought this set a few days ago when it was shown as backordered, as well as the #10243 LEGO Creator Parisian Restaurant – there was a few days of delay, but I have received both sets with no problems. At the time I placed the order I was told that the #10224 LEGO Creator Town Hall will be back in stock on the 16th, so I’m curious why it’s showing as sold out right now. There has been rumors that this set will retire early, so this may in fact be the end. If you are interested in this set I would highly suggest that you call LEGO’s customer service right now before it is too late.

I wanted to build a big set, and display it at my house. So, off to google we go, and search Biggest Lego set EVER. Mmmhh… the Taj Majal it’s not what I have in mind for a Star Wars related set. Lego City is a theme under which Lego building sets are released. As the name suggests, Lego City sets are based on city life, with the models depicting city and emergency services (such as police and fire), airport, train, construction, and civilian services.
I think a hospital or school might be too large. Instead of a hospital I could imagine a health clinic (pharmacy, dentist, general practitioner) . Instead of a school I could picture a childcare centre (play equipment, nursery, kid’s art projects).
Not the best set for adult collectors, though my kids did like it for all the animals included within — a dog, a crab and THREE sharks! The build for the Coast Guard boat is okay. It’s designed to be a bathtub toy, so the base of the boat (the entire white area from the deck on down) is just one gigantic plastic piece. The lettering and graphics you see are stickers as opposed to being printed on, and I can’t imagine they’ll last long after being played with in water.
There’s a difference between boys and girls. Yeah, I mean, beyond that one difference. If you give male and female monkeys toys and you give them toy cars and dolls, the male monkey will generally start playing with the car, even if they have no proper understanding of what a car even is. It has moving wheels, it can be pushed down slopes, it speaks to the technical part of the brain. The female monkey will more likely pick up the doll. The “caring” instinct.

My 8 year old son got this for his birthday and loved it. It went together pretty easily for him. It is a little slow moving but works beautifully. Maybe a little pricey for the use that it will get, but otherwise a winner.
On 27 October 2014, Cartoon Network aired the television special Lego DC Comics: Batman Be-Leaguered which details Superman wanting to recruit Batman into the Justice League while he is fighting Penguin and other villains over a gem, but he refuses the league. When Superman mysteriously goes missing, Batman recruits Flash to help find him. With nothing to report, they run into Captain Cold, who is trying to steal an Atlantean pillar in a desert. After a fight which results in the Batwing getting destroyed and Flash mysteriously disappearing, Batman defeats Cold, only for him and the pillar to go missing as well. He goes to Aquaman in the sea, who fights Black Manta for the trident of Poseidon, but he goes through a similar situation, where Aquaman disappears, Batman defeats Manta, and then he and the trident are warped away. Realizing that the Justice League is the target and not the artifacts Batman goes to Wonder Woman and Cyborg, who are fighting Luthor in Metropolis. As Luthor reveals an anonymous buyer wants the daily planet globe, Wonder Woman and Cyborg disappear, leaving Batman to defeat Luthor, only for him and the globe to disappear. Batman realizes that the plot was by Bat-Mite and it was to abduct the members of the Justice League and so that Batman can be the number one superhero in the universe.[3]
Axles – Axles, sometimes known as cross axles, are cross-shaped rods. They are most often used in rotating parts. When inserted into beam holes, they can turn freely. Like beams, axles are measured in stud lengths; axles with even lengths are colored black, and axles with odd lengths are colored grey. There are some specialty axles that are colored differently.
You could also go a different direction and throw the Parisian Restaurant in there and say you have a multicultural center with French, Japanese, and Chinese. And the pool hall in the Detective’s Office is called the Highlander, so maybe some Scottish?

TECHNIC did not introduce gears or cross axles. The first gears were introduced in 1965 and were available only in North America as they were manufactured under license by Samsonite.[1] They had round holes in the centre, as the cross axle did not exist.
The Lego community needs a company to track theme and set popularity like They do for network tv. Then we could have a bubble watch for themes or sets that are hovering on the abyss of discontinuation. :o)

