“what happens when a lego product retires _lego 4736”

Did you know that investing in Lego can be one of the best investments you can make? If you look at the picture that I posted in the beginning of December, so approximately 1.5 months ago, I bought those Millennium Falcons for $100 each and now they are selling for $300!! 3x my money in 1.5 months, just goes to show the power of investing in Lego! I may make a YouTube channel on this, let me know if you’d be interested in seeing that!!
Our house is swimming with LEgos. a lot of times when my girls see a new set they really only want the minifigures. SO i buy just the minifigures of bricklink and they are thrilled. I save money and they are happy.
This LEGO set is the “cheaper” version of the UCS Imperial Shuttle (10212), a set with extreme attention to detail, but already discontinued and quite complicated to find (also a bit pricey starting at $760).
After reading a couple of interesting posts I thought I would toss my own thoughts on what the Lego.com retiring soon moniker means to me.  To me this is definitely going to be the bane of the secondary market in time.  It indicates to everyone interested in Lego that their time is nearly up to purchase particular sets.  It also indicates to resellers that the time to buy is now.  I’m sure there will be the usual procrastinators inside of there yet, but I think overall less.  I think that for every one person who buys one knowing that a set will soon be retired there will be another reseller buying two of them to hopefully sell to the person that missed that time window.  If Lego stays on top of and consistent with their labeling of sets ‘retiring soon’ it will definitely start to take the steam out of the secondary market and make buying and holding a regular occurrence with the majority of sets.  (this is not meant to be a bubble thread)  I apologize in advance if it somehow evolves into that or an ethical debate.  Overall this doesn’t bother me, just one of those things I’ve a moments thought to.
Four years later, Lego is still high on her Christmas list. I’m happy to contribute, albeit without spending inordinate amounts of cash. While specific sets are great, there are other ways to please your Lego-maniacs. Here’s how, you, too, can save some pennies on Lego.
There are tricks to filling the cup so that you maximize your purchase. For instance, fill the little rim at the bottom with tiny pieces, then add your large, expensive pieces, then add smaller and smaller pieces. Top off the cup with the itty-bitty pieces that shake down into the crevices.
As one of the most iconic vehicles form the OG Star Wars movies, you have to have the AT-AT walker as part of your collection. Released in 2010, the 815-piece set comes with 8 minifigures like Luke Skywalker, C-3PO, Han Solo in Echo base gear, Rebel Trooper with P-Tower laser cannon, AT-AT pilot, 2 Snowtroopers, General Veers and Imperial Officer.
Let me add one tip to your “Working around problem parts” paragraph that I learned way to late in the process : systematically download the instructions so that, when a hard-to-find-part related problem arises, you can locate in the instructions where the part is used, so you decide if you work around it or not.
Our latest featured LEGO set is the City Ambulance 4431 first released in 2011.  The set is made of 199 pieces.  It was designed for ages 5 to 12.   There are three minifigures, two paramedics and a patient.  The Read more »
Then there’s the method where you build the set from your own spare LEGO elements that you may or may not need to substitute with buying individual parts, based on the size of your current collection. This last method of piecing together retired LEGO sets instead of buying them as a whole, can work out as more economical in situations where the price of the retired set has skyrocketed. Some people also enjoy having a long-term project reconstructing an old LEGO set. Whatever the reason, I’d like to discuss some of the tips and issues I’ve had with this way of collecting. Perhaps my example can save you a headache or two.
The palace build itself is divided into sections, each of which has its own polybagged pieces, making it easier to find the pieces you need (and to limit the mess created, if you’re a parent who cares about such things). The build itself is quite straightforward, mixing regular Lego System elements with a few Technic parts. It is interesting and enjoyable without being challenging. Like most current-generation Lego sets, there are lots of fine, thoughtful details that you’ll notice while you’ll building the set, but which aren’t easily seen once it’s completed — evidence of excellent design quality (and if you’re a parent, a good reason why you should let your kids built the set themselves rather than being tempted to do it for them).
I haven’t tried it myself yet, since my daughter is a little young for Legos, but I’ve heard great things about Pley. It’s a monthly Lego and Duplo rental service, kind of like Netflix for Legos. It could be a great way to try some of the cool sets before you spend lots of money on them, since we all know that just because it’s expensive doesn’t mean it will hold your child’s interest. It could also cut down on clutter, since you get to use lots of new sets without having to store the old ones.
The battle is about to begin! The Dragon soldiers are on the march toward the King’s Castle, and only the White Knight can save the day. Who will win, the King’s soldiers or the Dragon soldiers? You decide with this awesome LEGO Castle set.
@bok2 How exactly can I tell if a set has had more than one “run”? The LEGO Store in my town has had the Big Bang Theory almost continually since it came out, and I’ve seen it on sale several times this past year.
It’s not the most expensive set on the list, but the clue to why you would want one is right there in the title. Actually the second version of the hulking quadruped snow-tank, this walking All-Terrain Armoured Transport battery-powered set is quite rare, but the open-top cockpit and grappling line for Luke’s classic lightsaber take-down make it worth the asking price.
Released in this year, the Super Star Destroyer is a classic Star Wars Ultimate Collector’s Series set that boasts a whopping 3152 pieces! It includes a redesigned IG-88 and Dengar and a new minifigure, Admiral Piett, along with a Darth Vader minifigure. Weighing in at 8 pounds, this set will definitely be a gem in your LEGO Star Wars collection…but it will cost you, as it’s selling for $500 and up!

