As a 24 year old, I spent the entire weekend putting this thing together. Once completed, after my thumbs have become sore from pushing in all the small pieces, I successfully picked up my cell phone and drove it across the apartment. I’ll tell you what, I’ve never had so much fun putting something together and then playing with it, except for that one time I created a work of art from sacrificial animal entrails. Anyways, happy building!
I have all 5 sets in my collection. I passed on the Market Street originally because I didn’t think that it belonged with the other 2 building…. I was wrong. So instead, I like so many others went back and purchased the set… piece by piece on Bricklink. Unfortunately you can’t do that now since certain rare pieces are going for $10/brick.
Fire Brigade (set number 10197), released in September 2009, was the fourth set in the Modular Buildings series. The set contains 2231 pieces, was priced at MSRP US$149/149€, and is recommended for builders 16 years of age or older. Modeled to look like a realistic 1930s fire station, the set includes a bell tower, an opening garage door, a 1930s style fire truck, and 4 minifigures with a fire-dog. Like Green Grocer, all floors in the Fire Brigade set are fully furnished.[15] The Fire Brigade is the first Modular to come with a vehicle, the 1930s-style fire truck. The set also includes some new, unique pieces, such as gold fire helmets and a red sliding garage door.[15]

My solution to ensure some creative Harry Potter-themed Lego fun without breaking the bank has used all of the above sources. First, I showed my daughter the downloadable plans for all the Harry Potter Lego sets which gives her great ideas, and helps her build approximations of them with our old Legos (we have tons, including a lot from my own childhood — one of Lego’s many virtues is that it’s practically indestructible!). Then, I ordered some special parts and figures from Bricklink (spiral staircases, Gryffindor banners, the Fat-Lady’s portrait hole, chocolate frogs, etc.), scored one small lot of mixed Harry Potter Lego pieces at a reasonable price on eBay, and found the rest of the pieces we needed on the lego.com site (where we got a free gift). I then left it up to my kids’ imaginations to build their own Hogwarts. The colors might be a mixed bag, but all their friends ooh and aah when they come over, and I haven’t heard one word of complaint.

But there’s much more than just Star Wars selling. A look at the best-selling kits on BrickPicker shows trains, play houses, dinosaurs, Harry Potter sets, Back to the Future Deloreans and Pirate sets all featuring.
With the new Pet shop release, it leads me to believe either the Grand Emporium or the Fire Brigade will be discontinued soon. I was in my Dark Ages when the Cafe Corner and Green Grocer were released, but would see the other two on display and while I recognized them as beautiful models, I had no need for them (Being a castle/pirate and random good set collector). It wasn’t till I realized these all could be combined to make an amazing street that I saw the value in these sets.
My impression of the “discontinued” dates listed above is that they’re the projected times when the sets should be removed from the available inventory, assuming they haven’t already sold out. IE, if 10211 hasn’t already sold out before December 2013, that’s the date that they’ll remove it from the catalog regardless. And they’ll probably put it on sale X months before then to try and encourage it to sell out.
My grandson requested this for his 10th birthday and stalked the mail carrier until it came — lucky for Prime it was quick! He loves it…and now his cousin wants one. Legos are cool because the kids have to follow the pictured directions and if they don’t follow a process their results aren’t what they want. They have to back up and see what they missed. That practice is a good one for any child to learn and good developmentally for mathematics and science. At least, that is what I am telling myself….cause he doesn’t care — he just loves his Legos and I am just fine with that!

Anyone else noticed that 6212 – X-Wing (http://www.brickset.com/detail/?set=6212-1) has disappeared from S@H (UK)? This slipped under my radar and was pointed out to me by @Kempo81. This is a great set IMO, and the length of time on-sale (nearly 4 years) suggest it was a great seller.
Cute set. Took a short time to build. Love the colors! 2 cool little mini figures with lots of great diving accessories.Bonus: The boat floats! Definitely one to buy for the kiddies or to add to your collection.

Colethegeek…. when Brickworld (Chicago) had their first LEGO convention (2008?) a few years ago (I couldn’t attend because my mother was very ill)… I had one of the attendees ask the question (to Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen and the new LEGO President) about the very poor “System” in LEGO windows at the time… and the reply from them was that the LEGO design team had the same issue with the lack of usable windows…. and that they would be working on a system. So far the 1x2x2 and 1x2x3 flat front windows are the result… along with the back side of those “less than flattering” headlight bricks, which have already been out for many years.
Batman is given a wide range of vehicles, their appearances resembling their accepted forms. Several vehicles, including the “Batman Dragster”, “Batman’s Buggy”, and “Bat-Tank”, have also been introduced. The Batmobile appears similar to the way it does in the 1989 film, while the Batboat takes on a hovercraft-like form. All the set-boxes feature a comic strip by artist Greg Hyland at the back, featuring stylized versions of the set in action.

My fiance is a big fan of Burton’s Batman Returns so I bought this as a gift for her and she absolutely loves it. The Penguin’s duck boat is awesome and so are the little penguins holding the dynamite. The little Batman submersible thing is neat too, but it’s definitely upstaged by the duck boat.
LEGO Technic system has always included a variety of different electric motors. Broadly, these divide into those powered by batteries, held in a connected battery box, or by mains electricity, via a transformer. Battery-power is the most common.

