If you’ve a pocket full of change, you might want to empty it out, as you could be in for some very good news. That’s according to the money experts at ChangeChecker, who have revealed a fascinating Scarcity Index, detailing the 37 ‘rare’ £2 coins that are set to be worth a mint one day – and many of them are still in circulation.
Legos and Star Wars. Is there a more perfect match to be made in Lego licensing heaven? To many people, no, there isn’t as both long running brands bring to mind very specific sets of nostalgia. It is no surprise that Lego choose Star Wars as the first licensing set in their product line back in 1999 (it debuted along with Winnie the Pooh Duplo that same year). The original release coincided with the release of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. Lego would continue rolling out sets tied to the latest movies while also producing classics from the original trilogy. The results are sets spanning eight theatrical movie releases (soon to be nine with The Last Jedi), and additional television shows. As far as licensed themes go, Star Wars has a long history in the Lego world.
Value: I was happy to pay $34.99 for this set. For Minecraft fans, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. For Minecraft/LEGO fans, it’s simply a must-have. You get 408 pieces, which is about $0.085 per piece. For a licensed set, that’s actually below average. Of course, that’s probably because it relies so heavily on 1×1 tiles and plates. Still, you get eight 6×6 plates, quite a few bricks, and a brick separator. I thought the brick separator was a nice touch for separating all the tiny plates. There are only three exclusive pieces for the Steve and creeper heads. You get an extra Steve head, so if you add a red brick (or whatever color you want), you can make a second adventurer. To piece this set together on BrickLink dot com would cost about $50-$60.
The following chart shows the lifespans for modern Star Wars UCS sets, beginning with the infamous Millenium Falcon from 2007. We have excluded data from prior to this because LEGO set lifespans were considerably different a decade ago and thus that data should not be considered relevant when evaluating future retirements. Note that this chart and the lists below contain large Star Wars sets that may not have been officially designated as UCS sets — such as 10188 Death Star and 10236 Ewok Village — but rather than debate the semantics of the UCS moniker, we have opted to simply include all large, exclusive Star Wars sets from 2007 onwards.
Now I know I said the project can move forward, however I like to do one more step just so there are no unpleasant surprises. This step involves taking a look at the parts in a set. For this I use the BrickLink. I click Catalog at the BrickLink website and then find the set by either browsing the categories or entering the set number in the search box. Once I find its page, I click on the View Inventory link. Seeing all the parts in the set laid out on one page lets me look for expensive and/or unusual elements. There are no prices immediately listed on this page and I doubt anyone wants to click through and see prices for each part, but I look for three main criteria: rare part design, rare part color, and large quantity.
The best performers in both cases are sets that are no longer in production – with the price of the Mirkwood Elf Army set up a stonking 110% in the past 6 months according to Lego investing site BrickPicker.com .
Super cool Discontinued LEGO Atlantis set! Comes with three extra minifigures including a manta ray and shark guardian, and extra explorer and two aquatic animals, a shark and squid. Very very good condition and ready for a new home!
How odd about the opera house. The bridge has been out forever and is still being made. The opera house is much younger. I wanted to buy it but I don’t think I’ll be able to if it retires so soon. Boo.
The thing about LEGO products is that even as a year crosses into the next and new sets, minifigures, etc are introduced in the process, on the other hand that transition also means that it’s time for certain existing products to make their final bow and retire from the stores. read more
Lego collectors and enthusiasts just can’t wait to get their hands on the next most expensive Lego sets and pieces. The one-of-a-kind platinum Avohkii mask of Light from the discontinued Lego Bionicle line is believed to be the most expensive Lego piece ever sold, selling for a whopping $15,000 in 2012, according to Press Democrat. Lego collectors are imaginative, inventive people who are fascinated by building and creating masterpieces from the best Lego sets they can find. So, are you a Lego collector on the hunt for the next best Lego set? Well, we’ve done the research for you and have listed the 7 Most Expensive Lego Sets available today:
Well, it’s finally happened. I’m afraid that in the end, I just can’t justify the cost of the Sandcrawler or Ewok Village, but being prepared to see desirable sets retire and not go on the hunt for expensive secondary market stuff is the price I pay for keeping my collecting manageable financially. I’ll look forward to what 2017’s sets bring…
Design: This set uses a modular design. If you follow the instructions, you get eight distinct modules, four above ground and four below ground. You can arrange these in dozens of different ways to create tiny cave networks and a multi-layered effect. The caves have several different kinds of hidden resources that you can only see when you take the top layer off. The overall effect of the design is a pretty good representation of the Minecraft world.
Another important tip is to just ask for stuff they want.  Make sure you give the G-Parents the product number too.  Try looking up LEGO Creator House and see what happens.  Be kind and give the number.

We have a passion for keeping our products in great condition and will never send out products that are not suitable to give as presents. We have been collecting Lego for many years now and our collection consists of the entire Lego Architecture range, VW Beetle, VW Camper, a couple of Ferrari’s, (Lego ones, not real ones), loads of Minifigures and much, much more.

Great article !! I am currently awaiting for a lot of Bricklink orders to to be delivered, covering the building-from-spare-parts of… 2.5 modulars ^^” Those are Cafe Corner, right-half of Market Street and Fire Brigade (I already had a lot of Dark Red bricks and tiles so it was a no-brainer !). Thus, having spent a lot of time and money in the process, I can confirm absolutely everything I just read in this article 😉 From Wanted Lists tips to problems with parts, I went through all of it, so it’s very pleasing and reassuring to know that other people have experienced that.
LEGO is doing some pretty major summer clearance right now at the Online LEGO Shop, including some very nice medium to large sets that are getting retired. Below I will highlight some of the most noteworthy ones, and you can check out the rest at the Sales & Deals section of the Online LEGO Shop. Please note that once stock is out on retiring soon sets, LEGO won’t be making any more, so make sure you don’t miss out. 🙂