My 6YO loves Lego. We were buying small sets, but my husband found that he could buy a box of random parts on Ebay for much cheaper. He bought a set that had…I forget, but I think 1000 pieces, for $50 this fall. I’ll check with him, but I think it was that, or maybe 500 pieces. It seemed like a good deal. It’s very random, but my son loved it. That’s my only tip so far. I’ve looked on Craigslist, but with no luck. I’ve never seen them at thrift stores, but I’ll keep my eyes open for them. Thanks.
Ah, got it. FYI – the Market was introduced at the beginning of the year and the Fire Brigade was introduced in the middle of the year. I would be shocked if the Market was still on shelves in 6 months, but I could be wrong. – Nathan Stohlmann Jan 3 ’12 at 4:06
My favorites are The LEGO Adventure Book, volume 1 and volume 2. These full-color books show brick-by-brick how to build the different models. They are a little simpler than the more sophisticated The Unofficial Lego Builder’s Guide that I bought the boys a few years ago.

One thing I was impressed with this set while building is how large and simple the pieces were, and how straight forward construction was. Compared to say, set 9474 Lord of the Rings Battle of Helms Deep, this set was downright easy. Other than having to tie one knot and also decorating several pieces with a sheet of stickers, I’d say that younger children (ages 7-8) would have a pretty easy time putting the rest of this set together. Having put together this set, I’d say this is a very good value.
Any Lego Star Wars set that is still readily available, i.e. not retired, in 2017 could qualify for our list.  That is a pretty broad list and we did consider quite a few, but there are some other ways we narrowed it down.  There are a couple of dozen sets which are little more than a minifigure and a small ship or another accessory.  If one of these blew us away, we would consider it, but given the wealth of options available, that didn’t happen.

At 3,152 pieces, this Super Star Destroyer is an even larger undertaking than the Ultimate Star Destroyer we listed earlier. And given the thinner design of this one, you could argue that it’s even more difficult to build. Again, the limited color palette makes picking the right pieces difficult, and the stark Imperial design makes the job at hand even harder.

Start a High Speed Chase through the streets of Lego City when the burglar escapes in his super fast sports car. He won’t get far with the stolen cash when Chase McCain is on duty. Chase him with the Elite Police vehicle and Elite Police motorcycle. Then take a shortcut to block the road with a tire-shredding spike strip that will send the speeding villain spinning out of control. Includes unique code to unlock special missions and vehicles in the Lego City Undercover video game. Includes 3 minifigures: Chase McCain, a burglar and an Elite Police rider with handcuffs.
Then there’s the cost. Look at the current minifig sets and generally it’s 10/c piece plus minifigs, and a lot of the smaller sets really suffer when they have to include too many to make the scene work. But minifigs are simple, a complex one might have 10 pieces. A bare minimum Technic figure has more than that – about 17 by my count. And those pieces have to be assembled, unlike minifigs where half the parts come bare in the bag.
I have all 5 sets in my collection. I passed on the Market Street originally because I didn’t think that it belonged with the other 2 building…. I was wrong. So instead, I like so many others went back and purchased the set… piece by piece on Bricklink. Unfortunately you can’t do that now since certain rare pieces are going for $10/brick.
A T-junction is a very small piece that allows three pieces of tubing to connect into one junction, essentially splitting (or joining) airflow from two hoses into one. These only allow 1:2 branching, but by combining T-junctions, any number of branches can be achieved (i.e.: one tube can branch into three by using two T-junctions).
From the Joker to Bane, each have their own vehicle that tests the streets and are used in their fights against our favorite caped crusader. And now, collectors and players can have replicas to play out their very own storylines! Each pack contains four villainous character cars and one Batman character car.
Love this camper set! Really cool for an adult collector. Unique pieces make this a must have. Would give 5 star rating if i felt the price / value ratio was slightly better, but still absolutely love this set. The side window on the camper offers a view of the extreme detail inside the camper. I get many compliments from adults on this set – and that is who i think should buy this set. Children may find the camper underwhelming so for the price might be better to avoid if you are buying for a youngster. Overall, i love this set, it fits in beautifully with an outdoor / camping scene, would prefer more pieces or a slightly lower price, would not recommend for children.
lego said “”discontinued”” this means it will not be for sale on the lego web site after that date and if you wanted any of the sets the only way would be from retail shops that had it still in stock or auction sites like ebay.

The following chart shows the lifespans for modern Star Wars UCS sets, beginning with the infamous Millenium Falcon from 2007. We have excluded data from prior to this because LEGO set lifespans were considerably different a decade ago and thus that data should not be considered relevant when evaluating future retirements. Note that this chart and the lists below contain large Star Wars sets that may not have been officially designated as UCS sets — such as 10188 Death Star and 10236 Ewok Village — but rather than debate the semantics of the UCS moniker, we have opted to simply include all large, exclusive Star Wars sets from 2007 onwards.

To sum it up: It’s really hard to save money when you love something that is not cheap. We must face the music. They are really so darn cute.  But if you can share with your kids how to really value them, perhaps shopping for them won’t be so depressing and you will spend less money and energy on them.  Knowing their price and their potential for self-expression will help the kids understand why they should take care of their pieces.  And when you are done with them, store them away for the future grandkids (with instructions too)- thankfully, LEGOs are pretty small.

With such an iconic and ubiquitous series like Star Wars, there are going to be some entities which are almost too obvious as candidates for great Lego sets.  The TIE Fighter ranks up there among the most iconic ships in the Star Wars universe and it is great to see Lego produce a high quality kit from the source material.  The TIE Fighter is a large build at 1685 pieces, the final result has a huge presence due mainly to the massive wings on the ship.  It is quite cool to see Lego give the TIE a large scale build like this, it is a part of their Ultimate Collector Series.  The minor complaint here is that it only comes with one minifigurine, which makes sense given the context, but we still enjoy getting a few with our bigger set purchases.  The build will take a few hours, there is some redundancy with how massive the wings are, but the end result is fantastic so the build is ultimately incredibly rewarding.