Cylinders look like pumps, but they are the outputs of the energy, rather than the inputs. There are five versions of cylinders. The Generation 1 cylinders came in two lengths, only had one input and worked on pressure or vacuum. The Generation 2 cylinders have 2 inputs (and come in studded, studless, and small versions), and work on pressure in both directions. They allow pushing and pulling, depending on which input air is pumped into.
I’ve resisted the modulars, until a week ago when I caved in and ordered the Fire Brigade. I’ve no doubt that I’ll also buy the Emporium and the Pet Shop now too. As for whether I go back and collect the rest, I’m not sure yet, I think I’ll just keep an eye out and if a bargain comes up I’ll probably get it.
So why does City/Friends/etc include minifigs? Because here you’re making up a story and the minifigs have a role. That’s why there are so many and why they have so many uniforms and clothing. It’s like directing your own movie. With City/Friends/etc you’re not the operator. No vehicle is remote controlled (apart froms trains, but they are borderline Technic), moving parts only move when you move them directly with your hand. You guide their lives, you help them, but you will not “be” them. In Technic models, you are in control. So Technic figure can’t be. So it wouldn’t sell as well if there were figures in the models.
The United States Capitol Building is a great choice for anyone with an interest in American politics or history. The set includes a collectible booklet that will tell you all about the impressive architecture of the original building.
After reading about how people missed out on the first modular buildings, I am so happy I have all the sets in the line, including Market Street. For those people who have not purchased modular building yet, I strongly recommend buying Fire Brigade and Grand Emporium as soon as possible. Right now half of the modular building are available at RRP and as mentioned before are a good value considering the low price per piece ratio. When the sets retire, aftermarket prices are likely going to soar. The two sets are poised to retire. There is a reason these sets are in such high demand: they are very well designed.
I’m guessing 10199 is discontinued – for good this time. It was supposedly discontinued the first time in, what, December 2009? Then re-released the following year, along with the release of the Winter Bakery. Some argue it’s just a seasonal release, but you can get the Winter Bakery right now.

In 1997, LEGO introduced the Air Tank, which acts like a battery, storing compressed air so that even more powerful pneumatic circuits can be created. This piece is very popular with the enthusiast community, but many feel that it was underutilised by LEGO, as it only appeared in 3 model sets and a parts pack. This tank is now only available at the LEGO Education Store, along with a new manometer part.
It’s becoming more and more well-known: grownups love LEGOs too! Over the past few years, the sets available to us “big kids” are becoming more elaborate and frankly, quite impressive. This growing trend inspired us to create the top 10 best LEGO sets for grown-ups, a comprehensive list featuring the coolest adult-worthy sets of today.

LEGO kits don’t come much more difficult than this: the second Death Star consists of 3,417 pieces, plus it has a ‘half-finished’ state as its intended final look. Tough stuff! Once you’ve constructed this technological terror, you’ll want to put it in pride of place. Thankfully, it comes with a little stand to let you do just that.
In 1989, the LEGO pneumatic line was revamped, and a new cylinder and pump piece were introduced. The old cylinders and pumps were discontinued. The chief difference is that the new cylinder had two input valves now, which allowed both pushing and pulling without needing complex circuits involving the distribution block piece. The Generation 2 cylinders also had metal rods so that they more closely resembled real hydraulic cylinders.
The set is sturdy enough for the kids to play with, they loved that the stories of the building are removable and basically turn into their own ‘set’ to play with. The details inside the fire-station are great.
We’ve covered classic architecture builds, amazing sports car models, extravagant toy sets, and so much more throughout this list—but what if you’re looking for something a bit more simplistic feel to it, while still retaining a real world feel, the Lego Creator 10th Anniversary Assembly Square set is one of our absolute favorites, with a complicated build that involves over 4,000 pieces to complete a full city block, buzzing with as much life and excitement as you’d see anywhere else. The Assembly Square set might not be as realistic as the Capitol Building, but it is an expert build—filled with eight minifigures, glossy floor panels, and accessories you won’t see in any other set, including mini pretzels, telephones, a baby carriage, a small chihuahua, and beautiful storefront signs. When complete, the set is large enough to stand over a foot tall, a foot wide, and nearly 10″ in depth. It might not be as creative or interesting as something like Lego Batman’s Arkham Asylum set, but for the right builder, Assembly Square is an intense, expert-only design that will keep you busy building for months on end.
Yes. I definitely think that the current price for CMF is higher than their intrinsic worth, therefore we have a classic bubble on hand. It will burst at some point. However, I think the S1 and even S2 figures, on the other hand, are not overvalued and were not overvalued during the original sale run. Since S1 and S2 saw shorter manufacturing runs, the figures are more rare. Also being the first sets of its kind provide the added value we see with such objects like a first edition book. When we got to S3, the levels of production increased making the items less rare. Pricing increased as well making purchase less compelling. If you’re looking at CMFs as an investment, I don’t think they really are anymore.
The creator series Big Ben is an unimaginably accurate model that will take multiple days to complete. The set has been designed and scaled to pair with Lego’s Tower Bridge, so you may continue the fun after you have completed the build.