Things slowed down for 2001. In 2000 we got 19 sets, but in 2001 only 10 were released, two of which came from the Technic line, C-3PO (#8007) and Stromtrooper (#8008), and two USC sets, Darth Maul (#10018) and the Rebel Blockade Runner (#10019). Darth Maul, with 1,868 parts, was now the largest LEGO Star Wars set to have been released.
I have most of what I want off this list. A few have remained maybe’s on the list for a long time. Two sets I would possible consider a second copy of would be Wall-E and Pet Shop. But I think I’ll save the money for some of those large sets that came out this year. Still debating on that gorgeous Disney Castle.
Then there are the seller fees on eBay . And the shipping costs – remember, Lego is bulky and could cost quite a bit to ship. And if you’re selling to a collector, they’ll expect it to arrive in good condition, so packing costs go up again.
The Holiday 2017 LEGO catalog has started to reach home mailboxes and there are many set that are listed as “Last Chance!” meaning that they will be probably retiring at the end of the year or shortly after. These are in addition to the LEGO Creator Palace Cinema (10232) which LEGO posted about before on social media a few weeks ago.
➡ LEGO NEXO KNIGHTS SETS ON SALE: Many of the LEGO Nexo Knight sets are on sale as well, including larger ones like the #70352 LEGO Nexo Knights Jestro’s Headquarters, and the #70322 LEGO Nexo Knights Axl’s Tower Carrier, and smaller sets like all the LEGO Nexo Knights Battle Suits. These sets are exceptionally good for interesting parts and minifigures. You can find them under the LEGO Nexo Knights section, or just go to the Sales & Deals section of the Online LEGO Shop.
You’re not going to believe us when we tell you, but Legos, the children’s toys responsible for countless childhood memories and foot injuries, have garnered a larger return on investment than gold in the last 15 years. Yes, Legos. Those little Danish plastic bricks, when purchased wisely, can make you lots of money. Why? How? Because Legos have been for years, and now that the adults who grew up on them have more disposable income to invest, a secondary market has emerged, with pristine sets increasing 12% each year since 2000. It’s the nostalgia economy.

“retired lego 2016 -lego complete set”

While not as big as the 10179 Millennium Falcon, this Episode III one is still a great addition for any collector. With 985 pieces, if you get your hands on one, you’ve got a very rare set since it’s now retired and hard to find!
This castle has a very LARGE footprint of 13×11.5 inches in its standard configuration. The courtyard is about 9.5×6.5 inches, if I recall correctly this is much bigger than the previous Kingdoms castle set. The set is built in six sections; there are three alternate configurations shown on the box.
How odd about the opera house. The bridge has been out forever and is still being made. The opera house is much younger. I wanted to buy it but I don’t think I’ll be able to if it retires so soon. Boo.
The drum tower to the side of the gate house has a catapult on top. Unlike previous catapults, this one is fixed facing forward. It also contains a spring, a soft pole that is deformed when the catapult is pressed down. It is much easier to operate than the standard swivel catapults included in previous sets, especially since you don’t risk breaking the structure when firing.
As a tradition, LEGO will usually announce retiring sets in October. The LEGO Group have done collectors a big favor by revealing some of their upcoming retirements in their Europe website. The list contains a number of interesting sets, such as… Continue Reading →
Don’t get me wrong.  I think LEGO bricks are super cool! I am a sucker for anything translucent and those miniature replicas of real-life objects steal my heart. (we have videocameras, pizzas, goggles, alligators, etc)  I love them just as much as I love those porcelain bathtubs of handcrafted wooden dollhouses. To me, LEGO is its own language – like visual poetry.

OMFGWAT? US$ 6400 for that set on Amazon? What is it made of? Carbonite? Well… apparently I’m not the only one that came up with this idea of building one of the MOST AWESOMEST FREIGHT CARGO SHIPS EVER, that happens to be discontinued. But there’s no way I’m going to pay that.
You are wrong about the Star Destroyer.  You mention it has 1367 pieces, but since I have this set, I know it has over 3,000 pieces.  It has 3104 pieces.  Not a bad guess though.  Only about 2,000 pieces off.   ;D

I’ve always been in 2 minds about the Sydney opera house, it just seems so expensive compared to Tower bridge and especially Big Ben both of which I have, they both have many more pieces for less money. I managed to get Doctor Who for £35 on amazon, I got Big Bang theory with VIP points, own ewok village and Wall-E. That leaves the sandcrawler which has never been a must buy like ewok village was.
It comes with 24 minifigures and several versions of your favorites, which allows you to reenact the most iconic scenes in any one of the numerous backdrops on board the Death Star. And there are many.
If find the challenges of putting together a set fun in itself. I’m currently putting together 10231 Space Shuttle Explorer, 10197 Fire Station, 8480 Technic Space Shuttle and 6395 Victory Raceway (which I desperately wanted, but never owned as a kid). I could easily buy them on eBay or elsewhere, but the challenge of this is far more interesting.
I’ve got to be honest with you: the first time I saw the concept of a U-Wing I hated it. It was probably 5 to 6 months before Rogue One was released, and I felt Lucasfilms was really stretching the “Letter-Wing ship” concept.
My solution to ensure some creative Harry Potter-themed Lego fun without breaking the bank has used all of the above sources. First, I showed my daughter the downloadable plans for all the Harry Potter Lego sets which gives her great ideas, and helps her build approximations of them with our old Legos (we have tons, including a lot from my own childhood — one of Lego’s many virtues is that it’s practically indestructible!). Then, I ordered some special parts and figures from Bricklink (spiral staircases, Gryffindor banners, the Fat-Lady’s portrait hole, chocolate frogs, etc.), scored one small lot of mixed Harry Potter Lego pieces at a reasonable price on eBay, and found the rest of the pieces we needed on the lego.com site (where we got a free gift). I then left it up to my kids’ imaginations to build their own Hogwarts. The colors might be a mixed bag, but all their friends ooh and aah when they come over, and I haven’t heard one word of complaint.