But I did it for my kids.  Number 1 Son loves LEGOs.  So many children do but do parents and teachers love LEGO too?  Maybe, but how about buying LEGO?  I am not in love with shopping for LEGOs- it’s work!  For one, those sets make me crazy.  They are so expensive and after they fall apart (because no child will let you glue there are many pieces that are not open-ended enough to inspire more building.
So what do you think? Do you keep track and take advantage of LEGO sets that are getting retired or are on sale? Have you found some great deals? Feel free to share and discuss in the comment section below! 😉
Let’s face it, LEGO makes a lot of sets, and LEGO is expensive. LEGO also retires sets after a period of time. All of this means that we may not be able to afford everything we want when available, and by the time we are ready to buy, the set of our dreams could be out of production. Or you may learn about an old set just now, but it has been retired years ago. So what to do? This is what we will explore today. 🙂
It’s really lucky the Empire had a spare Death Star hanging around. Who would have thought a tiny exhaust port could be so much trouble! Save yourself the heartache of watching the first one blow up by building the Death Star II. If you hurry you could even build the 3,417 piece set before it’s destroyed in the Battle of Endor. This rare set was only around for two years, and the price tag reflects the short run. If you want it in your collection, you’ll spend over $2,000.
Duel on Naboo (75169): Recreate the famous battle scene from The Phantom Menance.  Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, and Darth Maul are all here to do battle on a small power generator from the Naboo fight. Frequently on Sale
I really don’t like what’s happened in recent years, Lego has gone from a plastic building blocks toy to a highly sought after collectors item and designer brand and hobby for the rich, especially when sets retire. I don’t like this investment culture where people who don’t even like Lego buy sets with the sole intention of making huge profits from Lego fans. I’m sure this practice must annoy lego too, maybe that’s why many sets are seeing longer production runs these days to give everybody who wants the set a chance to get one at the proper RRP.
Design: This set uses a modular design. If you follow the instructions, you get eight distinct modules, four above ground and four below ground. You can arrange these in dozens of different ways to create tiny cave networks and a multi-layered effect. The caves have several different kinds of hidden resources that you can only see when you take the top layer off. The overall effect of the design is a pretty good representation of the Minecraft world.
Make sure you are not missing out on sets that have already been made, as the first wave of Rogue One is going to retire with the end of 2017 – including my TIE Striker and Krennic’s shuttle, to be replaced by SOMETHING BIG and SOMETHING EVEN MUCH, MUCH BIGGER 🙂

As a fan, however, it’s very difficult to tell how well a LEGO set sells for the company. Just because the aftermarket cost is high doesn’t necessarily mean that there are a LOT of people still demanding a set for the MSRP.
That’s a really good suggestion about working with problem parts, especially with large sets like the modulars. Thanks for sharing! And yes, the Marina Bay Sends set is a very nice build with interesting techniques, so are many of the other LEGO Architecture 🙂

Remove all the non-LEGO pieces. This is probably the most important thing to do. LEGO buyers are usually only interested in LEGO-brand pieces and are expert at spotting “compatible” bricks. Nearly every LEGO piece that has a stud will have the LEGO logo on it. Pieces without studs will usually have the company name molded into the underside of the piece somewhere. Some small pieces have no markings at all, but the vast majority of authentic pieces will be marked somewhere. Sorting takes time, but it is time that will be rewarded with a higher sale price. LEGO buyers understand that some compatible brands are hard to tell apart from LEGO pieces and will accept that a few may slip through. You should also remove other toys that often find their way into the LEGO box, like action figures, toy cars, marbles, crayons, etc. Broken pieces and pieces with dents and tooth-marks should be removed.
I like the set because it’s modular and can be quickly rebuilt to make your own scenes. I also like the flat 1×1 plates – but there sure are a lot of them. As far as set weights go, this is pretty light. Lots of tiny pieces could pose an issue for younger builders. I built my first set in an hour, and my second in 45 minutes, but I could see build times easily doubling mine depending on age. Kids obviously love it, and for parents it can be frustrating to see your kids want something that doesn’t maximize pieces/dollar/gram ratios, but there’s a good econ lesson in there. Especially if you can work something in about scalpers and aftermarket pricing. A note on that – don’t pay their ludicrous prices. Keep an eye out and you can snag this set fairly easily. SlickDeals always has a thread posted when this set is in stock.
My son found the Lego City Police Station at Goodwill for $39.99 and it retails for over $100, so of course I let him get it. The good thing about this particular Goodwill was that they let us open the box to make sure all the pieces were there. I also for the Ningago (sp?) sets at the same place. I also we have been able to score sets after Christmas on clearance at Wal-Mart.
Our first entry from outside of the movies, Captain Rex’s AT-TE is a fantastic set pulled from the Star Wars Rebels animated television series.  Rex was introduced in The Clone Wars animated movie, but this set has an aging Rex from the Rebels animated series.  This set won’t appeal to everyone, as many might not follow the animated series, but for fans of the show, this AT-TE really hits the mark.  The sheer amount of cool stuff going on here should appease any Lego fan.  The spring-loaded shooters are always awesome, but this behemoth also packs on a couple of cranes, loading doors, and six moveable legs.  Moving this thing around is a lot of fun.  The minifigurines are Rex himself, of course, along with his partners Gregor and Wolffe and two Imperials two give chase; an Inquisitor Fifth Brother (with lightsaber) and Stormtrooper.  This set is a slam dunk for fans of Rebels, but is just plain fun for any Lego fan.
Let’s face it, LEGO makes a lot of sets, and LEGO is expensive. LEGO also retires sets after a period of time. All of this means that we may not be able to afford everything we want when available, and by the time we are ready to buy, the set of our dreams could be out of production. Castle Lego. Need I say more? This is a good set of Lego that I purchased as a gift. The young boy that I purchased this for seems to really enjoy the set. They are standard, high quality construction. This differs from the castle Lego set I had as a child. It appears that the company has made many improvements both in functionality and aesthetics. The castle still opens in the rear to create a long walled structure. This newer castle includes a secret escape, better draw bridge and portcullis. They have taken the original and improved it.
But there’s much more than just Star Wars selling. A look at the best-selling kits on BrickPicker shows trains, play houses, dinosaurs, Harry Potter sets, Back to the Future Deloreans and Pirate sets all featuring.