Lego’s Technic line is a series we haven’t mentioned in this list up to now, but it’s worth taking note of if you’re seriously into pneumatics and building what amount to movable puzzles. In addition to the standard Lego pieces that you expect from the block company, their Technic line—originally called Technical sets when it was created in 1977 before being renamed in 1984—utilizes a series of interconnecting plastic rods and parts to build vehicles and other movable machines that are really fun—and challenging—to create. If you’ve ever used a Mindstorms Robotic series, you’ll know what Technic line is similar to, without the additional programming involved in robotics. This Mercedes-Benz Arocs set is one of the coolest kits we’ve ever seen: it features modular cylinders, valves, gears, and pumps, along with an engine and a power box to power the on-board crane that can reach up to 57cm in the air. Seriously, this thing is cool—and at $245, it isn’t cheap either. But the entire kit includes over 2,700 pieces, making it one of the largest and highest-detailed kids on our list. If you’re looking for something to experiment with, this Mercedes-Benz set will keep you challenged for weeks as you assemble and build a movable pneumatic structure.

Lego discontinues sets for a lot of different reasons… Mostly because of demand for parts I am sure, they cannot thin out their lines to keep 1000 more sets in production, plus sets get old, they do.. most people buy one and they want to see the next one out.. therefore if they were to make more of them then no one would buy.. and no, only selling 3 sets to people over 1 year is not their idea of good sales…. Then they would need to list a lot of their warehouse for 50% off.. again not something they want to do…. I mean look at the steamrollers and pig farms, which would not die… I think the biggest reason is to keep the lines fresh.. not to mention sets can come back at times (see the Metroliner, Main street, Black Falcons Fortress and Guarded Inn and recently the Maersk Container ship).
An absolute classic, the Grand Carousel consists of 3,263 pieces, and thanks to an in-built motor it can actually rotate. And it plays music while it does. It’s intended for aged 16 and up, and it would look great in any LEGO collection. Fun fact: It comes with an ultra rare extra large baseplate. What more motivation do you need?
It may seem bad now that 6/9 modulars are gone, but if you can get one of the retired ones (some stores may have some on hand), you could potentially have half of all the modulars since the Detective’s Office will make it an even 10. If you’re not irritated about missing the first few, I wouldn’t worry about missing a good chunk of them. Personally, I have nothing before FB and I would only pay original list price for any of the ones before it.
Bring new and exciting play possibilities to existing LEGO sets, with Series 17 of the LEGO Minifigures Collection, featuring the Hot Dog Vendor, Elf Maiden, Butterfly Girl, Circus Strongman, Veterinarian, Battle Dwarf, Dance Instructor, Gourmet Chef,…
6. A few pieces were missing in stage 2. Not many, and some we could substitute from other pieces he had…but 3 pieces were unique and vital to hold together a decorative feature on the face of the building, and no doubt we will have to call for those, too.
A T-junction is a very small piece that allows three pieces of tubing to connect into one junction, essentially splitting (or joining) airflow from two hoses into one. These only allow 1:2 branching, but by combining T-junctions, any number of branches can be achieved (i.e.: one tube can branch into three by using two T-junctions).
The Fire Brigade (set # 10197) has a furnished interior but is unusual in that it only has two floors instead of the usual three. This is due to the first floor having raised ceilings to allow for the entrance of the fire truck. The top floor is superbly decorated with a small kitchen and recreational area including a couch and ping-pong table for the firefighters! The fire truck has some wonderful vintage details and the bell and water barrel on the roof and American flag on the front really add to its overall charm.
Also known as Dark Shark II or Black Skull, this Lego set is pretty detailed as the aftcastle can be accessed by opening its sidewalls as well as detaching a piece of the poop deck. You can also move the rudder by turning the steering wheel! One customer wrote, “…there is no set that can beat the Skull’s Eye Schooner.” This set is definitely in the running to be one of the best Lego sets because it has a plethora of cool features such as a compass next to the steering wheel and an odd postbox where you can find a glass and a gun.
@slovakiasteph – if you’re not near a LEGO store with a winter toy shop, you could always try calling them and have them ship one to you. Most stores I’ve called are willing to do this. Or you can watch Amazon. It pops in stock every now and then. I’m a bit of a toy shop hoarder, so I check Amazon a lot for this one. Others do as well, and there is a thread on ToysNBricks (http://www.toysnbricks.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=3235) for it. I can try and remember to update this thread as well.