Hey, I had the same thought as you. The set it way too expensive to buy and I want to actually have it assembled, not for collecting. Would you be able to share with me how you were able to get all the pieces and obtain the instructions?
Agitate in soapy water. Place the separated LEGO bricks in a container. Add lukewarm water and a little dish soap or other mild detergent. Agitate the bricks gently, stirring them around with your hand.
Thankfully, I anticipated the Pet Shop’s retirement and bought it this month for my little sister’s Christmas present – after almost six years on her wish-list. I’m surprised by the Ideas sets and the Sandcrawler though.
This set comes with instructions for all three models. The pieces are bagged into several groups to make sorting easier. I find the models all to be great to play with, though I’ve left mine in the treehouse configuration. There are a nice variety of parts and building techniques to keep the builder interested throughout.

Relive the ultimate betrayal in Cloud City with this rare LEGO Star Wars set. Lando is ready to turn our heroes over to the dark side! Don’t worry, when you build it, you can make the story go however you please. This 698 piece set will leave you frozen in disbelief (thankfully not in Carbonite!) at how cool it is. Get your hands on this set before Boba Fett does!
I think the bigger question is why does shop.lego.com remove products from it’s index instead of just saying they are not sold anymore. Links at say, technic.lego.com will link to products on shop.lego.com that are not there anymore. – tooshel Jan 1 ’12 at 18:20
The MINI sets continued in 2004 with a total of seven releases including four larger vehicles (in plastic boxes): the Star Destroyer (#4492), AT-TE (#4495), and three polybags including X-wing Fighter (#6963), Boba Fett’s Slave I (#6964), and TIE Interceptor (#6965). Eight other sets were released in 2003 taking the tally to 15; these included the second release of the Rebel Snowspeeder (#4500), the second release of the Millennium Falcon (#4504), and the third release of the X-wing Fighter (#4502) in minifigure form. This release of the X-wing Fighter came with Yoda’s Hut from Dagobah. 2004 also saw the first release of the Mos Eisley Cantina set (#4501), which featured a small section of the wretched hive of scum and villainy, a Dewback, Landspeeder, five minifigures — Han Solo, Greedo, Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Sandtrooper. There was only one UCS set released in 2004, which was the Y-Wing Attack Starfighter (#10134). 2004 was the first year to feature a set from the Expanded Universe, the TIE Droid Fighter or TIE Drone; this was included as part of the TIE Collection (#10131).

A quick Google search for “Lego Modulars” or “Custom Lego Modulars” will reveal hundreds of these custom modular buildings ranging from museums to schools; however, here are shown a couple of our favorite (we have done our best to give credit to the original designer when possible).
One of those bad guys is Bane, and he may just bust out of his cell if he’s not watched too closely. With the turn of a disk, he’ll power up, glow, and break free! Perfect for encouraging imagination and story building, it’s a great gift for ages 3 – 8.
Pegs – Pegs are small cylindrical pieces that latch into holes in beams. The two most common types of pegs are called connector pegs, which join two beams together. Black or blue connector pegs hold the two beams together stiffly, while grey or tan connector pegs form loose hinges. Pegs have also been seen in System sets.
FB, GE and TH are all retired now but the prices aren’t too crazy (relatively speaking at least). I’m not sure how expensive the pieces would be. I don’t imagine the garage pieces, gold helmets and white bell tower pieces in FB being cheap. The green domes are the only pieces that jump out to me in GE, but I could be missing something. I imagine the garage pieces and orange bricks may be pricy for TH.
The 2nd image (inspired by Louis Sullivan’s Carson Pirie Scott building in Chicago) is one I built because I was intrigued with the curved and straight railing type fence pieces, and how closely they resemble windows, when used correctly. I also used some of those 4×4 corner bricks (in white)… although now we have the wide macaroni bricks to show the same curve. And yes…. I used the unused background parts of LEGO stickers… cut them into little rectangles… and stuck them onto the building to hide all those “missing notches” that macaroni and other curved bricks have. I like the sculptural effect that this curved building has, and the hiding of the notches improves the appearance.
I built Market Street via Bricklink so I’m well aware of the difficulties. On a positive note, having completed that project has given me an appreciation for those people who create their own creations from bricks sourced through Bricklink or Pick a Brick.
This was a terrific decision. Since then friends and family have seen the buckets of legos and have opted for the free play lego sets. It really is worth it. The sets are magnificent, but if your child is like mine and won’t dismantle a made lego set this is a great way to put the creative play back in the mix.
Lego classics are awesome! I am somewhat partial, I loved Legos as a child and these classics remind me of my Lego buckets. Lego gets the large part count by including lots of the smaller parts. One advantage of these classic sets is that they encourage creativity rather than just following instructions to build one specific model.
An absolute classic, the Grand Carousel consists of 3,263 pieces, and thanks to an in-built motor it can actually rotate. And it plays music while it does. It’s intended for aged 16 and up, and it would look great in any LEGO collection. Fun fact: It comes with an ultra rare extra large baseplate. What more motivation do you need?
So what does this mean? If you see a LEGO set you like, buy it. Don’t wait and pay aftermarket prices! (although I love it when you do, some of those modulars for sale on BL are mine. Think of it as enabling my habit)
Lego 10197 Modular Fire Brigade Discontinued in December 2013 and is becoming hard to find. Build an authentic vintage fire station! Ding ding ding! There’s a fire in town! The fire brigade drives to the scene from this detailed and realistic 1930’s fire station. Designed to fit with other modular…
This forum is not good for my health. Whereas I had merely toyed with the idea, but not seriously…..I am now! I’ve spent vast fortune securing the deleted SW UCS, I don’t want to go there again!! But will I regret it?? Arrghhhh.
The only surprise here is that 2011’s Volkswagen T1 Camper Van was given the redesigned box treatment. It has been widely expected that this set would retire soon, and it still may, but an updated box does potentially indicate that there is still some time left on that set before it retires.
I’ve resisted the modulars, until a week ago when I caved in and ordered the Fire Brigade. I’ve no doubt that I’ll also buy the Emporium and the Pet Shop now too. As for whether I go back and collect the rest, I’m not sure yet, I think I’ll just keep an eye out and if a bargain comes up I’ll probably get it.