Also, I just looked at the 10246 press-release, and I’m positively shaking because I can’t get to LDD now, and there’s so much to build! I will retain my full opinion, however, until admin’s article about it is published. 😉 But one question: how is that pool sign attached? It seems to be one hinge, but I can’t guess what the other parts there are. 😕

2005 also saw the release of the first video game based on a themed Star Wars toy line by the LEGO Group — and what became the first in the franchise written by Traveller’s Tales (TT Games). This release featured a game adaptation of all three prequel films based on their LEGO incarnations and hit stores a month before the theatrical release of Episode III. Versions released for Microsoft Xbox, Sony PlayStation 2, Microsoft Windows PC, Nintendo Game Boy Advance, Nintendo GameCube, and Apple Mac were all published by Eidos Interactive and LucasArts, and were a great new way to play with your favorite characters from a galaxy, far, far away.
Lando Calrissian’s floating city of Bespin is one of the smaller classic Star Wars sets, but where else can you find a “working” carbon freezing chamber? With four distinct “play areas” and a star-studded mini-figure collection, you would be hard-pressed to have a bad feeling about this minimal set.
So if you have any LEGO sets to sell you can contact Brian and his team and see what you can work out. I have also added a quick banner-link to the sidebar on the right (the bright-green box) to reach Brian’s LEGO buying page and regularly updated LEGO Buy List. This is a great resource you may want to take advantage of now or in the future when you need to move some of your LEGO collection.
We all know which past sets have gone up in value.  We do enjoy the benefit of hindsight when it comes to the retired older sets.  But what are those sets currently shipping today that might go up in value
Sometimes small and simple can be good things.  This set is very basic, consisting of 282 pieces, many of which are minifigurines and Droids.  The set replicates the scene in Revenge of the Sith where Anakin is transformed into Vader.  The Emperor is included as a minifigurine along with Anakin, Vader, and two Droids.  This is a quick build, but the payoff is fantastic.  Getting to lower Anakin and flip the table over to reveal Vader is an incredibly simple, but fun moment to experience in the Lego world (manually adding his helmet in extreme slow motion is totally optional, but highly recommended).  What this set lacks in size and depth it more than makes up for in fun and cool accessories.
For three years, my son has been asking for this Lego Set. My thought always was that it was way to expensive but I finally broke down this year after watching the price over the years. On Christmas morning, my son opened all of his presents and kept looking at the last box that was under the tree. It wasn’t big enough to be the Death Star that he wanted but I wouldn’t let him open it as “it was for later”.
Dig for gold with a spinning drill and haul it out on a conveyor belt with the 748 piece LEGO City The Mine. This colorful set features a movable crane, working dump truck with cabin, and lock-up safe…
Have pieces but don’t know which kit it is from?  If you think they came from one household then chances are that you have lots of the pieces of that kit.  If so, then just go to this LEGO Building Instructions page, punch in some keywords and see what you can come up with.  Maybe you’re only missing a few pieces and it might be fun to build something this way.
Use this method to minimize damage. This method is more time-consuming than others, unless the LEGO only has minor dust and dirt. Use this for your favorite or most collectible LEGO, to keep them safe from accidental damage.
Finding the right original pieces for this set is so darn difficult (many of them were made only for this set and never reintroduced by another one) so several fans just adapt to modern times and recreate this set in a different color set.

If you are patient and believe a LEGO piece is extremely expensive at current prices, use the notification features of BrickLink. Having notifications for dozens of pieces is annoying because you will get so many emails a day, but having the notifications set for a small handful of very rare pieces is very helpful as you will be notified as soon as a seller lists them.
Not having everything available any time for a reasonable price is what makes collecting fun. Whats a collection if not some of the pieces gain worth over time? Do you really want a world, where theres no way that any set in your collection will grow to a rare item?

Those magazines are available for free directly from LEGO, so they don’t have much value. They sell for less than a dollar on eBay. An other problem with a collection of magazine is that they are very heavy to ship, thus expensive. You would be better off listing them on Craiglist to see if there is anyone locally who is interested, or just donate them to your local library. Kids would appreciate them. 🙂

This set includes realistic and enchanting features and details such as a flag at the top of the elevators, four lifts toward the bottom of the tower that transport figurines from the base to the center section, and a small, brick-built French flag. The Town Hall (set # 10224) is the largest set of all of the modular buildings. It is also the only one which includes an elevator which is a lot of fun. The inside is fully decorated with a Mayor’s office, board room, town hall meeting area etc. for a lot of fun Lego role play! This one may have a bit of a “boxy” feel from the outside but the interior is fabulous. I especially love the bride and groom complete with wedding photographer!