Agitate in soapy water. Place the separated LEGO bricks in a container. Add lukewarm water and a little dish soap or other mild detergent. Agitate the bricks gently, stirring them around with your hand.
Thanks to Sharon’s advice, years ago I bought the girls a large pink brick box on Christmas sale. The brick box contains starter pieces for building that can be combined in a number of ways. It doesn’t lock the child into building one particular thing, like the Shelob Attacks set that one of them had requested.
“Brian’s Toys (brianstoys.com), founded in 1994, has primarily been a retailer of Star Wars, G.I. Joe, Transformers, and Marvel toys and collectibles for the last 18 years. We started selling LEGO sets about 4 years ago and are now aggressively purchasing sealed (and opened boxes with new, unused contents) LEGO sets.
There are a lot of reasons that LEGO might stop producing a set, and I would assume it’s a balance between the cost of doing production runs of the necessary pieces, the projected volume of sales, and their availability of SKUs.
The palace build itself is divided into sections, each of which has its own polybagged pieces, making it easier to find the pieces you need (and to limit the mess created, if you’re a parent who cares about such things). The build itself is quite straightforward, mixing regular Lego System elements with a few Technic parts. It is interesting and enjoyable without being challenging. Like most current-generation Lego sets, there are lots of fine, thoughtful details that you’ll notice while you’ll building the set, but which aren’t easily seen once it’s completed — evidence of excellent design quality (and if you’re a parent, a good reason why you should let your kids built the set themselves rather than being tempted to do it for them).
I bought this for my 11 year old grandson and he just loves it. It appears to be a challenge but not too hard and its large so it will take a bit of time to construct it. The characters are really cute. That ugly Jabba the Hut is a riot. I know its pricey but they do last forever. I think anyone who loves Star Wars will just love this addition. I heard that there is some controversy about the structure that this guy lives in but I didn’t see it for a moment. It just looks like a toy house that is typical of a Lego set. If you have the cash, buy it. I don’t think you will be disappointed.
One way to find value for money on eBay is to buy loose lots of bulk Lego. in on the photos on eBay to see if there are any pieces/sets/figures you can recognize, and be prepared to bid $10 a pound (or more) for the lot. (Non-Harry Potter Lego tends to go for around $5 a pound.) Sometimes, you might notice most of a set or several great figures amid a sea of random Legos. The question is, whether your child would want the bulk parts to build things from their imagination or only be interested in the exact sets with instructions. If you were so inclined, you could buy the large lots, remove the parts/mini-figure you really wanted and resell the rest on eBay. That’s rather time-consuming. (Although to be fair, searching eBay and the internet at large for discontinued Harry Potter Lego sets is a time-consuming process, if you want to find value for money.)

Pick a brick is not a cheap way of buying Lego bricks. Consider what Lego charges per brick – $0.07+ per piece, small pieces being $0.07 and larger pieces $0.49 and up. Price per brick varies by size, color and whether a piece is basic or advanced. Cheapest way I’ve found to buy bulk Legos is reputable eBay sellers who specialize in used Lego pieces. Typically they are sold in 1000+ piece lots that contain a variety of pieces in a variety of colors for something like $24.99. That’s less than $0.03 per brick. Do your research, you’ll get a lot more bang for your buck. BTW, if you or your kid are interested in building anything even remotely large, 1000 pieces will barely get you started. A large cup of bricks off the Lego wall for $16 = micro build.

So now that we’re at the stage where we have a budget and we are convinced that this is a good idea that won’t break the bank, it’s time to get organized. For this I recommend using some of the tools on BrickLink. You can part out set into a wanted list by clicking the Part Out link on the set’s page. Here we can choose various options like do we want minifigures listed as fully assembled, do we want to be notified when new items get listed, do we want boxes and instruction-manuals in our list, etc. I also like to make the minimum quantity wanted the same as what is on the list. That way I know how much is needed without having to look up the set every time.
Judith, the discrepancy in sales usually has to do with what each region has in stock, and also what does and doesn’t sell well. The US market is very different from the market in the UK. We get our LEGO sets from the factory in Mexico (mostly), while you guys get them from mainland Europe (Denmark, Hungary, the Czech Republic). What sells well here may not sell well in the UK, and vice versa. There are even sets that only appear in a certain region based on market research and demand. It is normal for companies to have different strategies for different markets, based on extensive market research.
Let the pieces air dry. Lay the pieces out on a towel on their sides or base so water can drain. Keep in a ventilated room to speed up the drying, but keep them away from heat. They may take one or two days to fully dry, depending on humidity.