A T-junction is a very small piece that allows three pieces of tubing to connect into one junction, essentially splitting (or joining) airflow from two hoses into one. These only allow 1:2 branching, but by combining T-junctions, any number of branches can be achieved (i.e.: one tube can branch into three by using two T-junctions).

Flex-hoses aren’t actually considered pneumatic pieces; they were designed as part of the Technic system for a different purpose, but Lego fans have discovered that pneumatic tubing actually fits over flex hoses pretty well, so many people use them as tubing extenders whenever they are needed. Flex hoses are more rigid than tubing.

Surprisingly, the sleek, AT-AT-toppling Snowspeeder is rarer than its space-based brethren the X-Wing Fighter. As one of the early entries in the sought-after Ultimate Collector Series, the Snowspeeder unfortunately doesn’t include a minifigure for Luke Skywalker’s short-lived co-pilot Dak Ralter. Poor Dak.
Sometimes even LEGO fans would like to sell their LEGO collection, or part of their collection. This may be due to not having enough room, moving, financial challenges, loosing interest in the hobby (hope not!) or just wanting to free up room for new LEGO sets. 😉
“Retiring Soon” means nothing, some sets get the label and are sold out a week later, a set like Medieval Market gets the label and it was still available for like 6+ months. “Retired” is really the tag to look for but that doesnt show up until a set is almost completely sold everywhere so by time you see the label its worthless. Im sure LEGO does mess with buyers/investors to encourage them to buy a set they were on the fence about or were waiting for a sweet sale but instead rush out and buy it at full MSRP. Its all a big game with constantly changing rules, Investors either give up and get out, get burnt and loose money or you keep up with the changing market and actually make a profit.

It’s not the most expensive set on the list, but the clue to why you would want one is right there in the title. Actually the second version of the hulking quadruped snow-tank, this walking All-Terrain Armoured Transport battery-powered set is quite rare, but the open-top cockpit and grappling line for Luke’s classic lightsaber take-down make it worth the asking price.

So, if a lot of the elements are still being produced for other sets, that’ll bring down the cost. And similarly, if there aren’t many new products for a given year (new SKUs), it’ll increase the likelihood of an older product sticking around (LEGO has a limited number of SKUs available every year– effectively the barcodes for items).

Judith, individual sellers could be getting their stock from various places. We do get regular sales on Dimensions sets – usually 50% off, sometimes more. Also, the dollar is pretty strong now compared to the pound, so there is that as well. I also shop from international sellers from time to time. European sellers usually have a much better stock on rare parts and colors. 🙂

2002 saw the release of Episode II and with it the first eight sets from the film, including a much bigger Slave I featuring the new Jango Fett color scheme (#7153), the Republic Gunship (#7163), and for the first time, Yoda as a minifigure in “Jedi Duel with Count Dooku” (#7103), and also as a much larger UCS set of Yoda (#7194) standing 14” high. A total of 25 sets were released in 2002 and these also included the first MINI vehicle delivered in a polybag rather than a box, a TIE Fighter (#3219). Technic versions of Darth Vader (#8010), Jango Fett (#8011), Super Battle Droid (#8012), and R2-D2/C-3PO Droid Collectors Set (#65081) were also released along with UCS versions of the Naboo Starfighter which featured chrome elements (#10026) and the Imperial Star Destroyer (#10030), which became the largest LEGO Star Wars set available, with 3,096 pieces. The Republic Gunship, released in 2002, is the only set to feature blue Super Battle Droids and commands a high after sale price — as do most retired LEGO Star Wars sets. The 1999 version of the X-wing Fighter was re-released in 2002 as set #7142; also the first LEGO Star Wars pens were introduced (not included in set counts).

We all know one proven way to invest in LEGO bricks is to look for big sales and great deals on LEGO sets that are still currently available at retail, then flip them several year later for a profit. Another great way to invest in LEGO bricks is to scour eBay and look for older and retired sets that are still having positive gains month after month and do the same thing. The trick is finding those older retired sets without too much trouble. Here is our solution. Below is a list of the Top Performing “Old and Retired” LEGO sets over the past six months. All 50 LEGO sets on the list have been produced in 2008 or earlier. When displaying the sets from the USA eBay listings, there is a 20% range added to the current market value. For all other country feeds, the high price range is twice the current value and the low price range is half of the current value. When testing, this was returning some decent results. Our goal here is to help find these top performing sets that are still consistently increasing in value and showing you current eBay listings within a close price range of it’s current market value. It is our wish that you utilize this data to diversify your Brickfoilio and to help you find some hidden gems that will make you some money in the secondary LEGO market.

“recently retired lego star wars sets _lego 9461”