Going back to the #10232 LEGO Creator Palace Cinema, it is somewhere in the middle between the earliest LEGO Modular Buildings, with detailed exteriors, sparse interiors, and taller overall size, and the recent Modulars that are shorter, but are much more detailed on the inside and outside. The Palace Cinema looks great on the outside with colorful (and interchangeable!) posters and other details, but the inside could use a bit of extra decor. And, it is the only LEGO Modular Building with stickers (movie posters, signs, movie screen). It is also one of only three corner buildings, which makes it very useful to turn at the corner, or finish off a street. As you can see, there are some plusses and minuses to this set, but overall it is a well-liked Modular. Below, I have included the official description as well as a video-review, so you can see all the details. And if you want to purchase it, it’s available at the LEGO Creator section of the Online LEGO Shop.
Technic sets are often characterised by the presence of special pieces, such as gears, axles, and pins. Other special pieces include beams and plates with holes in them, through which the axles could be installed.[2] Some sets also come with pneumatic pieces or electric motors. In recent years, Technic pieces have begun filtering down into other Lego sets as well, including the BIONICLE sets (which were once sold as part of the Technic line), as well as a great many others.
Town Hall (set number 10224) was released in March 2012 and is the seventh set in the Modular Building line. The set contains 2766 pieces and is recommended for builders 14 and over. It is the tallest Modular set, taking the title from the Green Grocer—having three floors with generally higher ceilings than the norm, plus a clock and bell tower on the roof. It contains many interior details, such as a working elevator, along with board tables and balconies to look to the floor below. Along with many the interior decor details the building features the pilastered portico and brick façade treatments of United States Colonial Revival architecture. The 1891 date on the building represents the birth year of the founder of LEGO and when reversed, it’s the birth year of the designer, Astrid (1981). The set was priced at £149.99/US$199.99/179.99€ when released by LEGO on February 16, 2012. There are eight minifigures in the set including a wedding couple. The set had a global discontinuation date of 31 December 2014 and had a much shorter lifespan than its predecessors.
It’s interesting though, for example, doing a little research on the Modular Buildings, it looks like the average active selling life per set is about 2+ years. Strange that Market Street’s life was “cut short”. Not sure about the average life for SW, HP or the rest.
What would be of a LEGO Technic blog without a top ten list? I have built a list with the Technic sets I have been more impressed. I a few of them and I will try for sure to get the rest. So here is the list

Lego helpfully make all of their instruction sheets downloadable for free from Lego.com. (This doesn’t stop people on eBay trying to sell the instruction booklets for a  good price, however. Buyer beware!)  If you have a good supply of Lego bricks already, you could start by downloading the plans of a coveted Harry Potter set, and see how many of the pieces you already have. Probably most of them, but the colors might not be exact. But here’s the thing: don’t get caught up with being exact. Kids don’t let a desire for 100% accuracy get in the way of play. One of my daughter’s friends saw the multi-colored Hogwarts we built and exclaimed “A rainbow castle! How cool!” That reminded me kids aren’t as uptight as adults about collecting or having things perfect.

This set is an overall great value from Lego. I like the set because it’s modular and can be quickly rebuilt to make your own scenes. I also like the flat 1×1 plates – but there sure are a lot of them. As far as set weights go, this is pretty light. Lots of tiny pieces could pose an issue for younger builders. I built my first set in an hour, and my second in 45 minutes, but I could see build times easily doubling mine depending on age. Kids obviously love it, and for parents it can be frustrating to see your kids want something that doesn’t maximize pieces/dollar/gram ratios, but there’s a good econ lesson in there. Especially if you can work something in about scalpers and aftermarket pricing. A note on that – don’t pay their ludicrous prices. Keep an eye out and you can snag this set fairly easily. SlickDeals always has a thread posted when this set is in stock.

Things slowed down for 2001. In 2000 we got 19 sets, but in 2001 only 10 were released, two of which came from the Technic line, C-3PO (#8007) and Stromtrooper (#8008), and two USC sets, Darth Maul (#10018) and the Rebel Blockade Runner (#10019). Darth Maul, with 1,868 parts, was now the largest LEGO Star Wars set to have been released.
I really don’t like what’s happened in recent years, Lego has gone from a plastic building blocks toy to a highly sought after collectors item and designer brand and hobby for the rich, especially when sets retire. I don’t like this investment culture where people who don’t even like Lego buy sets with the sole intention of making huge profits from Lego fans. I’m sure this practice must annoy lego too, maybe that’s why many sets are seeing longer production runs these days to give everybody who wants the set a chance to get one at the proper RRP.

If you ever want to feel like you bought a whole bunch of new LEGOs but you have no money, then just start sorting your current stash.  Do it when your kid is NOT HOME.  Why?  Like a puppy, he will hang around you trying to grab and start building and this will mess up and you’ll snap at him.  Counterproductive.  Make it a surprise – I thought of you today- gift! I use Ikea GLIS containers but there are others such as: (Make sure they stack! Shallow is better for smaller pieces)

The minifigs in this set are great. You get Leia in her Boussh bounty-hunter disguise, Chewbacca (complete with chains), Han Solo (who snaps into a great carbonite piece imprinted with his outline), Bib Fortuna (Jabba’s majordomo), Oola (the green-toned dancer), and a Gamorrean guard. There are also two unique figures — Jabba the Hutt himself (a wonderful model), and Salacious Crumb (his capering little monkey-like creature). Finally, there is a small build for a B’omarr Monk spider-droid.