Well, it’s finally happened. I’m afraid that in the end, I just can’t justify the cost of the Sandcrawler or Ewok Village, but being prepared to see desirable sets retire and not go on the hunt for expensive secondary market stuff is the price I pay for keeping my collecting manageable financially. I’ll look forward to what 2017’s sets bring…

Thanks so much for posting this. We have many Lego fans here at our house. I was so stuck on what sets to get for my girls and many stores are sold out on the sets my girls want and Amazon is charging way too much. Sad. After reading a couple of interesting posts I thought I would toss my own thoughts on what the Lego.com retiring soon moniker means to me.  To me this is definitely going to be the bane of the secondary market in time.  It indicates to everyone interested in Lego that their time is nearly up to purchase particular sets.  It also indicates to resellers that the time to buy is now.  I’m sure there will be the usual procrastinators inside of there yet, but I think overall less.  I think that for every one person who buys one knowing that a set will soon be retired there will be another reseller buying two of them to hopefully sell to the person that missed that time window.  If Lego stays on top of and consistent with their labeling of sets ‘retiring soon’ it will definitely start to take the steam out of the secondary market and make buying and holding a regular occurrence with the majority of sets.  (this is not meant to be a bubble thread)  I apologize in advance if it somehow evolves into that or an ethical debate.  Overall this doesn’t bother me, just one of those things I’ve given a moments thought to.
However, what really bugs me are these sets. That is why it can be challenged as an educational toy because I’ve seen kids just build and not build some more. While I admire the themes and are just as wowed as you are when your child builds a complex set, I can’t help but think that we are not getting as much as we should be getting from LEGO.  I really wish it was more about the plain bricks. Did you happen to see Fat Brain Toys blog post showing nostalgic LEGO ads. I loved it!
2) Make those sets big, and hopefully limited editions. Limited-edition and seasonal sets typically appreciate well—as you likely know, the combination of rarity and desirability is the magic formula for appreciation. So do big ones (think: thousands of pieces) with intricate details. And anything related to movies or franchises (Star Wars, Disney, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, et al.) tend to garner strong returns.

Surprising, almost two years since I originally write this post, Amazon.com still have sellers listing complete Harry Potter Lego sets. Some are still quite expensive, but others look more reasonable once you’ve done your research and seen the much more expensive and complicated options out there. There are little stocking stuffers like the bagged Harry Potter in the Lab figure that are reasonably affordable, and larger sets like some of the Hogwarts sets (beware, there are several that make up the complete castle) and others with many unique and iconic pieces (such as the Quidditch Match set) easily available.

You are wrong about the Star Destroyer.  You mention it has 1367 pieces, but since I have this set, I know it has over 3,000 pieces.  It has 3104 pieces.  Not a bad guess though.  Only about 2,000 pieces off.   ;D
LEGO Taj Mahal 10256 rerelease is sure to illicit many opinions. It is almost exactly the same as the 2008 version. Is it a good value at today’s price? How will it affect the LEGO community of kids, builders, collectors, and investors?
I think this is mainly a problem with series like the Modulars. Relatively few people paid attention to the firs couple of the buildings, but when it became clear that it was going to be a series, people wanted to collect all of them, including the ones that were now retired. There are also new people who are just getting into LEGO due to the popularity of The LEGO Movie who missed out on some great sets. They can do as you mention, and just focus on the newest sets, but if it is a series like the Modulars and they really would like to have a full collection, their only option is to shell out $$$s or to piece together the set themselves.
Our latest featured LEGO set is the City Ambulance 4431 first released in 2011.  The set is made of 199 pieces.  It was designed for ages 5 to 12.   There are three minifigures, two paramedics and a patient.  The Read more »
LEGO released their first entry into the Star Wars Ultimate Collector Series back in 2000 and found they had created a big hit with collectors and adult fans of LEGO. While those initial sets were not nearly as popular as the current UCS collection, it was enough to create a long running series of models with new releases every year. The popularity of the series has grown ever since and exploded in recent years. It has grown to the point that many Star Wars UCS sets represent the best LEGO investments, with even recent entries showing excellent growth after retirement.
I’ve always been in 2 minds about the Sydney opera house, it just seems so expensive compared to Tower bridge and especially Big Ben both of which I have, they both have many more pieces for less money. I managed to get Doctor Who for £35 on amazon, I got Big Bang theory with VIP points, own ewok village and Wall-E. That leaves the sandcrawler which has never been a must buy like ewok village was.
When shopping for the holidays many LEGO fans focus on the newest sets, however it is also a good idea to check out the LEGO Sets Retiring Soon and the LEGO Sales & Deals sections of the Online LEGO Shop. This is especially true towards the end of the year when many sets get put and sale and retired to give space for the sets of the new year. So let’s take a look at what is getting cleared out right now, and you can also use the links in the right-hand side-bar to check regularly before the end of the year. 🙂