As thehornedrat says, I may have to succumb to lepin for the opera house set along with the Taj Mahal and the very early modulars which I missed. I refuse to pay the prices being asked on eBay for these sets because A, I can’t afford it and B, I think these investors who stockpile sets to try and mug people off by making huge profits when they retire are worse than lepin.
Four years later, Lego is still high on her Christmas list. I’m happy to contribute, albeit without spending inordinate amounts of cash. While specific sets are great, there are other ways to please your Lego-maniacs. Here’s how, you, too, can save some pennies on Lego.
Mmmmm it just seems ludicrous to me that in order to save money, I have to purchase the earlier wave Lego Dimension sets from a seller in North America. Even with international postage costs, these sets (boxed) work out at an approx saving of 50% compared to the UK price. This seller must have purchased the sets when they were drastically reduced in price, and is obviously making a profit.
However, if you want just (1) set, this would be a nice one to get. Compared to the original Jabba’s palace, this set is much more sturdy. I would not let the kids play with the older one because it would probably not last long and fall apart. This set however survives a 3yr old very well.
Wash the bricks first. This method will reverse the discoloration that occurs due to sun exposure, but it does not remove grime. Follow one of the methods above first to get your bricks clean before you attempt this.
This set contains 996 pieces, spread between 10 numbered bags and one unnumbered bag of base plates. The instructions are printed on three booklets, bound to a sheet of cardboard. No paperweights required. Also included is a sheet of stickers with brick patterns, as well as a sheet of malleable plastic with three flags.
Despite my earlier hesitations, the tinkling sound of Lego pieces being sorted and scooped is a happy sound to me, a remembrance of hours and hours of intense, creative play by my sons. And now my youngest daughter.
One way to find value for money on eBay is to buy loose lots of bulk Lego. Zoom in on the photos on eBay to see if there are any pieces/sets/figures you can recognize, and be prepared to bid $10 a pound (or more) for the lot. (Non-Harry Potter Lego tends to go for around $5 a pound.) Sometimes, you might notice most of a set or several great figures amid a sea of random Legos. The question is, whether your child would want the bulk parts to build things from their imagination or only be interested in the exact sets with instructions. If you were so inclined, you could buy the large lots, remove the parts/mini-figure you really wanted and resell the rest on eBay. That’s rather time-consuming. (Although to be fair, searching eBay and the internet at large for discontinued Harry Potter Lego sets is a time-consuming process, if you want to find value for money.)

To me “Retiring Soon” label was the latest promotional tool from S@H to entice people to buy older sets WITHOUT loss of profit (via discounts).  Since it is just a promo tool, it does not need to be 100% reliable.
Another easy way to reduce the price: Just order your pieces by Status, and scroll down until you find the pieces marked with a blueish cross. Those are the extra pieces that come in every set. Delete them immediately. In my case, those were US$ 20 less.
The Taj Mahal is the supreme ruler of the most iconic images of India. This magnificent building is ideal for a Lego replica because the four sides of the structure are perfectly identical, creating a mirrored image on each side. Here, the architectural elements of self-replicating geometry symmetry come into play.
Listen, most Legos are going to go down in value the minute you buy them. Just try selling some generic Legos on Craigslist and see what the response is. The point isn’t to simply stock up on whatever Legos you can find. There are things to look for:
The minifigure as we know it today, standing 4 cm. or four bricks high, has always been an iconic cornerstone of LEGO sets, designed by LEGO model builder Jens Nysgarrd Knudsen and first released in 1978. According to LEGO.com, the yellow color was chosen to display equalization in ethnic society. In 2003, minifigures with natural skin tones were released as part of the LEGO NMA Basketball line to represent specific people such as Shaquille O’Neal. These natural toned minifigures didn’t make it to LEGO Star Wars until 2005, just in time for the release of sets for Episode III, including General Grievous Chase (#7255), which included Obi-Wan Kenobi, Jedi Starfighter, and Vulture Droid (#7256), which included Anakin Skywalker. Anakin was also released as part of the Ultimate Lightsaber Duel (#7257). 2005 also saw the release of the first original trilogy sets with skin tone colored minifigures that included Imperial Inspection (#7264) with Darth Vader, Emperor Palpatine, and two Imperial Officers. Two UCS sets were released in 2005, taking the tally of sets to 22 (not including promotional sets). These were the Sandcrawler (#10144) and the largest set released up until 2005, Death Star II with 3,441 pieces. 2005 also saw several promotional sets including a figure and display stand given to guests invited by LEGO to the 2005 International Toy Fair in New York in February. The figures featured were either Luminara Unduli or Anakin Skywalker, both of which came with light-up lightsabers. At the International Toy Fair in New York, VIPs were also given a special boxed edition of Darth Vader’s Transformation (#7251). At the International Toy Fair in Nuremberg, Germany, guests were given a light-up Darth Vader polybag figure.

Bigger, maybe but a different question. I would imagine why they remove them entirely is because by leaving the items in and just marking them “sold out” or whatever would be confusing to non-collectors or would solicit a ton of “When will you get more X?” questions. – Nathan Stohlmann Jan 2 ’12 at 15:19

This detailed LEGO® brick recreation of the ship featured in Star Wars: Attack of the Clones includes an opening minifigure cockpit, space for the R4-P17 Astromech droid top section and 2 stud shooters, while the large hyperdrive features 2 spring-loaded shooters, big engines, and a grab handle for enhanced play and quick release of the docked model. This impressive set also includes 3 minifigures and an Astromech droid figure.
Sometimes small and simple can be good things.  This set is very basic, consisting of 282 pieces, many of which are minifigurines and Droids.  The set replicates the scene in Revenge of the Sith where Anakin is transformed into Vader.  The Emperor is included as a minifigurine along with Anakin, Vader, and two Droids.  This is a quick build, but the payoff is fantastic.  Getting to lower Anakin and flip the table over to reveal Vader is an incredibly simple, but fun moment to experience in the Lego world (manually adding his helmet in extreme slow motion is totally optional, but highly recommended).  What this set lacks in size and depth it more than makes up for in fun and cool accessories.

Next we look at rare colors. You may not realize this, but when we are in control of everything we buy we tend to gravitate towards colors we like. Therefore, your collection of spare LEGO parts will likely have more or less the same colors. So when you look through the parts-list for a set you are trying to put together, pay attention to colors you know you don’t have much quantity. My project involving the #10185 LEGO Modular Green Grocer has a tremendous amount of sand-green parts that I didn’t have in my collection.
Also, the Architecture series is a great source of models to build from spare parts. The best example is Marina Bay Sands : I managed to build it for approx. $80, whereas it goes for $800 in the market. And it was delighful 😀
Our first entry from Rogue One, Krennic’s shuttle offers a fun build of the Imperial starship belonging to the most hated character in the great Rogue One movie.  Along with a great Krennic minifiguring, you get a K-2S0 droid, two Imperial Death Troopers, Pao, and Bodhi Rook.  The attention to detail on the minifigurines is great, the K-2S0 is a personal favorite.  Our favorite part about this build is that is just looks cool.  The design is a sleek, black pyramid shape which makes it stand out even among some iconic Star Wars startships.  Being able to move the massive wings is a joy.  The ship comes with a couple of spring loaded blasters which are always a plus in our book.  The build for this set isn’t terribly long, but remains fun.  Krennic’s shuttle might not be canon in the Star Wars universe, but this is a great set and worth checking out.
The famous Imperial Star Destroyer is by far an incredible vehicle and the Lego version is no different! It features 1367 pieces and a ton of minifigures like Darth Vader, Grand Moff Tarkin, Imperial Officer, two Stormtroopers, two Emperor’s Royal Guards, Imperial Astromech Droid, and Mouse Droid.