IMO… the entire line is overpriced… and not because of the price-to-parts ratio… but because when TLG switched to the minifig scale back in the late 1970s, they didn’t have this type of set in mind. I grew up with the Town Plan scale (1 door = 3 bricks tall), and the minifig scale (1 door= 5 or 6 bricks tall) caused a fourfold price increase in LEGO sets with 4 walls.

Oh good to know. Emptiness doesn’t bother me that much because that gives me a chance to practice furniture MOCs, however, I don’t know if I can get the others so I’ll definitely gun for the Parisian first and then see I ever really need a corner building.
I thinking of getting the palace cinema, but, I already have the town plan set that came with a cinema in it and it works fine with what I have. I to am hoping that LEGO would drop there prices on sets alittle( or a lot) and that the sale drop would give them enough of a warning to scale back a little. Hang in there Admin, and yes it would be great for you to get away for A while . Be safe and my thoughts are with you.
When I first saw this set, I knew I had to have it. The old school design makes it a must have to go along with the other Creator buildings. Overall, it is a very detailed Lego set that looks nice with the other sets. While I will still probably get the Lego fire station, this was set is very cool and a must have just for looks alone.
The Taj Mahal is the supreme ruler of the most iconic images of India. This magnificent building is ideal for a Lego replica because the four sides of the structure are perfectly identical, creating a mirrored image on each side. Here, the architectural elements of self-replicating geometry and symmetry come into play.
Lego classics are awesome! I am somewhat partial, I loved Legos as a child and these classics remind me of my Lego buckets. Lego gets the large part count by including lots of the smaller parts. One advantage of these classic sets is that they encourage creativity rather than just following instructions to build one specific model.
Only down side is that the motor is kind of weak. Particularly the ankering function only half way operate via motor. Im pretty sure I assembled everything correctly and give the pieces adequate spaces to make it operate smoothly. There’s just too many gears to turn for a small motor. Also it would be a huge blow to my 31 year old self esteem if I couldn’t even assemble a Lego that’s meant for low teens. But seriously, this set was very time consuming to make.
Holy crap, is this one’s lovely. And although it might look fairly simple from this angle, it’s actually a properly challenging kit. It consists of 4,634 pieces, and it opens up on hinges to reveal a variety of rooms and staircases within. Once it’s built, though, there are hours of fun to be had. It’s like a ghoulish dolls house! Which is just what you were looking for, right?
In October 2014, four sets similar to the Mini Modulars were released as Toys “R” Us exclusives. They are 40180 (Bricktober Theater), 40181 (Bricktober Pizza Place), 40182 (Bricktober Fire Station) and 40183 (Bricktober Town Hall). Despite the similarity of names, they are not mini versions of existing modular buildings; they are new designs. They are simpler builds than the original Mini Modulars, based on 6×8 plates, and each one includes two vehicles; the target age is given as 7 and up.
It has all been washed and is ready to play with. Lego 800 Mixed Bricks, Parts. All international will go International Signed For. This depends on the bricks in the bag. An estimate would be; 500 parts are 700-800g and 200 parts are 300-400g.
Be part of the show at LEGO City Airport, featuring a hangar with room for a plane, 2 jets with opening cockpits and an old-fashioned plane with spinning propeller, an airport service car, gasoline barrel with hose that can be rolled out and a tool wagon with tool rack. Includes 6 minifigures.
The twelfth set of the modular buildings is a particularly large one — 10255 Assembly Square includes 4002 pieces and a three-building plaza containing a bakery, florist, cafe, music store, photography studio, dance studio, dental office and an apartment.
Lego sets also offer a way for adults to learn through experience. Studies have shown, using Lego sets as an example, that the faculties of the mind learn better through example. As such, having someone showing you how to create an object using Legos can stimulate the creativity in your own brain.
Now, I generally buy LEGO not as an investment but because I like it. That said, I do like getting a good value for my money. With regards to Modular Buildings, these truly are a good value to buy on the primary market (i.e. normal retail of current sets, not Bricklink, Ebay, or the likes), as an enthusiast and as an investor. The models are beautiful and they impress AFOLs and the general public alike. They are filled with interesting building techniques and cute details. are very satisfying to build. As a set, they merit being valued highly. Now, to add icing on the cake, if you look at the parts that make the whole, you then see the real steal that Modular Building are. With US prices, the building tend to be under 7 cents per piece. Compare that to the price per piece on your favorite sets. We’re on the low end here. I don’t see sets going for less than 6 cents per piece and often times they go for 10 or 11 cents. Your bucket of bricks tends to be at the 7 cent level, but a bucket of bricks doesn’t have as a nice part selection as the modular houses do. So even if you were to buy the sets for new bricks, throwing away all the packaging and instructions and parting the whole thing out for MOCs, I still think it would be a good value.

Containing three fully furnished floors, the Pet Shop (set # 10218) differs from the others in the series in that it is actually two separate buildings side-by-side. On one side you have the pet shop with apartments above and on the other side there are additional apartments. These two modular sections can be kept together or scattered throughout the rest of your modular town. When separated, the two “sides” are each half of the width of a regular modular building so the difference adds variety to an otherwise similar street. This is a great one for any pet lover out there! I especially love the wall painter they have included who is “rehabbing” one of the apartments!

