We all know one proven way to invest in LEGO bricks is to look for big sales and great deals on LEGO sets that are still currently available at retail, then flip them several year later for a profit. Another great way to invest in LEGO bricks is to scour eBay and look older and retired sets that are still having positive gains month after month and do the same thing. The trick is finding those older and retired sets without too much trouble. Here is our solution. Below is a list of the Top Performing “Old and Retired” LEGO sets over the past six months. All 50 LEGO sets on the list have been produced in 2008 or earlier. When displaying the sets from the USA eBay listings, there is a 20% range added to the current market value. For all other country feeds, the high price range is twice the current value and the low price range is half of the current value. When testing, this was returning some decent results. Our goal here is to help find these top performing sets that are still consistently increasing in value and showing you current eBay listings within a close price range of it’s current market value. It is our wish that you utilize this data to diversify your Brickfoilio and to help you find some hidden gems that will make you some money in the secondary LEGO market.
Jabba’s Palace depicts the Star Wars scene where Princess Leia attempts to infiltrate Jabba the Hutt’s palace in order to rescue Han Solo, who is imprisoned in carbonite. It’s a well-done, atmospheric set that’s fun to build, with excellent minifigs and good playability.
I haven’t been a collector for long, but I’m a hard-core Star Wars fan since I saw Episode VI in the cinema when I was 5 years old. I didn’t know it then, but a LEGO collection was in my long distant future.
Yeah, I can imagine there’s gonna be a lot of these bigger sets on clearance this year. I actually bought the slave 1 during force Friday because the guy in the Lego shop heavily hinted it was going to be discontinued, and was considering the Temple of Airjitzu for the same reason.
Castle Lego. Need I say more? This is a good set of Lego that I purchased as a gift. The young boy that I purchased this for seems to really enjoy the set. They are standard, high quality construction. This differs from the castle Lego set I had as a child. It appears that the company has made many improvements both in functionality and aesthetics. The castle still opens in the rear to create a long walled structure. This newer castle includes a secret escape, better draw bridge and portcullis. They have taken the original and improved it.
Meet the exciting creatures of the Wild Animals Set. Preschoolers can explore many different themes from what the animals they eat to what they need to survive and prosper in their habitats. The set provides an imaginative way to talk about… more
Design: This set uses a modular design. If you follow the instructions, you get eight distinct modules, four above ground and four below ground. You can arrange these in dozens of different ways to create tiny cave networks and a multi-layered effect. The caves have several different kinds of hidden resources that you can only see when you take the top layer off. The overall effect of the design is a pretty good representation of the Minecraft world.
For example, the 10197 Fire Brigade has been around since 2009, same as 10193 but both are still selling. While Ninjago is currently changing and set 2258 suddenly is no longer for sale in the Lego Store at Disneyland and not available online. Yet that series only came out this year.
More of an architectural marvel than an actual play-thing, the Empire’s second attempt at creating a planet-annihilator makes for a rather functional Lego set. Packaged with a display stand, this one is for the artistically minded collectors out there.
➡ LEGO LEGENDS OF CHIMA SETS ON SALE: LEGO Legends of Chima is another theme that is getting retired with several sets on sale, mostly from the Fire vs. Ice conflict. Sets like the #70147 LEGO Chima Sir Fangar’s Ice Fortress, the #70135 LEGO Chima Cragger’s Fire Striker, and the huge #70145 LEGO Chima Maula’s Ice Mammoth Stomper, and there are many more. You can find them under the Sales & Deals section. BUY HERE

Next we look at rare colors. You may not realize this, but when we are in control of everything we buy we tend to gravitate towards colors we like. Therefore, your collection of spare LEGO parts will likely have more or less the same colors. So when you look through the parts-list for a set you are trying to put together, pay attention to colors you know you don’t have much quantity. My project involving the #10185 LEGO Modular Green Grocer has a tremendous amount of sand-green parts that I didn’t have in my collection.
Nice catch. They have them in stock and no longer with the retiring soon label. Now that is very concerning. If there was one thing reliable, it was that when they said a set was retiring soon, it was. This just changes the game in a negative way. I don’t know the legality of such a thing – but this is getting close to an unfair business practice that may actually be illegal based on the public dissemination of misleading information.
➡ ONLINE LEGO SHOP SALES & DEALS: A number of the older LEGO Dimensions packs are on sale, but this is not particularly a new development. You can buy most LEGO Dimensions packs at about half price both directly from LEGO and at other retailers. What is more interesting is that several newly released larger sets are on sale as well, with 20% off the regular price. This includes the #21127 LEGO Minecraft The Fortress, the #70322 LEGO Nexo Knights Axl’s Tower Carrier, and the #41067 LEGO Disney Princess Belle’s Enchanted Castle. Other notable sets on sale are some of the LEGO Nexo Knights Ultimate Knight packs, and the #40203 LEGO Vampire and Bat Halloween set. Also, the #41068 LEGO Disney Princess Arendelle Castle Celebration, and the #41066 LEGO Disney Princess Anne & Kristoff’s Sleigh Adventure have been on sale for many months now. They are great sets, but it is possible that LEGO made too many of them and they are not selling fast enough. You can find all the discounted sets under the Sales and Deals section of the Online LEGO Shop.
Many of the classic Lego Star Wars sets are now discontinued, with some of the vintage build-your-own kits having appreciated in value to the point where it might be cheaper to construct a real-life Death Star instead.
When shopping for the holidays many LEGO fans focus on the newest sets, however it is also a good idea to check out the LEGO Sets Retiring Soon and the LEGO Sales & Deals sections of the Online LEGO Shop. This is especially true towards the end of the year when many sets get put and sale and retired to give space for the sets of the new year. So let’s take a look at what is getting cleared out right now, and you can also use the links in the right-hand side-bar to check regularly before the end of the year. 🙂
“Brian’s Toys (brianstoys.com), founded in 1994, has primarily been a retailer of Star Wars, G.I. Joe, Transformers, and Marvel toys and collectibles for the last 18 years. We started selling LEGO sets about 4 years ago and are now aggressively purchasing sealed (and opened boxes with new, unused contents) LEGO sets.