Dang, I was hoping to save money to get something like the Sandcrawler or the Ewok Village. I am also shocked to see Dr. Who and The Big Bang Theory up on that list to. I wonder if Lego is having supply issues again, or if demand is so high it brought about a fast end of those projects.
Now, we’re not advising you to cash in your ETFs and invest in 1,000-piece Millennium Falcon sets. But since we here at Wealthsimple are all about giving you all the information you need to make great investments (and also informing you about entertaining ways people try to make money), we sought the advice of Jeff Maciorowski, who runs the Lego-investing business Brick Picker. Here’s our novice’s guide for how to get in on the brick market, what to look for, and what the Holy Grail of all Lego sets is.

Making the list as one of the 7 most expensive Lego sets, this stunning model of the Eiffel Town was released in 2007 and is built to 1:100 scale from the original blueprints. This set includes realistic and enchanting features and details such as a flag at the top of the elevators, four lifts toward the bottom of the tower that transport figurines from the base to the center section, and a small, brick-built French flag. It holds the record for the tallest Lego structure produced into a set and contains over three-thousand pieces!
Lego has a strong foothold in the world of Star Wars. It’s something that helped revive interest in both back in the late 2000s and it is a partnership paying off big time now. But with every new set that comes out, one has to get pushed aside. In this instance, there is an entire line of Lego sets getting pushed back to make room for The Last Jedi and beyond.
As you can see, there are lots of sets on sale right now to clear out older stock. What do you think? Are you finding some interesting sets on sale that you would like to build? Or are you mostly looking at sets for interesting parts? What are you planning to get? Feel free to share and discuss in the comment section below! 😉

There were not enough of the thin blocks. The building plate was large enough, but it can only be used as a base plate. if you ever needed a large plate to complete the roof of something, you aren’t going to find it in this kit.
Like yourself, it is easy to look back and wish for the older sets (in my case the Fire Brigade and the Grand Emporium). But I look at it this way: The Pet Shop was my first modular and so my collection will start from there and I will buy everyone from there on “up”.
^ I agree, they do risk straining the bubble a bit with the minifigs generating a certain collecting culture, but look at it this way, if they sell 3 modulars per customer, I bet they’ll not be complaining 🙂

Then there are the seller fees on eBay . And the shipping costs – remember, Lego is bulky and could cost quite a bit to ship. And if you’re selling to a collector, they’ll expect it to arrive in good condition, so packing costs go up again.
I suspect this ultimately still boils down to what I said in my first post. If it’s harder to produce but people are not willing to pay more money for it, what’s the point? I find myself as well being not terribly interested in the Technic figures, while I love Technic. Yet I do like minifigs. But it feels like the figures are just not needed in the models.

Galaxy Squad, Alien Conquest and Ninjago are pretty common, so in used condition you might be able to get half of the original price. Right now Galaxy Squad is 50% off in most places, and those are brand new sets. Power Miners can get better money as it has some fans and it has been retired several years ago. Indiana Jones really depends on the set and the condition. Same with the MBA set. You can look at prices on eBay and BrickLink for comparable condition sets as yours and see how much they go for.
About the previous post I made.  You did mention that the Star Destroyer you typed about was the 6211 set, but that’s the small set, the picture you have is of the big star destroyer, which is an Ultimate Collector Series set.  That’s the over 3,000 piece set.  So I guess right description, just wrong picture.   =D
You could’ve felt the call while you were a kid, or during your mid-thirties. It doesn’t matter when you started your LEGO Star Wars collection, there’s are a number of sets that you definitely love collecting, because they’re emblematic in a sense, because they’re just beautiful to build and display, or simply because everybody has one and now you have to (sometimes it works for me).
LEGO has released several Imperial Shuttle sets over the years, with the current 75094 Imperial Shuttle Tydirium being the clear best, non-UCS model. This set will be retiring later in 2016 and is potentially one of the best non-exclusive sets to… Continue Reading →
My 8 year old son and I went to the Salvation Army two days ago. It was right around the corner from my doctors, so on a whim and looking for used skylanders figures we went. We found 6 gallon size ziplock baggies full to busting of legos! The best part was they were $1.99 each! I left my name and number and they said if they get any more in they’d give me a call. They also said to give other thrift stores a call, everyone knows what legos are and will look to see if they have any. (Saves a lot on gas)