For three years, my son has been asking for this Lego Set. My thought always was that it was way to expensive but I finally broke down this year after watching the price increase over the years. On Christmas morning, my son opened all of his presents and kept looking at the last box that was under the tree. It wasn’t big enough to be the Death Star that he wanted but I wouldn’t let him open it as “it was for later”.
Lego employee here. If you have Lego store near you, look at the price tags. If it has the top left corner cut off, it’s going to be retiring soon from our shelves. It’ll be available online and then discontinued for good after that. Hope this helps!
Minifigures – The little LEGO people are called “minifigures” or “minifigs” for short. Sort them out so they can be seen in your photographs. Also sort out minifigure accessories like hats, swords, tools, etc. If you have a large number of minifigures you might consider putting them in their own listing. Minifigures are popular items on eBay.
This is a pretty crazy looking set.  Taken from Attack of the Clones, this set pieces together Obi-Wan’s Starfighter with an impressive hyperdrive module.  The hyperdrive is a blast to play with.  It has a dock for the Starfighter, two spring-loaded shooters and a quick release for the Starfighter.  The Startfighter itself isn’t going to blow you away, but it is a sleek little ship that is very well designed and a fun build.  Not as fun as the hyperdrive, but fun nonetheless.  One of our favorite features of this set are the minifigurines.  Of course Obi-Wan is included, but you also get Jango Fett and a young Boba, which is fantastic.  Rounding out the characters is a R4-P17 droid which docks on the Starfighter.  The build isn’t as lengthy as some others here, but it isn’t exactly a quick task either.  The overall fantastic visual appeal makes this set shine, but the smaller details really set it apart.
Yes, that’s a good resource as well. I also found their pricing much higher than BL and their selection is limited, but as you mentioned for rare pieces and expensive pieces it is worth to check. An issue with Bricks and Pieces though that is good to keep in mind is that their shipping time can take weeks as they ship directly from Denmark. So if you are in the USA, Canada, Australia, etc. it can take weeks. But yes, they should definitely be a resource to at least check out for comparison shopping.
The Holiday 2017 LEGO catalog has started to reach home mailboxes and there are many set that are listed as “Last Chance!” meaning that they will be probably retiring at the end of the year or shortly after. These are in addition to the LEGO Creator Palace Cinema (10232) which LEGO posted about before on social media a few weeks ago.
I don’t know how they could have made this kit any more unappealing. I feel like they reused molds from other micro kits and just tried to get a minecrafty color scheme – they completely phoned this in!

Nothing in life is easy or free, as ive said before the days of buying literally any starwars LEGO set and making 300-400% ROI in one year are long gone. There is still money to be made but its a much more complicated game now, to think that LEGO would hand you a profitable investment on a silver platter by labeling everything with “retiring soon” so you can go out at the last minute buy a bunch and flip them for loads of quick profit is crazy.

As a fan, however, it’s very difficult to tell how well a LEGO set sells for the company. Just because the aftermarket cost is high doesn’t necessarily mean that there are a LOT of people still demanding a set for the MSRP.

Notable features: Lego’s “Ultimate Collector’s Millennium Falcon” is the largest Star Wars set and the second-largest Lego set ever made. It features Lego figures of Luke Skywalker, Hans Solo, Princess Leia, Chewbacca, and Obi-Wan Kenobi.
It’s not the most expensive set on the list, but the clue to why you would want one is right there in the title. Actually the second version of the hulking quadruped snow-tank, this walking All-Terrain Armoured Transport battery-powered set is quite rare, but the open-top cockpit and grappling line for Luke’s classic lightsaber take-down make it worth the asking price.
Fun Factor: This was a really fun build. Because it is a microworld, you can easily tell what each piece represents as you are clicking them into place. Once complete, it’s really fun to create different arrangements with the modules. Even with just eight modules, you have quite a few options. I hope I can get a second one to customize the microworld even further.