Judith, individual sellers could be getting their stock from various places. We do get regular sales on Dimensions sets – usually 50% off, sometimes more. Also, the dollar is pretty strong now compared to the pound, so there is that as well. I also shop from international sellers from time to time. European sellers usually have a much better stock on rare parts and colors. 🙂
The Town Hall is a very sweet set. I really like the colors. I fully furnished and customized mine on the inside, so it is fun from that perspective too. If I remember correctly all of the parts are pretty standard. However if you consider parting it together it is probably better doing it earlier than later as more want to do the same.

Anyone else noticed that 6212 – X-Wing (http://www.brickset.com/detail/?set=6212-1) has disappeared from S@H (UK)? This slipped under my radar and was pointed out to me by @Kempo81. This is a great set IMO, and the length of time on-sale (nearly 4 years) suggest it was a great seller.
I suffer from a chronic case of “painless foot.” It’s an odd condition caused by feet that don’t hurt very often. Without regular pain in the bottom of your feet, it’s unnerving because you’re never sure if your foot is actually still there. The anxiety it causes has resulted in thousands of dollars worth of therapy. I thought there would be no end to my misery.
Large-size, well-constructed set with a lot of useful pieces and some really neat touches (the brick tiling, the bell, the numbered ‘engraving’, a little water tower…). Almost 3x more expensive though now then when I first bought it. :/

Although liftarms (studless beams) have been present in Technic sets since 1989, the change from primarily studded to primarily studless construction around the year 2000 represented a major paradigm shift and has been quite controversial. Initially liftarms were used primary as styling parts, or to create smaller sub-assemblies which attached to a studded chassis. With an increasing number of liftarm designs introduced, a tipping point was reached around the year 2000 with models introduced primarily constructed from liftarms instead of traditional beams.
I have to totally disagree with the reviewer that said this set is way overpriced. Yes, this set is expensive but I think it is totally in line with what Lego prices are today. This is the biggest set I have gotten, its larger size justifies the $50 price increase from the other two Lego Modular Buildings I own, the LEGO Creator Fire Brigade 10197 and LEGO Creator Grand Emporium 10211, which both MSRP at $150. The Town Hall has 2766 pieces and 8 minifigures, the Grand Emporium has 2182 pieces and 7 minifigures and the Fire Brigade has 2231 pieces and 4 minifigues, the Town Hall as almost 25% more pieces than the Brigade and but the price went up less than 25%.