Luke’s Landspeeder (75173):  There’s a lot to love here with the classic landspeeder build which also includes three classic minifigurines: Luke, C3PO, and Obi-Wan (or Ben, if you prefer) Kenobi. The Tusken Raider also looks fantastic.
What a fun and creative building set! This was purchased as a gift for a four year old boy’s birthday and he absolutely loved it. He has lots of legos already, but this set was a great addition to his collection. This set definitely inspires the mind as it can be built at least three different ways. It has lots of fun little extras like the ladder that lifts up and the trap door that can be sealed. It just has lots of fun little elements. It comes with complete instructions for building it all 3 ways and provides hours of brain-stimulating fun for children in a wide range of ages. I would recommend this building set for anyone who likes legos whether they have lots of sets already or are just starting out. A young child will need help building the sets so it makes a great one on one activity to do with you child. I am pleased with the quality, the price, and the overall value of this lego set.
Megan Rothrock: Her next LEGO Adventure book is coming out this year!!!! Do you have questions for her? Like… how did you get your job designing for LEGO? Can you hire my son as an intern- I will even pay you!?
One these that I’m sad to see go is the LEGO Master Builder Academy series. I own all four levels and highly recommend them (you can read my review on the sets here: New LEGO Master Builder Academy Available!). They are a great way to systematically learn advanced building techniques with LEGO, and the parts-selection is also excellent. Kids, teens and adults can all find value in this well thought out series. It never became available outside the USA even though there is an international demand. If you support your hobby by reselling LEGO sets, I would suggest that you seriously consider adding these to your inventory. Even buying them at full price will leave you plenty of room for profit when the sets get fully retired as LEGO fans and collectors will still be looking for them. You can find the sets at the Retiring Soon section of the Online LEGO Shop.
If you found an enormous deal but spent 30+ hours to find it then you should be getting them for free. Once you have taught yourself what is the actual MSRP, you should be ready to act when there is a good sale. Note: Toys ‘R Us prices may be higher than MSRP so do the math when you shop Buy-One-Get-One-50% Off.
Thanks to Sharon’s advice, years ago I bought the girls a large pink brick box on Christmas sale. The brick box contains starter pieces for building that can be combined in a number of ways. It doesn’t lock the child into building one particular thing, like the Shelob Attacks set that one of them had requested.
People also like to break up sets to sell the pieces individually on eBay, as they may make more money that way. The mini-figures are the most-valuable, some going for $40 each, even used! You might score a Harry Potter set for a (relative) song without any mini-figures, but your child might not be overjoyed, as the play value seems to depend on having the right beloved characters.
Those magazines are available for free directly from LEGO, so they don’t have much value. They sell for less than a dollar on eBay. An other problem with a collection of magazine is that they are very heavy to ship, thus expensive. You would be better off listing them on Craiglist to see if there is anyone locally who is interested, or just donate them to your local library. Kids would appreciate them. 🙂

The thing about LEGO products is that even as a year crosses into the next and new sets, minifigures, etc are introduced in the process, on the other hand that transition also means that it’s time for certain existing products to make their final bow and retire from the stores. read more

It may seem bad now that 6/9 modulars are gone, but if you can get one of the retired ones (some stores may have some on hand), you could potentially have half of all the modulars since the Detective’s Office will make it an even 10. If you’re not irritated about missing the first few, I wouldn’t worry about missing a good chunk of them. Personally, I have nothing before FB and I would only pay original list price for any of the ones before it.
The Tumbler is a challenging build, with 1,869 mostly black pieces. It’s an intricate design, modelled after the Tumbler seen in The Dark Knight trilogy, and comes in at over 5” high, 15” long and 9” wide. It has an armored exterior, adjustable top wings, a detailed interior, and huge rubber-tread racing tires, as well as exclusive Batman and Joker minifigures.
Juniors: Juniors sets are for kids ages 4 to 8. These sets feature traditional LEGO bricks, but the sets are smaller and easier to build. These sets can introduce children to building by following instructions.

Nice, a crawlspace for those of you making your “John Wayne Gacy setup”. Ok, a bit tasteless, I know. But seriously I love these buildings! I collect sets that will display well as I do not interact with them other than to admire details. I just finished the fire brigade and soon will be starting my grand emporium thats sitting in my closet. I missed the first three but I think I will definitely go after the green grocer for sure. I really wish I would have come out of my dark maybe a year or two earlier as I missed alot of the Star wars ucs sets, the first of these and the taj majal and carousel. Oh well, heres to the future sets that I will not miss again.

For years, LEGOs have stood as some of the most popular construction toys around, allowing children and adults alike to dive into their imaginations to produce beautiful and functional LEGO models. Furthermore,…
Market Street has some interesting build techniques and I like the color scheme, but on the whole, it isn’t up to snuff with the rest of the line. The roof looks unfinished, and the bizarre looking single story side market just doesn’t fit in with the row of modulars at all. The final nail in the coffin is that it had an even shorter production run than it’s counterparts, so it’s aftermarket price is further out of proportion.
In recent years, System sets have begun to adopt previously TECHNIC-exclusive parts, particularly in Exclusives and Star Wars sets. Many modern sets, including TECHNIC sets themselves, blur the distinction between the two systems to a considerable degree.

Fair enough, and before the internet I think that would be a valid point. I personally cannot see how paying more makes collecting more fun? Its not like you work harder (other than for your money) to buy it. Instead of buying from one web site you just buy from another.

