To encourage imagination, fun, and learning, Lego produces dozens of unique Lego sets. There is something for every child: Star Wars fans will find dozens of projects inspired by the starships and characters of the movies.
Assembly Square (set number: 10255) is the twelfth set in the Modular Building line. It was released on 1 January, 2017 at a MSRP of US$279/239€. This set contains the most pieces of any previous Modular set at 4002 pieces as well as the most minifigures: 9 (just barely by being the third LEGO set release to include an infant).
The Town Hall (set # 10224) is the largest set of all of the modular buildings. It is also the only one which includes an elevator which is a lot of fun. The inside is fully decorated with a Mayor’s office, board room, town hall meeting area etc. for a lot of fun Lego role play! This one may have a bit of a “boxy” feel from the outside but the interior is fabulous. I especially love the bride and groom complete with wedding photographer!
The twelfth set of the modular buildings is a particularly large one — 10255 Assembly Square includes 4002 pieces and a three-building plaza containing a bakery, florist, cafe, music store, photography studio, dance studio, dental office and an apartment.
But I will agree that LEGO is in a different league as other collectibles… but I see all the hype of the new series of Minifigs… being cranked out by TLG by the zillions… and wonder… hmmmm will that bubble burst at some point?

Parisian Restaurant (set number 10243) is the ninth set in the Modular Building line and was released in January 2014 at a MSRP of US$159/149€. This set contains 2469 pieces and has a fully stocked, blue and white tiled kitchen with tableware serving two interior tables, two street-side tables (on a patio tiled in a subtle design with the word “CHEZ”), and two upper terrace tables. On the first upper floor (terrace level) is as an apartment with pull-down Murphy bed, kitchenette and fireplace. On the top floor is the artist’s studio that includes a cast iron heater, easel, paintbrush and two works of Mondrian-style Modernist art. Outside the upper floor stairs lead down to the roof terrace for diners lined with hanging lanterns and flowers. This set also includes hard-to-find white croissants and brick elements in olive green, dark blue and dark red. Advanced exterior details include façade with croissant detailing, sidewalk, bench, scooter and even a dumpster and trash can at the back.
Speaking of tough-to-tackle Technic kits, the Mobile Crane Mk II is hardly a cake walk either. This 2,606-piece set actually includes more than one challenge: It’s two models in one, allowing the builder to choose the big crane on the box or a couple of smaller ones. Again, moving pieces are involved as well as batteries. This is the type of set where one small mistake to could have you scratching your head for hours. What fun!
Some of the sets listed below are still available at Lego stores worldwide, while some are out of production. But you may find retired sets listed for outrageous prices on Amazon or eBay, though, those ones are arguable the best LEGO sets. Once Lego stops selling an item, or if produced in limited quantities, third parties grab those products and jack up the price depending on demand. You’ll find Lego sets a purchase limit per customer on certain items.
The minifigures are worth the price of this set alone. The Penguin is of course cool, and he comes with an umbrella and a little detonator for the dynamite, but I think the unique scuba Batman is the best part of the set. He comes in a navy blue batsuit with a harpoon gun and a scuba tank. His face is also two-sided; one side has his normal Batman face while the other shows him with a diving mask and respirator, and it looks really neat under the cowl.
I think you’d find that because of specilist parts that are in the UCS models, that as has been said before, require special molds, it wouldn’t be worth carrying on production. They need to modernise after all. So if something’s new then sacrifice something old for it surely ? 🙂
The Joker Steamroller is a much smaller set, with only 486 pieces, but it’s hard to pass up considering how much it comes with. It has 5 minifigures: Batman, Batgirl, Robin, The Joker and a Joker goon (with their own assorted weapons), and two highly detailed vehicles: The Joker’s Steam Roller and the Batwing. The Steam Roller is 5” tall, 7” long and 6” wide, and comes with a unique ‘chunky roller’, flickable laughing gas bombs and, of course, a big smile. The Batwing is 3” high, 11” long and 7” wide, with four flick-missiles, an opening cockpit and attack-mode sweeping wings. It can be found on Amazon for under $60 .

The Assembly Square ground level features a bakery with counter, cash register, shelves, opening oven, wedding cake and assorted buildable pastries and treats; a florist’s shop with counter, cash register, garden tools, flower arrangements, bouquets and a blue and yellow macaw parrot element; and a café with espresso machine, counter, bench seating and pie elements. The middle level features a music store with a buildable drum set, two guitars and saxophone element; photo studio with a “antique” large format bellows camera atop an adjustable tripod; and a dental office with buildable reclining chair, waiting area, telephone and a sink. The upper level features a dance studio with buildable piano and reflective mirror element; an apartment with buildable foldout sofa bed, detailed kitchen, toilet, micro LEGO® train, modular buildings and Eiffel Tower, and access to a rooftop terrace with buildable barbecue, table and a neglected plant.
The devil’s in the detail with this one. To build a Millennium Falcon this textured and detailed, you have to piece together 5,197 bricks. Other LEGO versions of the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy have been and gone over the years, but this is by far the most visually stunning. The price tag might stun you as well, since it’s a discontinued item…

I know the Admin and I are going to be trying out the I-Brix lighting system. It’s not out yet but scheduled for December to its Kickstarter backers. Not sure how much longer after that before it becomes available retail.
LEGO 10224 Town Hall is the largest modular building, with a whopping 2766 pieces. It had an unusually short lifespan for a modular, as it was released in March 2012 and became unavailable in late 2014, and was officially labelled as a Retired Product by LEGO in early 2015. The size of this unique set and its short life caused its post-retirement value to skyrocket very quickly.
TECHNIC is a LEGO theme primarily based on creating model machines and mechanical toys with specialized beams and connectors. The theme is designed for ages 9 and up, and was first introduced as the Expert Builder series in 1977. In 1984 it was renamed as “TECHNIC”.
I’ve just asked Lego Direct about it, while on the phone to them placing an order, and I spoke to a most apologetic man, who said that he had no idea when sets were retired, but Exclusives were normally 3 years and normal sets 2. I don’t know if you just got lucky with who you spoke to on the phone @winter_zombie, or maybe they were wildly speculating. He said the Death Star had been around for ages and was still going strong which would imply that he hasn’t heard of it going anytime soon. I have to admit I was hoping that the DS and EN would be included in the sale, but no luck…
Lego sets should be played with in combination with other sets.  The older ‘town’ sets embraced this much more than today with interconnecting baseplates and features that crossover.  I wanted to feature a ‘portaloo’ and used one featured in 60073-1 Service truck to encourage set integration and play.  This Base plate / Connectivity is what people are enjoying about the CREATOR Modular Series.

As we have discussed at the beginning of the month, there is a Double LEGO VIP Points promotion going on for the entire month (see: LEGO Promotions & Double VIP Points!). The Double VIP Points period is the best time to pick up large exclusive LEGO sets, as they are usually only available directly from LEGO, and they almost never go on sale. So earning Double VIP Points is the best way to get some savings on these sets. 🙂