In late 2007, a new motor system was released. It was named Power Functions, and was first used in the set 8275 Motorized Bulldozer. The system consisted of a set of motors, two infrared receivers, a battery box, and an infrared remote control. One receiver would connect to the battery box, and the other would connect to the motors.
The 3rd image takes those same railing fence pieces, and along with some of those (now rare and pricey) Belville “gingerbread” arches… made a Victorian Gazebo with them. This time I didn’t use any of the sticker parts to hide the “notches”. I sent this image to Jamie Berard 2 years ago (after he ordered my LEGO Sets/Parts Collectors Guide on CD)… and he really liked it… but said that his team of designers were NOT allowed to mix in Belville parts with their designs. I do believe that this restriction has since been lifted… but wouldn’t this make a nice addition in a park adjacent to the Victorian row of designer models?? All it needs is some minifigs, trees… and maybe a minifig brass band! 🙂
Cute set. Took a short time to build. Love the colors! 2 cool little mini figures with lots of great diving accessories.Bonus: The boat floats! Definitely one to buy for the kiddies or to add to your collection.
So, if a lot of the elements are still being produced for other sets, that’ll bring down the cost. And similarly, if there aren’t many new products for a given year (new SKUs), it’ll increase the likelihood of an older product sticking around (LEGO has a limited number of SKUs available every year– effectively the barcodes for items).
The Detective’s Office (set number 10246) is the tenth set in the Modular Building line and was released January 1, 2015 at a MSRP of US$159/149€. This set contains 2262 pieces. It contains a detective’s office, a barber shop named “Al’s”, a billiards table “pool” room, and an upstairs apartment. The “Al’s” sign resembles the various brick-built lettering signs from the Pet Shop, Town Hall, and Fire Brigade. The featured “Pool” sign uses a building technique never used before. Inside the pool room features a fan, a pool table, and a dart board. The detective office features clues, a cabinet, and a secret storage space behind a picture. The barber shop features a mirror, scissors, lights, and chairs for customers. The apartment holds an old style toilet and a small kitchen. This Modular varies from previous buildings in that it introduced features of a secretive or “illicit” nature: it has secret compartments that allow cookie smuggling throughout the building. It also is different because it is the first Modular to have two buildings on the same baseplate (Assembly Square being the other). The front of the building features a newspaper stand, a tree, and 2 balconies. It includes 6 minifigures.

Making the list as one of the 7 most expensive Lego sets, this stunning model of the Eiffel Town was released in 2007 and is built to 1:100 scale from the original blueprints. This set includes realistic and enchanting features and details such as a flag at the top of the elevators, four lifts toward the bottom of the tower that transport figurines from the base to the center section, and a small, brick-built French flag. It holds the record for the tallest Lego structure produced into a set and contains over three-thousand pieces!
Of particular note are the twin missile launchers that fire when you turn the launcher and press the release switch. Kids will enjoy lining up the villainous Count Dooku and General Grievous in front …

But, unsurprisingly, it can be tough to find a Lego set that suits you. Some of us want something professional-looking, to complete at night after a difficult day of work. Others of us are still kids at heart, or might be looking for something that we can complete with our kids under our supervision. Whatever you’re looking for in a Lego set, we think we’ve found some of the best ones on the market right now—though make no mistake, you’ll be paying for these extravagant kits. Let’s take a look at fifteen of the best Lego sets for adults.
Holy crap, is this one’s lovely. And although it might look fairly simple from this angle, it’s actually a properly challenging kit. It consists of 4,634 pieces, and it opens up on hinges to reveal a variety of rooms and staircases within. Once it’s built, though, there are hours of fun to be had. It’s like a ghoulish dolls house! Which is just what you were looking for, right?

Pantenkind, I do not think that the UCS would be anywhere near as popular right now if it HADN’T been discontinued. Part of it’s appeal now is that you cant just go and buy it and that the longer you leave it the more expensive it may get.
Nice! Have fun bulding your Palace Cinema! I forgot to mention that since the Town Hall was on backorder when I called in, I ended up placing two separate orders (so the Parisian gets shipped right away). @rocao… I shouldn’t have said “overpriced”…. I should have used the term “more expensive”…. generally (if the buildings were of solid LEGO) the 2x factor would have lead to a price 8 times (2 to the 3rd power) as much. But since these are hollow structures, a price difference of 4 times would be more appropriate.
Outside the realm of creative play, Legos offer adults a more practical benefit through a concept known as Lego Serious Play. LSP was developed in part by Kjeld Kirk Kristiensen, the owner of Lego. It involves a set of activities combining metaphorical modeling, building with Lego, and peer group discussions to explore complex issues. It is designed as an innovative process to enhance ingenuity and business performance on the whole. Research shows that this specific form of hands-on, fully engaged learning produces deeper, more meaningful understanding of the world at large, as well as possible solutions to business problems. The results seem to play into the power of the metaphor.

Bought this for my 7 year old son for Christmas. He put it together the next day. I also bought the Black Champion Racer Model Kit that can be combined with this one. He hasn’t build the combo yet. He was surprised that it would pull back and go pretty far. Ran into the wall a few times and it didn’t fall apart.