As your kids grow up, they won’t want to look at a house with 6 different color bricks but I don’t think they realize that this is why they aren’t satisfied with their LEGO stash.  This is one reason why they veer towards the kits.  Their tastes are more complicated. They want art!  But instead of crying as you buy set after set, try committing to a couple of colors and just keep buying those.  Get inspired by Nathan Sawaya’s Book: The Art of Nathan Sawaya or visit The Art of the Brick Exhibit at Discovery Times Square.  If you’ll be there on Sunday August 3rd look out for me!  Read more about Nathan Sawaya in my last post about LEGO Cuusoo and Small Yellow.
As I mentioned earlier today, the LEGO Double VIP Points promotion is now going on at LEGO Stores and on [email protected]. I’ve been told by a pretty reliable source that a variety of direct-to-consumer LEGO sets are now retiring soon even though they’re not listed online. If you’ve been holding off on some of these sets, now would be a perfect time to jump on them since we exactly know when they will be going away. This is only a partial list as there could be more D2C sets that perhaps are listed as retiring soon as well.
The minifigure as we know it today, standing 4 cm. or four bricks high, has always been an iconic cornerstone of LEGO sets, designed by LEGO model builder Jens Nysgarrd Knudsen and first released in 1978. According to LEGO.com, the yellow color was chosen to display equalization in ethnic society. In 2003, minifigures with natural skin tones were released as part of the LEGO NMA Basketball line to represent specific people such as Shaquille O’Neal. These natural toned minifigures didn’t make it to LEGO Star Wars until 2005, just in time for the release of sets for Episode III, including General Grievous Chase (#7255), which included Obi-Wan Kenobi, Jedi Starfighter, and Vulture Droid (#7256), which included Anakin Skywalker. Anakin was also released as part of the Ultimate Lightsaber Duel (#7257). 2005 also saw the release of the first original trilogy sets with skin tone colored minifigures that included Imperial Inspection (#7264) with Darth Vader, Emperor Palpatine, and two Imperial Officers. Two UCS sets were released in 2005, taking the tally of sets to 22 (not including promotional sets). These were the Sandcrawler (#10144) and the largest set released up until 2005, Death Star II with 3,441 pieces. 2005 also saw several promotional sets including a figure and display stand given to guests invited by LEGO to the 2005 International Toy Fair in New York in February. The figures featured were either Luminara Unduli or Anakin Skywalker, both of which came with light-up lightsabers. At the International Toy Fair in New York, VIPs were also given a special boxed edition of Darth Vader’s Transformation (#7251). At the International Toy Fair in Nuremberg, Germany, guests were given a light-up Darth Vader polybag figure.
Mmmmm it just seems ludicrous to me that in order to save money, I have to purchase the earlier wave Lego Dimension sets from a seller in North America. Even with international postage costs, these sets (boxed) work out at an approx saving of 50% compared to the UK price. This seller must have purchased the sets when they were drastically reduced in price, and is obviously making a profit.
You could’ve felt the call while you were a kid, or during your mid-thirties. It doesn’t matter when you started your LEGO Star Wars collection, there’s are a number of sets that you definitely love collecting, because they’re emblematic in a sense, because they’re just beautiful to build and display, or simply because everybody has one and now you have to (sometimes it works for me).

LEGO Taj Mahal 10256 rerelease is sure to illicit many opinions. It is almost exactly the same as the 2008 version. Is it a good value at today’s price? How will it affect the LEGO community of kids, builders, collectors, and investors?
Any Lego Star Wars set that is still readily available, i.e. not retired, in 2017 could qualify for our list.  That is a pretty broad list and we did consider quite a few, but there are some other ways we narrowed it down.  There are a couple of dozen sets which are little more than a minifigure and a small ship or another accessory.  If one of these blew us away, we would consider it, but given the wealth of options available, that didn’t happen.

Ewok village is not a ucs kit. Why do people say these kits are ucs just because they are £200 If it does. It have a ucs label on the box it’s not ucs. The 10 part number association stopped in 2014. Ewok village is such a good set though.

Hey, I had the same thought as you. The set it way too expensive to buy and I want to actually have it assembled, not for collecting. Would you be able to share with me how you were able to get all the pieces and obtain the instructions?
I know this because I got hit with flooding twice in the last year. On top of loosing stuff I also want stuff. Especially the Slave I. I called Lego and told them everything that was going on and how much I wanted the set. They researched what they could but in the end they just don’t have that information very far in advance. They did send me an email letting me know that based on how long it has been out I probably have time.
Our overheads are fairly low and where possible we will pass on any cost savings by lowering our prices. We specialise in end of line, discontinued Lego and rare / exclusive products, and we have an ever growing collection of cheap Lego for sale.  All products sold here are brand new and will always come in sealed boxes/bags unless stated otherwise and listed in our Outlet.
My favorites are The LEGO Adventure Book, volume 1 and volume 2. These full-color books show brick-by-brick how to build the different models. They are a little simpler than the more sophisticated The Unofficial Lego Builder’s Guide that I bought the boys a few years ago.

While you’ll get the same kind of mixed bag at the online Goodwill Store, I think there is a greater chance that you’ll likely get more pieces and here’s the kicker if you are lucky – if you buy it from a location near you, you can just PICK IT UP and NOT PAY FOR SHIPPING those 15+ pounds of LEGO bricks (Sometimes shipping is $20-$30 UGH!)

Legos are a nostalgic part of everyone s childhood, yet they are still very relevant. New sets of Legos based on popular film, television, and even video game franchises are being released at a steady…
OMFGWAT? US$ 6400 for that set on Amazon? What is it made of? Carbonite? Well… I’m not the only one that came up with this idea of building one of the MOST AWESOMEST FREIGHT CARGO SHIPS EVER, that happens to be discontinued. But there’s no way I’m going to pay that.
They had a starter set of their own so that they don’t have to squabble with the brothers. Plus, if I’m completely honest, though I have a philosophical objection to pink legos (Lego was not a boy thing to start with!), I know that my girls enjoy having some pastel pieces in the mix.
Fantastic set. I love the creator line for their versatility. I remember old Lego products having ‘alternate’ configurations in photos on the box/instructions, but no instructions on building those variations.

I’d love Lego Hunger Games. I was thinking of making my own too. Actually my Dino Hunter with the CMF series will be my Katniss, though, I think she needs a nicer looking face. Katniss has resting bitch face but not that bad.