The Lego Fire Brigade would be very fun, educational and durable toy if ours had worked out well and had all its parts! Strangely enough, our set needed to be returned to Amazon because we could not build successfully with the parts missing! My daughter and I build lots of Lego sets! We never had any parts missing once over the years!! Never! This was a fluke! Amazon sent out another set! To our surprise, the same parts were missing!! Now we knew we had a missing part epidemic!! Amazon accepted another return and refunded my money this time! Amazon did a review of the situation and halted selling this set until their review was completed! I couldn’t buy the Fire Brigade again!! I never built this set…….yet!!
I’ve always been a fan of the Town Plan system… not just because I grew up with it, but also I like the very high quality (and very expensive and collectible today) 1:87 vehicles and other accessories that gave it a more realistic look than much of the LEGO of today. I dislike the conical and spherical trees of today… but find the larger use of “greenery canopy” MOC trees very nicely done. And I dislike many of the modern LEGO cars made for the minifigs as looking too “cartoonish”… although I do like the newer LEGO trains very much.

Once I have several shop pages open (for rare parts it should be no more than 1-5), I select to show all items each store has from my wanted list, then compare what they have and their prices. I will do this in part to get the best deal and to fulfill a good portion of my wanted list, and also to get over the seller’s minimum order value (if they have one). This allows me to pay a few cents more on a common element while saving dollars on a truly rare one.
I think the bigger question is why does shop.lego.com remove products from it’s index instead of just saying they are not sold anymore. Links at say, technic.lego.com will link to products on shop.lego.com that are not there anymore. – tooshel Jan 1 ’12 at 18:20
New for 2018, Lego 75200 Ahch-To Island Training. Will it be an invigorating shot for Lego Star Wars sets or just another poor performer. Brook will look back at the patterns from the the Force Awakens Lego sets and to see what the future holds.
There are some other odds and ends, but these are pretty much the largest and most interesting sets that are getting retired and are now on sale. Please note that sale items usually move very quickly, so if you want to grab them before they are gone, I would suggest you do so by the end of the week. It is also a good idea to check the Sales & Deals section of the Online LEGO Shop at least once a month to see if anything new is added.
If you find yourself in that position there are a couple of websites selling retired sets for way cheaper than eBay or Amazon. You can try http://www.chowrentoys.com in the US or Brick-a-brac-uk in the UK.
When searching for bulk Legos for resale, do a search for “Lego pounds” or “Lego lbs” or “Bulk Lego”, etc.  If a lot looks good, check the seller’s feedback.  If it is 100%, mark the lot as an item to be watched (you’ll find the link in the upper right corner of the listing).  Once you have five or six lots, go to your “My Ebay” page.  The lots will be listed there.
This is a pretty crazy looking set.  Taken from Attack of the Clones, this set pieces together Obi-Wan’s Starfighter with an impressive hyperdrive module.  The hyperdrive is a blast to play with. has a dock for the Starfighter, two spring-loaded shooters and a quick release for the Starfighter.  The Startfighter itself isn’t going to blow you away, but it is a sleek little ship that is very well designed and a fun build.  Not as fun as the hyperdrive, but fun nonetheless.  One of our favorite features of this set are the minifigurines.  Of course Obi-Wan is included, but you also get Jango Fett and a young Boba, which is fantastic.  Rounding out the characters is a R4-P17 droid which docks on the Starfighter.  The build isn’t as lengthy as some others here, but it isn’t exactly a quick task either.  The overall fantastic visual appeal makes this set shine, but the smaller details really set it apart.
You can search online for replacement guides for the most expensive sets, and you’re always going to find great tips. For example, most of the internal parts of the Millennium Falcon were some technic yellow parts, that were also created for other much common sets at the time. But now, those sets are scarce, so those yellow pieces (that you’ll never see) are pricey as hell. You can replace them by the same piece, but in another color, and you’ll save literally 150 dollars, in only 16 pieces.

Great article !! I am currently awaiting for a lot of Bricklink orders to to be delivered, covering the building-from-spare-parts of… 2.5 modulars ^^” Those are Cafe Corner, right-half of Market Street and Fire Brigade (I already had a lot of Dark Red bricks and tiles so it was a no-brainer !). Thus, having spent a lot of time and money in the process, I can confirm absolutely everything I just read in this article 😉 From Wanted Lists tips to problems with parts, I went through all of it, so it’s very pleasing and reassuring to know that other people have experienced that.
We all know which past sets have gone up in value.  We do enjoy the benefit of hindsight when it comes to the retired older sets.  But what are those sets currently shipping today that might go up in value
A special should be noted about substituting inner foundational pieces. Rare pieces go right out the window when it comes to these. Many times the designers add these to give fans unique pieces to play with, but if they are never seen then you’ll spend a lot for very little return.
Kids’ school and extracurricular schedules, new babies coming into the family, changes in the work place — they can all put a stress on our time management skills. Here are some tips to help you manage your time and enjoy your life as Mom. Oh. my. word. The day starts, and I think I’ve got […]