I think they are cool, but they are a lot cooler when assembled into a city block. Just don’t want to have 1 or 2 and have it look stupid. Like the corner shops, looks like there are only 2 and they are both retired, so i hope LEGO offers some more corner shops in the future.
I also missed the Cafe Corner… though looking back it’s because I didn’t have the money. I’d say these are more for the AFOL who commit to City designs. So the only advantage to building minifig scale streets is if you want to make a huge Lego town. Lets face it… the direction it’s heading is far more expensive then we imagine. I like many different themes and would rather get a lot of different stuff than build a town. I feel bad about missing out on a cool series of sets, but every year I see plenty of other cool sets to keep my wallet empty. Unless you really like modern city don’t bother… the Ebay re-seller world makes collecting Lego horrible.
Ride The Scuttler with Batman to rescue hostages taken by The Joker at Commissioner Gordons retirement party, with this exciting set from THE LEGO® BATMAN MOVIE. The highly posable Scuttler features a net shooter, six stud shooters, extendable arms, an opening minifigure cockpit and hidden jetpack for Batman. Batman is also equipped with a Batarang to take on The Joker, Poison Ivy and her vine monster. Includes six minifigures.
The Znap line was an obvious reaction to K’Nex, an American construction toy company that was founded in 1993. Like those of K’Nex, Znap pieces were more elaborate than traditional Lego bricks, and could allow for more architectural creations, like bridges. Ultimately, Znap proved to be an inferior competitor and failed to catch on. To make matters worse, Lego even used those highly unprofitable Technic motors in some of the sets.
The mini figures included are: crane driver, financier, architect, bricklayer, two glaziers, a painter, a tiler, and two labourers.  There is a good mix of male and female figures with women occupying main roles (Architect & Crane driver) Plenty of room to bring in your Collectible mini figure Carpenter from series 13 and Plumber from series 9. On the top is the Welder from series 11.
Jorgen Vig Knudstorp, a former McKinsey consultant, came in as CEO in 2004 and rescued the company. He tossed series that were wasting money, cut the number of Lego pieces by more than half, and began hiring talented designers who were also passionate fans of the brand (like Stafford), rather than just smart people with impressive degrees.
The vehicles sub-theme of the Creator Expert lineup has seen box redesigns for all of the older sets and the entire collection now features the new Creator Expert logo that was introduced on the Ferrari F40 box.
I know the Admin and I are going to be trying out the I-Brix lighting system. It’s not out yet but scheduled for December to its Kickstarter backers. Not sure how much longer after that before it becomes available retail.
Now, I generally buy LEGO not as an investment but because I like it. That said, I do like getting a good value for my money. With regards to Modular Buildings, these truly are a good value to buy on the primary market (i.e. normal retail of current sets, not Bricklink, Ebay, or the likes), as an enthusiast and as an investor. The models are beautiful and they impress AFOLs and the general public alike. They are filled with interesting building techniques and cute details. They are very satisfying to build. As a set, they merit being valued highly. Now, to add icing on the cake, if you look at the parts that make the whole, you then see the real steal that Modular Building are. With US prices, the building tend to be under 7 cents per piece. Compare that to the price per piece on your favorite sets. We’re on the low end here. I don’t see sets going for less than 6 cents per piece and often times they go for 10 or 11 cents. Your bucket of bricks tends to be at the 7 cent level, but a bucket of bricks doesn’t have as a nice part selection as the modular houses do. So even if you were to buy the sets for new bricks, throwing away all the packaging and instructions and parting the whole thing out for MOCs, I still think it would be a good value.

However, I do have one other complaint about all the new sets…. too much gimmickry. All the old sets were just build up… now we have the SNOT techniquie in a dozen different variations, and a lot of building gimmicks that makes building without instructions totally impossible. You have to be spoon fed every step of the way in building these elaborate and large structures. And unfortunately… the end results have an unfortunately resemblance to the buildings you would see on the Disneyworld Main Street, rather than the small town Main Street…

Over the holidays, my niece got a larger Friends LEGO set and I helped her put it together (it had around 1200 pieces!). I was once again bitten by the LEGO bug. I hadn’t played with LEGO’s for nearly 20 years but now I had to! I looked around LEGO’s website to see what kinds of sets were available – I had seen all the movie sets and what not already in the stores, but wanted something more interesting… Saw these Creator sets and I just had to have them. I ended up getting the 4 that are currently available (Town Hall, Pet Shop, Fire Brigade & Grand Emporium). Too bad the other 2/3 are valued so highly and cost around $1000 each (too rich for my pockets!) but I am looking forward to the Chinese Theatre that will be coming out sometime this year. I wish they made more than 1 of these each year! This set took me about 5-6 hours to complete and it is magnificent! I did a time lapse photo shoot of it as well (which may have increased my build time a little). I’ve completed 3 out the 4 sets I’ve purchased and they are some of the best looking sets I’ve seen and truly had a blast putting them together. One the best parts about these buildings is that they are designed to be connected together to make a street out of them. Can’t wait to get more LEGO sets to build in the future.

Update edit: The pieces arrived about 30 minutes after this review was posted. They took 2 weeks as stated. I’d give this product 5 stars but for the glitch, and now the glitch seems to have been resolved. The delivery of the missing pieces from Legos was free of charge, of course.
Pet Shop (set number 10218), released in May 2011, is the sixth set in the Modular Buildings series. The set contains 2032 pieces, was priced at MSRP US$149/149€, and is recommended for builders 16 years of age or older. It is the first set in the series that is actually made out of two buildings that separate using the same Technic pins that link the rest of the modulars together. They can be reversed or separated and wrapped around another building. The brown building is a Brownstone style town house with elevated ground floor (atop a crawl-space below); and the sand blue building is the Pet Shop. The brown building is the only building, with the exception of Market Street, that has a basement. There is a special feature on the Pet Shop on the ground floor, where the staircase can be folded away for more access room for playing (this was an issue with Market Street). There are 4 minifigures, 2 parrots, one dog, one cat, and a fish tank with goldfish. The set also includes 3 dog bones, a ball, a frog toy, a birdhouse, a bucket and a brush. Until the Brick Bank, this was also the shortest set by height and stands at just over 25 cm. The next tallest modular is Market Street at 33 cm.[17] The set includes a full interior including a toilet, bed, kitchen and fireplace.
On a separate note, I was checking Bricklink for prices on the retired sets, and noticed the Pet Shop is up now, with two of the sellers being in USA. I guess that means its starting to hit the shelves and times running out!!

Love this camper set! Really cool for an adult collector. Unique pieces make this a must have. Would give 5 star rating if i felt the price / value ratio was slightly better, but still absolutely love this set. The side window on the camper offers a view of the extreme detail inside the camper. I get many compliments from adults on this set – and that is who i think should buy this set. Children may find the camper underwhelming so for the price might be better to avoid if you are buying for a youngster. Overall, i love this set, it fits in beautifully with an outdoor / camping scene, would prefer more pieces or a slightly lower price, would not recommend for children.
LSP borrows and adapts concepts of constructivism, and may have an important role to play in supporting multi-sensory approaches to reflecting on learning, either along with, or instead of, basic writing. The structure of Lego Serious Play allows participants the freedom of exploring and expanding on new ideas without the fear of being wrong or looking stupid. After all, they are simply playing with Legos.