Market Street (set number: 10190) was the second of the Modular Buildings and designed by Dutch Lego fan Eric Brok.[5] It was originally released as a follow-up to Café Corner in 2007 and priced at MSRP of US$89.[6] The set contains 1236 pieces and is recommended for builders 10 years of age or older. It was one of the first leading buildings. The set features include opening doors and windows, a gate, a striped awning, and 3 minifigures.[7] Advanced construction techniques used in Market Street include: curved staircases, “stripped paint” sections on the walls, interchangeable floors,[8] Dutch/Belgian stepped roof,[3] a basement, offset windows, and wrought iron-look decoration and gate.[9]

At the same time #10218 LEGO Creator Pet Shop is shown as backordered with an expected ship date on the 20th. This set you can actually order online, and it will be shipped to you once it becomes available (in my experience usually much before the expected ship date). This set is not yet close to being retired, however if you want it for Christmas, I would suggest you get it now. A lot of LEGO fans shop for the LEGO Modular Buildings around this time of the year (both because of the Double VIP Points Period and also because people tend to buy larger sets for the holidays), causing the most desirable sets to be perpetually out of stock.

Another beautiful landmark in LEGO form here, thanks to the expert-level LEGO Creator range. This Sydney Opera House build measures up at 2,989 pieces. The shape of the building itself, with all its angled walls, makes this a hefty challenge even for a seasoned master builder.
One way to find value for money on eBay is to buy loose lots of bulk Lego. Zoom in on the photos on eBay to see if there are any pieces/sets/figures you can recognize, and be prepared to bid $10 a pound (or more) for the lot. (Non-Harry Potter Lego tends to go for around $5 a pound.) Sometimes, you might notice most of a set or several great figures amid a sea of random Legos. The question is, whether your child would want the bulk parts to build things from their imagination or only be interested in the exact sets with instructions. If you were so inclined, you could buy the large lots, remove the parts/mini-figure you really wanted and resell the rest on eBay. That’s rather time-consuming. (Although to be fair, searching eBay and the internet at large for discontinued Harry Potter Lego sets is a time-consuming process, if you want to find value for money.)
As with most other Lego sets it is excellent quality and detail! Took my son about 5-6 days working a few hours each day to complete this set. (Yes, mostly on his own with supervision to make sure parts didn’t get put backwards, which means total rebuild) He Loves all things Lego! He was so proud when it was finished and showed everybody!! There is a lot to this set as it is very large and has lots of working details. Recommend to all Lego fans!!
-Some people say it is flimsy, but this product leans a little bit more towards “collectors item” and less towards “toy,” so that’s to be expected.. It’s fine rolling back and forth, but this isn’t really meant to be played with a ton.
So what does this mean? If you see a LEGO set you like, buy it. Don’t wait and pay aftermarket prices! (although I love it when you do, some of those modulars for sale on BL are mine. Think of it as enabling my habit)
The only criticism of the set is that the building is in many ways a huge box of air. Which is somewhat unfair. It has an airy and open interior with high ceilings. But it still packs a good deal of details.
The LEGO Modular Buildings series continues with this spectacularly detailed 3-story department store, designed in a realistic scale with lots of special building techniques and rare pieces. On the street outside, citizens carry shopping bags, send letters at the mailbox, admire the window mannequins, then cool off at the ice cream stand while a busy window washer works above. Enter through the revolving doors to discover a ground-floor clothing department, complete with a cash register, fitting room, hats, jewelry, perfume, and even a selection of spare trousers. A brick-built escalator carries customers to the second floor housewares department with glassware and golden plates for special occasions, and then it’s up to the top floor for the toy department (complete with toy house and push-scooter) with an impressive chandelier above the open atrium. Up on the roof are a billboard and skylight.
Anyhow, I just wanted to alert you that the LEGO Modular Buildings are selling like hotcakes, and if you want one (or more) for the holidays you better get it now – especially the retiring ones. You can find them all in the LEGO Exclusives or LEGO Hard to Find (sort by price to easily locate them) section at the Online LEGO Shop.

I completely understand your point Rabbit, and your right, I do like that sets hold their value, and even increase over time. Being an adult and having extra money affords me the benefit of buying more than most. As a collector though, and having no intention of ever selling, I could care less if everyone had every set. I do it to relax and enjoy, not for profit. Again, I am not knocking those that do it for profit but there are many sides to every discussion. So to sum up, for me I wouldnt mind sets being more readily available.

The Town Hall (set # 10224) is the largest set of all of the modular buildings. It is also the only one which includes an elevator which is a lot of fun. The inside is fully decorated with a Mayor’s office, board room, town hall meeting area etc. for a lot of fun Lego role play! This one may have a bit of a “boxy” feel from the outside but the interior is fabulous. I especially love the bride and groom complete with wedding photographer!
Can be a seat, a bouncer, a walker and has an eating tray. Can change the seat/ walker height 3 levels to grow with your child, and set to “bounce”. All steering wheel buttons/lights/songs work as do the feet buttons and lights. The foot base also moves from front to back. It’s only ever been indoors, only taken outside for photos. Very good condition. They are $169 new
My biggest regret like most people here is not buying more than one of these sets. If you bought the Cafe Corner, you would know that LEGO literally encourages you to buy 2,3 or 6 of them, to build yourself a skyscraper…. Don’t believe me, check out the instructions for the set. Had you been insane enough to do that, you would now be considered one smart LEGO collector. I recommended to so many of my LEGO friends to buy these sets, but many of them thought they to be too expensive. I wished I had listened to myself and bought more of them.