Dry the bricks. Optionally, spin the bricks in a salad spinner to remove some of the water. Next, place the wet bricks in a single layer on a towel, right-side up so water drains from the underside. To speed up the drying process, leave a fan on blowing over the bricks.
Now I know I said the project can move forward, however I like to do one more step just so there are no unpleasant surprises. This step involves taking a look at the parts in a set. For this I use the BrickLink. I click Catalog at the BrickLink website and then find the set by either browsing the categories or entering the set number in the search box. Once I find its page, I click on the View Inventory link. Seeing all the parts in the set laid out on one page lets me look for expensive and/or unusual elements. There are no prices immediately listed on this page and I doubt anyone wants to click through and see prices for each part, but I look for three main criteria: rare part design, rare part color, and large quantity.
Have you ever thought about opening a Lego set and selling the figures and bricks separately? Find out if you can profitably part out a Lego with basic tips and how to information. Brook Johnson uses Ahch-To Island Training, set 75200 as an example.
When you have more than 50 sets, storage is a huge issue. Don’t be tempted to cobble together a solution. Start with strong shelving and new boxes to save lots of time and keep your sets looking good. Brook Johnson will show you how he stores his sets, shows you part of his Lego library, and tells you what is “retiring soon.”
Only photographing your pieces in a box or plastic bag – You can include a photo that shows the pieces in a container or shipping box to give an idea of the quantity, but spreading them out so more pieces can be seen will add value.
I’d love Lego Hunger Games. I was thinking of making my own too. Actually my Dino Hunter with the CMF series will be my Katniss, though, I think she needs a nicer looking face. Katniss has resting bitch face but not that bad.
Barefoot College is a social enterprise with a mission to connect poor rural communities to technology and education. By doing so, they empower individuals to contribute to the wellbeing of their communities.
Is there a good site to keep track of the soon to be retired sets? I know that when the new modular comes out each January, one usually retires to be replaced by it. Was that the case this year? Closest I see is maybe the pet shop or that other similar sized one, but wasn’t sure those were in the ‘modular’ bucket.
Lego has a strong foothold in the world of Star Wars. It’s something that helped revive interest in both back in the late 2000s and it is a partnership paying off big time now. But with every new set that comes out, one has to get pushed aside. In this instance, there is an entire line of Lego sets getting pushed back to make room for The Last Jedi and beyond.
My solution to ensure some creative Harry Potter-themed Lego fun without breaking the bank has used all of the above sources. First, I showed my daughter the downloadable plans for all the Harry Potter Lego sets which gives her great ideas, and helps her build approximations of them with our old Legos (we have tons, including a lot from my own childhood — one of Lego’s many virtues is that it’s practically indestructible!). Then, I ordered some special parts and figures from Bricklink (spiral staircases, Gryffindor banners, the Fat-Lady’s portrait hole, chocolate frogs, etc.), scored one small lot of mixed Harry Potter Lego pieces at a reasonable price on eBay, and found the rest of the pieces we needed on the lego.com site (where we got a free gift). I then left it up to my kids’ imaginations to build their own Hogwarts. The colors might be a mixed bag, but all their friends ooh and aah when they come over, and I haven’t heard one word of complaint.

Ride The Scuttler with Batman to rescue hostages taken by The Joker at Commissioner Gordons retirement party, with this exciting set from THE LEGO® BATMAN MOVIE. The highly posable Scuttler features a net shooter, six stud shooters, extendable arms, an opening minifigure cockpit and hidden jetpack for Batman. Batman is also equipped with a Batarang to take on The Joker, Poison Ivy and her vine monster. Includes six minifigures.
Legos’ quality has been consistently good since my grandson’s father (my son) first played with them as a little boy. I am always pleased to give Legos as a gift, and pleased that once again, Amazon came through for me!!
I would also like to add to this that the Modulars are actually really cheap compared to other LEGO sets. The price per piece ratio is much smaller, and also it is amazing how large, detailed and substantial the buildings are! After I put together mine I was thinking that there is no way I could build a MOC of comparable size for the same price by BrickLink-ing the parts.
In 1997, LEGO introduced the Air Tank, which acts like a battery, storing compressed air so that even more powerful pneumatic circuits can be created. This piece is very popular with the enthusiast community, but many feel that it was underutilised by LEGO, as it only appeared in 3 model sets and a parts pack. This tank is now only available at the LEGO Education Store, along with a new manometer part.
This classic three-storey town hall building is the latest addition to the LEGO Modular Buildings series. This highly-detailed model features large entrance-way columns and coat of arms, a tall bell tower with clock and a large skylight giving a view inside the building. On the ground floor, the large hall, tax office and auditorium are perfect for servicing the town’s citizens. Take the working elevator up to the secretary and mayor’s offices on the second floor, furnished eloquently with desks, chairs, paintings and even a frog sculpture. Includes 8 minifigures: mayor, secretary, bride and groom, press woman, janitor and 2 children.

This is more of a surprise, as we see the Tower Bridge has received a box redesign after five years of availability, and the comparatively much younger Sydney Opera House has not received the updated Creator Expert logo. This indicates two potentially big surprises: The Tower Bridge may have some life left, and the Sydney Opera House could possibly be up for retirement in the near future.
We have included all of the sets below for you to see with both exterior and interior photos. If you are looking to begin or add to a Lego modular series, keep in mind that some of these are already retired and others will continue to retire as time goes on. Once retired, sets are very difficult (and expensive) to acquire.

Bought as a Christmas present for my grandson. He absolutely loves LEGO and has uncountable sets. He builds them as soon as he gets them and then keeps them built to play with. LEGO brand is wonderful. Everything I have purchased from this brand is excellent. Grandson is 9 years old and saves up his money and buys a lot of sets for himself. They are great teaching toys are pretty sturdy after being assembled, enough so that they can be played with. other grandchildren play with them also (6-8 year olds), all except the four year old who is not careful enough with them.
For starters, this set consists of 1,123 pieces in the tricky Technic mold. On top of that, there’s an electronic element and lots of moving parts. Getting this baby to roll, twist, and excavate like it’s supposed to is no easy task. It also takes no less than 12 batteries to get the thing moving.