He goes to Aquaman in the sea, who fights Black Manta for the trident of Poseidon, but he goes through a similar situation, Aquaman disappears, Batman defeats Manta, and then he and the trident are warped away.
I’ve tried to make it a challenging interesting build with plenty of S.N.O.T. (studs not on top) building on the buildings facade.  There are lots of Lego Technic elements integral to the structure and the 1st floor stairwell is supported by Bionicle elements.
As I own several on this list, I agree with those. But you have only mentioned relativly new sets. The 8070 is about 4 years old. I do agree that it should be on this list. But I miss the 8880, which is, in my opinion, the best technic set. I hope you can find one and try to build it.
Unlike many other toys, Legos have the ability to appeal to nearly all age groups, and a single Lego set can be fun to put together with the whole family. Legos are the combination of a puzzle, construction set, sculpture, and toy, and are equally stimulating for children and adults alike.

LEGO Star Wars celebrates its 15th anniversary this year, and some of my next few Collecting the Galaxy blog posts will be devoted to looking back at the history of the mashup franchise. In the first of these LEGO Star Wars-inspired blogs we look at the period between 1999 and 2005, which takes in the releases of the prequels and the first original trilogy sets, too.
Above all, make sure the listing states that the lot is 99% or 100% genuine Lego Brand.  If they didn’t state that in their description, then take the time to e-mail them to ask.  It is definitely worth it!
We are paying top dollar for sealed LEGO sets. We have a complete list of prices we are paying for sealed Star Wars LEGO sets. We are working on a more comprehensive list of prices that we are paying for other LEGO categories from the last 10 years or so, which we expect to have ready in July. For now, just send us a list at buying@brianstoys.com of the LEGO sets that you have for sale, and we will be happy to issue a price-quote within several days. For a limited time we are offering FREE shipping on your first box shipped to us by UPS, and we offer our account for discounted UPS rates on all of your other cartons shipped.
Lego helpfully make all of their instruction downloadable for free from Lego.com. (This doesn’t stop people on eBay trying to sell the instruction booklets for a  good price, however. Buyer beware!)  If you have a good supply of Lego bricks already, you could start by downloading the plans of a coveted Harry Potter set, and see how many of the pieces you already have. Probably most of them, but the colors might not be exact. But here’s the thing: don’t get caught up with being exact. Kids don’t let a desire for 100% accuracy get in the way of play. One of my daughter’s friends saw the multi-colored Hogwarts we built and exclaimed “A rainbow castle! How cool!” That reminded me kids aren’t as uptight as adults about collecting or having things perfect.
This set includes three black and red dragon soldiers. One is equipped with a chest plate, shield, sword, and full helmet. Another is equipped with an ax and helmet. The last is equipped with a mace and a helmet in a new shape.
This tower contains four levels. The base of the tower contains a rear door for the King to escape if his castle falls. The 2nd floor contains the King’s throne, a bottle and a chalice. Above that is a treasure room, with a chest filled with gold and rubies. The top of the tower has a torch, and space for the archers to stand.
Yeah, I have experienced that as well. Even from LEGO’s own website. It is worth checking how much printed instructions are on BrickLink. Although for exclusives they can be expensive, for most sets they are just a few cents.
The catapult is shaped like a dragon. Push on the head, and the tail flings a brick. This catapult is much easier to operate than those included in the previous Kingdoms set (outpost attack), the brick flies about 3-4 feet without much effort.
Our first entry from Rogue One, Krennic’s shuttle offers a fun build of the Imperial starship belonging to the most hated character in the great Rogue One movie.  Along with a great Krennic minifiguring, you get a K-2S0 droid, two Imperial Death Troopers, Pao, and Bodhi Rook.  The attention to detail on the minifigurines is great, the K-2S0 is a personal favorite.  Our favorite part about this build is that is just looks cool.  The design is a sleek, black pyramid shape which makes it stand out even among some iconic Star Wars startships.  Being able to move the massive wings is a joy.  The ship comes with a couple of spring loaded blasters which are always a plus in our book.  The build for this set isn’t terribly long, but remains fun.  Krennic’s shuttle might not be canon in the Star Wars universe, but this is a great set and worth checking out.
LEGO has released several Imperial Shuttle sets over the years, with the current 75094 Imperial Shuttle Tydirium being the clear best, non-UCS model. This set will be retiring later in 2016 and is potentially one of the best non-exclusive sets to… Continue Reading →

No, I wrote this article just a couple of days ago. I didn’t see the Dragon on the list, so I could have missed it, or items also sometimes appear and then disappear from the list. I have seen that happen many times. That’s why it’s important to regularly check. 😉