“lego 10220 retire |why are legos so expensive”

Darth Vader’s personal flagship and the Imperial command centre in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, the Super Star Destroyer is quite the spectacle in Lego form. The hilariously diddy Star Destroyer that comes in the box shows off how grandiose this gargantuan, 3,152-piece ship really is.
The golden jewel of any Star Wars collection. There isn’t many people that can proudly say they own this 5200+ pieces set. Mostly because it’s been discontinued for years now, but also because it’s resale price can very well go beyond US $3000.
Yeah, I can imagine there’s gonna be a lot of these bigger sets on clearance this year. I actually bought the slave 1 during force Friday because the guy in the Lego shop heavily hinted it was going to be discontinued, and was considering the Temple of Airjitzu for the same reason.
Jabba’s Palace 9516 Jabba the Hutt (Re-Designed), Salacious B. Crumb, Oola, Chewbacca, Princess Leia (Boushh Disguise), Bib Fortuna (Re-Designed), Han Solo (Out of Carbonite), B’Omarr Monk, Gamorrean Guard 2012 717
You can safely mark this multi-faceted set out as ‘one for the future’. Combining bits from the that’s-no-moon space stations from both Episode I and Episode III, this incredibly popular Death Star includes a massive 24 ‘minifigs’, a multitude of moving parts and classic set-piece areas like the trash compactor and the Emperor’s Throne Room. A fan favourite which, if you do a bit of internet detective work, you can still buy for a reasonable sum – in Lego terms at least.
Fair enough, and before the internet I think that would be a valid point. I personally cannot see how paying more makes collecting more fun? Its not like you work harder (other than for your money) to buy it. Instead of buying from one web site you just buy from another.

Surprising, almost two years since I originally write this post, Amazon.com still have sellers listing complete Harry Potter Lego sets. Some are still quite expensive, but others look more reasonable once you’ve done your research and seen the much more expensive and complicated options out there. There are little stocking stuffers like the bagged Harry Potter in the Lab figure that are reasonably affordable, and larger sets like some of the Hogwarts sets (beware, there are several that make up the complete castle) and others with many unique and iconic pieces (such as the Quidditch Match set) easily available.
Put the pieces in a laundry bag or pillowcase. A fine mesh clothes bag will prevent the bricks from jamming the machine, and minimize damage to the bricks from tumbling, although scratching is still possible. You may use a pillowcase if you do not have a laundry bag, but make sure to close it tightly with a zipper or a rubber band.[4]
As you can see, there are lots of sets on sale right now to clear out older stock. What do you think? Are you finding some interesting sets on sale that you would like to build? Or are you mostly looking at sets for interesting parts? What are you planning to get? Feel free to share and discuss in the comment section below! 😉
Also, even if LEGO would allow international shipping, shipping fees would negate any savings you would get on a sale. International shipping fees can be enormous. Especially on sealed sets. I’m a BrickLink and eBay seller and after the most recent rate increases I simply had to stop selling internationally, as the fees are so crazy.
I got told by a member of staff in the Meadowhall Lego store when I bought Ecto 1 that most ideas sets only get a 1 year production run, ecto 1 got extended of the GB firehouse set that came out this year, I don’t know if that’s true but it’s what I got told.
A couple of tips I’ve picked up – watch postage fees! When putting together an order I make sure I keep the postage cost per part to a minimum. I start with the uncommon parts a seller has, then using the cheapest/common parts I need, bulk up the order so that the number of parts makes the postage per part tiny.
Legos and Star Wars. Is there a more perfect match to be made in Lego licensing heaven? To many people, no, there isn’t as both long running brands bring to mind very specific sets of nostalgia. It is no surprise that Lego choose Star Wars as the first licensing set in their product line back in 1999 (it debuted along with Winnie the Pooh Duplo that same year). The original release coincided with the release of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. Lego would continue rolling out sets tied to the latest movies while also producing classics from the original trilogy. The results are sets spanning eight theatrical movie releases (soon to be nine with The Last Jedi), and additional television shows. As far as licensed themes go, Star Wars has a long history in the Lego world.
After years of play or a “great deal” at a yard sale, you may become the proud owner of grubby clumps of dirt that could once be considered LEGO. These are not too difficult to clean, but it can be time-consuming for a large collection. While you’re at it, learn how to reverse discoloration due to sun damage.
Now that he has it open, it is a VERY impressive Lego set with 24 “little men” as they’re called in our house. There are not just bags of Legos but boxes of Legos at it is such a large set with over 3,800 pieces. The directions are in a spiral bound book, which could make the task of putting the set together look daunting, but he’s loving it. I’m loving that here it is mid-January and he’s still putting it together.
The Taj Mahal is the supreme ruler of the most iconic images of India. This magnificent building is ideal for a Lego replica because the four sides of the structure are perfectly identical, creating a mirrored image on each side. Here, the architectural elements of self-replicating geometry and symmetry come into play.
I ended up purchasing a second set of the Pet Shop and I’ll be totally honest I can’t remember if I either had the idea originally or saw it on-line, but it can be fun to build the second apartment building as a mirror to the first one. Also a bit of a mind bender if I remember correctly! I have mine set up with the two doors close to each other but it’s certainly easy enough to switch them around if you prefer them that way.
Hm… that’s an interesting point. And very well could be. I do remember hearing that LEGO will rename the Disney Princess line to simply Disney. Looks like this is going to be a much bigger theme for LEGO, not just pink castles for girls. I expect more awesome sets on the level of the Disney Castle. But we will see… 🙂