The F40 set is, in many ways, similar to what is included with the Architecture. The entire design of the car is well-executed, with the replica of the F40 being as accurate as a Lego set can be. Despite the relatively small-size—the set measures in at 3″ tall, 10″ long, and 5″ wide when built, weighing in at about 3 pounds or so—Lego has done everything in their power to build a set that accurately and faithfully recreates the F40. The set features a rear spoiler, body-work including the standard Ferrari logo, pop-up headlights, air intakes along the side of the vehicle, and a rear hatch complete with vents that opens to reveal the classic twin-turbocharged, 90 degree V8 engine known around the world for powering Ferrari’s legendary limited-run coupe. The vehicle build even has doors that can be opened, crafted door handles to match the original, a steering wheel, and two internal seats. The front of the model is protected by a clear windshield piece, and both an actionable hood and spinning tires make the car feel all the more real. Even with that small size, the car is built with over 1,100 pieces, an impressive number that is sure to keep multitudes of car lovers busy for hours and hours building.
The Technic minifigures last from 1986 to the year 2000. As far as I’m aware LEGO haven’t released a statement on why the figures were removed. Minifigures are expensive and using them limits Technic sets to a certain scale.
People also like to break up sets to sell the pieces individually on eBay, as they may make more money that way. The mini-figures are the most-valuable, some going for $40 each, even used! You might score a Harry Potter set for a (relative) song without any mini-figures, but your child might not be overjoyed, as the play value seems to depend on having the right beloved characters.
The LEGO® DUPLO® All-In-One Box of Fun set has a whole load of DUPLO bricks for fun building and rebuilding for creative play. At its heart is a buildable wagon base with rounded edges and wheels that really turn. This comprehensive set also includes 2 opening…
Also, when it is a line of products people who got into the game late will want to purchase the earlier models. If you just found out about Fire Brigade and Emporium, you looked into it and found out about Cafe Corner being an earlier set in the line, you’d might really want to get one.
Remember these dates are not the end of production dates but the dates when Lego will no longer sell them on their website. We all know Fire Brigade will most likely be sold out long before then….around Dec 2011 / Jan 2012.

Gears – Gears are flat cylinders with holes in the center; most have teeth around the edges. A large majority of gears can fit snugly onto axles. When used with rubber bands or strings, some gears can form pulleys. Most of the modern gears are one stud wide and have peg holes in them.
The Brick Bank features a bank, secretary’s office, bank manager’s office, laundromat and a detailed façade and sidewalk. The bank features an atrium foyer with wide, arched entrance, triangular-patterned floor tiling, ornate chandelier, oxidized-copper colored skylight, transaction counter with hidden alarm buttons and security glass, and a bank vault with safe deposit boxes and a large round door. The laundromat features a printed window, tiled floor and four laundry machines—one of which contains an “easter egg” play feature for “laundering money”: placing LEGO money-bills or coin elements through this machine will fall into a special deposit box inside the bank’s vault. (The rooftop also has another play feature for a robber to descend the chimney by rope and exit through a special entrance atop the bank vault.) The secretary’s office features a wall clock, desk, typewriter, cabinet with opening drawers, fireplace and an espresso machine. The bank manager’s office features a large desk with banker’s lamp and approval stamp, leather-look chair, printed portrait, statue and a cabinet. It includes 5 minifigures.
I’ll be bricklinking all 6 of the retired modulars: TH, CC, GG, FB, GE, and MS. I don’t mind swapping the high dollar parts out for cheaper ones, as these are more for display and I don’t plan to resell them. I’ve found a couple good resources for subbing the parts: here, here, and here.
3. Bane – This will definitely be a hot minifig when the new movie comes out this Summer. He looks great. Lots of detail, including the back printing. Not my favorite Batman villain, but nice to have.

I see they have the 1x2x2 (flat) windows… a variation of the old 1x2x2 classic window… and the 1x2x3 (flat) windows, which are the same scale as the old 1x2x3 (right or left) classic door. Because I have several thousand classic LEGO windows, and over 500 doors, some of the door handles have broken off, and it can be used just like the 1x6x3 Panorama window… the first image below shows a classic door, a panorama window and a classic door with broken off handle in the tobacco shop. This yellow building with blue mansard roof is reminiscent of what you would find in Paris.
Going back to the #10232 LEGO Creator Palace Cinema, it is somewhere in the middle between the earliest LEGO Modular Buildings, with detailed exteriors, sparse interiors, and taller overall size, and the recent Modulars that are shorter, but are much more detailed on the inside and outside. The Palace Cinema looks great on the outside with colorful (and interchangeable!) posters and other details, but the inside could use a bit of extra decor. And, it is the only LEGO Modular Building with stickers (movie posters, signs, movie screen). It is also one of only three corner buildings, which makes it very useful to turn at the corner, or finish off a street. As you can see, there are some plusses and minuses to this set, but overall it is a well-liked Modular. Below, I have included the official description as well as a video-review, so you can see all the details. And if you want to purchase it, it’s available at the LEGO Creator section of the Online LEGO Shop.
But, unsurprisingly, it can be tough to find a Lego set that suits you. Some of us want something professional-looking, to complete at night after a difficult day of work. Others of us are still kids at heart, or might be looking for something that we can complete with our kids under our supervision. Whatever you’re looking for in a Lego set, we think we’ve found some of the best ones on the market right now—though make no mistake, you’ll be paying for these extravagant kits. Let’s take a look at fifteen of the best Lego sets for adults.
The ShippingPass assortment is continually being optimized. Products are added and removed for lots of reasons, but the main reason is to show items that we’re 100% sure we can deliver within the promised timeline.

Very small Lego kit. Seems pricey for what you get, but I understand that is Legos in general. Bought this as a birthday present and ended up having to purchase something else to go with it. Overall, a good gift or stocking stuffer for a Batman fan.