The Millennium Falcon set comes in at the top of our list simply because it’s freaking awesome.  It is among the two or three most recognizable images from the entire Star Wars franchise, so it easily checks the nostalgia box.  The set is huge at 1329 pieces and takes a few hours to complete.  Inside the box you get the awesome Falcon itself, complete with the iconic holochess board, cockpit, and even spring loaded blasters.  Additionally, you get a wealth of minifigurines including Han Solo, Chewbacca, Rey, Finn, and BB-8 (you get two more, but who cares about those guys?).  The minor complaint here is that this is The Force Awakens version, so you get old Han, rather than A New Hope Han.  That’s easy enough to ignore, however, with the all-around spectacular set included here.
➡ ONLINE LEGO SHOP RETIRING SOON: While the US version of the Online LEGO Shop hasn’t been updated yet with sets retiring soon, the UK version lists a number of large and exclusive sets that are scheduled to retire. This means that once the current stock is gone, LEGO will make no more of these sets. Four of the sets are from the LEGO Ideas line, which are limited release to begin with. The four sets are: #21108 LEGO Ideas Ghostbusters Ecto-1, #21302 LEGO Ideas The Big Bang Theory, #21303 LEGO Ideas WALL-E, and #21304 LEGO Ideas Doctor Who. None of these sets are on sale, but if you want one, it is best to get them now before they will disappear and prices on the secondary market go up. You can find them under the LEGO Ideas section of the Online LEGO Shop.
Value: I was happy to pay $34.99 for this set. For Minecraft fans, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. For Minecraft/LEGO fans, it’s simply a must-have. You get 408 pieces, which is about $0.085 per piece. For a licensed set, that’s actually below average. Of course, that’s probably because it relies so heavily on 1×1 tiles and plates. Still, you get eight 6×6 plates, quite a few bricks, and a brick separator. I thought the brick separator was a nice touch for separating all the tiny plates. There are only three exclusive pieces for the Steve and creeper heads. You get an extra Steve head, so if you add a red brick (or whatever color you want), you can make a second adventurer. To piece this set together on BrickLink dot com would cost about $50-$60.

Scrub water-sensitive parts with a dry towel or toothbrush. Set aside any pieces with stickers or printed patterns, as well as any multi-part units that are not meant to be separated, such as turntables. Scrub these with a dry towel, or remove serious grime using a new toothbrush.
You forgot that the MechDragon is on sale. But then that’s not really retiring soon. What I don’t understand is why the V-wing, Vulture Droid, and AT-TE are retiring so early. The V-wing and Vulture droid are 2014 releases even! 😕 Not that I’m complaining, I have the V-wing already and my brother has the AT-TE, so we’re good.
Finally, look for high quantities of a piece in the parts-list. My rule of thumb is to look at anything that uses double digits – so 10 or more. Many times I can disregard small pieces like 1×1 bricks that I know I have plenty of. Once you identify parts you are concerned about, click on that part’s number, select the right color, and see what they are selling for. It is important to keep an eye on the country the seller is from since shipping will eat at your budget faster than anything else. It was during this time I discovered that I not only needed fifty 1×8 sand-green bricks, but that they were each about $2.50. After total for that, I discovered I also needed fifty-six 1×2 sand-green bricks with a groove. They were just as expensive. Not great for my budget. And even after being able to identify some of these obvious expensive pieces, you can still run into rare parts you might not have expected. In the case of the #10185 LEGO Modular Green Grocer, there was a blue arch piece that came in very few other sets, thus it was expensive.
You’re not going to believe us when we tell you, but Legos, the children’s toys responsible for countless childhood memories and foot injuries, have garnered a larger return on investment than gold in the last 15 years. Yes, Legos. Those little Danish plastic bricks, when purchased wisely, can make you lots of money. Why? How? Because Legos have been beloved for years, and now that the adults who grew up on them have more disposable income to invest, a secondary market has emerged, with pristine sets increasing 12% each year since 2000. It’s the nostalgia economy.
“Holy Lego set, Batman!” as Robin would probably say following the purchase of this awe-inspiring Lego set. This Lego set is one of the best around, with an array of detailed pieces and intricate designs. Some of the pieces included in the set are Alfred the Butler, Batman (black suit), Bruce Wayne, Robin, Mr. Freeze (with complete weapon assembly), Mr. Freeze’s Henchman, The Penguin, Robin’s jet-ski, the Batblade ice sledge, and the Penguin’s submarine.
Dang, I was hoping to save money to get something like the Sandcrawler or the Ewok Village. I am also shocked to see Dr. Who and The Big Bang Theory up on that list to. I wonder if Lego is having supply issues again, or if demand is so high it brought about a fast end of those projects.
Then there are the seller fees on eBay . And the shipping costs – remember, Lego is bulky and could cost quite a bit to ship. And if you’re selling to a collector, they’ll expect it to arrive in good condition, so packing costs go up again.
Four years later, Lego is still high on her Christmas list. I’m happy to contribute, albeit without spending inordinate amounts of cash. While specific sets are great, there are other ways to please your Lego-maniacs. Here’s how, you, too, can save some pennies on Lego.

If find the challenges of putting together a set fun in itself. I’m currently putting together 10231 Space Shuttle Explorer, 10197 Fire Station, 8480 Technic Space Shuttle and 6395 Victory Raceway (which I desperately wanted, but never owned as a kid). I could easily buy them on eBay or elsewhere, but the challenge of this is far more interesting.
➡ LEGO MINECRAFT SETS ON SALE: LEGO Minecraft sets are not just great for Minecraft fans, but they are also excellent parts-packs for basic LEGO bricks in earthy colors, especially when they are on sale. Some of the current sets on sale that are marked as retiring soon include the #21127 LEGO Minecraft The Fortress (the only set with a Minecraft horse!), the #21122 LEGO Minecraft The Nether Fortress, the #21124 LEGO Minecraft The End Portal, the #21121 LEGO Minecraft The Desert Outpost, and the #21126 LEGO Minecraft The Wither. You can find them under the LEGO Minecraft section or under Sales and Deals at the Online LEGO Shop.
My two little sisters were looking forward to getting the Lego Friends hourse riding camp set, (the $100, whatever it’s called,) and so we were on the Lego shopping site, and I saw that it was on clearance for $49.99. And immediately I was like, “YOU…WHA-BUT YOU GOT IT SOOO GOO-” and then I realized it was sold out 🙂 🙁 . I was seriously considering picking one up for myself, for the pieces.
Our whole family is so excited about Lego’s Creator line. Our very advanced 6 year old loves to build Legos however the really cool ones that keep him interested are still too advanced for him. Our second problem is that once they are built they are just dust collectors. NOT THIS ONE. He was able to build it with minimal help and he can actually play with it too! There are lots of cool real working features like the tree house pulley We can’t wait to add more creator pieces to our collection.
Thanks for these tips for buying LEGO sets. It’s good to know there are sites where I can go to compare prices. I would like my son to have his own LEGO collection, so I should do this to find the best price for a cool set for him to put together.
I don’t know how they could have made this kit any more unappealing. I feel like they reused molds from other micro kits and just tried to get a minecrafty color scheme – they completely phoned this in!
Thrill your kids with the LEGO Brick Box. This big set contains various sized bricks in 33 different colors. Kids can be as creative as they dare to be while playing with these toy building bricks. With lots of different windows and doors, along with othe more
If they re-release sets that gained worth, that won’t do them a favor i think. Some sets i only bought because i hope they gain worth. If they start re-releasing everything good, i won’t do that anymore.
My son really loves this set. He has built it, taken it apart and built it again multiple times. He and my 3 year old daughter have so much fun playing with the characters and the horses in and on the castle. Pricey but definitely worth it- I cannot begin to calculate the amount of hours this has kept *both* of my kids occupied. I also love that, when built, the structure is very sturdy and easy to move around. The kids regularly move it from the play table to the floor and back again without any pieces breaking, etc. which is so common with legos.

If you do not have these sets yet, here’s your final chance to get them at their usual retail price. Add them to your collection ASAP (if you do not have them yet) before the prices start to inflate (and you may have to pay unreasonable prices to get them from the secondary market in the future…)
Design: This set uses a modular design. If you follow the instructions, you get eight distinct modules, four above ground and four below ground. You can arrange these in dozens of different ways to create tiny cave networks and a multi-layered effect. The caves have several different kinds of hidden resources that you can only see when you take the top layer off. The overall effect of the design is a pretty good representation of the Minecraft world.
@myscrnnm: On most tape-sealed LEGO boxes there is a printed production run code on one of the seals, e.g. XXS6 with XX being the week of production, with S being Europe and 6 being 2016 (or 2006). On glued boxes the code is embossed or, since recently on some sets, printed.

You’ve put way more though into this than have. Since there is a lack of white bearded faces, I was considering Count Duku?’s face for president Snow. I got it some time ago but I can’t quite remember how and maybe use BrickForge hero hair in white.
Nice! Yeah, I have seen several people do that mirror image setup. The Pet Shop is such an incredibly versatile set. It is one of the reasons it stayed around for so long. Another is that both are good looking, but simple buildings, so they nicely fit in anywhere, and also easy to customize. The Pet Shop can be turned into any other shop with just some simple modifications. And the apartment side can be furnished in so many ways. Great set all in all. I’m glad you were able to get a second one. 🙂
For me, secondary market is a blessing. I have a chance to buy retired technic sets thanks to collectors and investors and i don’t have a problem with paying an extra cash for those sets i call it “delay tax” because i just came out of my Dark Ages.

I’ve always been in 2 minds about the Sydney opera house, it just seems so expensive compared to Tower bridge and especially Big Ben both of which I have, they both have many more pieces for less money. I managed to get Doctor Who for £35 on amazon, I got Big Bang theory with VIP points, own ewok village and Wall-E. That leaves the sandcrawler which has never been a must buy like ewok village was.
REALITY it’s location, location, location! What has all of our parents said to use at least a 1000 times on your life span???? “If I only kept that box it came in.” Yeah you have the the first two in the series bUT do you have the boxes for them?
Once I have several shop pages open (for rare parts it should be no more than 1-5), I select to show all items each store has from my wanted list, then compare what they have and their prices. I will do this in part to get the best deal and to fulfill a good portion of my wanted list, and also to get over the seller’s minimum order value (if they have one). This allows me to pay a few cents more on a common element while saving dollars on a truly rare one.
