Yes, you can get lucky at thrift stores but you can really increase your chances by shopping Goodwill online!  I honestly don’t think you can get a better deal at buying used LEGO bricks anywhere else. For sure this beats many eBay offerings hands down.
So if you have any LEGO sets to sell you can contact Brian and his team and see what you can work out. I have also added a quick banner-link to the sidebar on the right (the bright-green box) to reach Brian’s LEGO buying page and regularly updated LEGO Buy List. This is a great resource you may want to take advantage of now or in the future when you need to move some of LEGO collection.

If you find yourself in that position there are a couple of websites selling retired sets for way cheaper than eBay or Amazon. You can try http://www.chowrentoys.com in the US or Brick-a-brac-uk in the UK.
Mmmmm it just seems ludicrous to me that in order to save money, I have to purchase the earlier wave Lego Dimension sets from a seller in North America. Even with international postage costs, these sets (boxed) work out at an approx saving of 50% compared to the UK price. This seller must have purchased the sets when they were drastically reduced in price, and is obviously making a profit.
Finally, look for high quantities of a piece in the parts-list. My rule of thumb is to look at anything that uses double digits – so 10 or more. Many times I can disregard small pieces like 1×1 bricks that I know I have plenty of. Once you identify parts you are concerned about, click on that part’s number, select the right color, and see what they are selling for. It is important to keep an eye on the country the seller is from since shipping will eat at your budget faster than anything else. It was during this time I discovered that I not only needed fifty 1×8 sand-green bricks, but that they were each about $2.50. After $125 total for that, I discovered I also needed fifty-six 1×2 sand-green bricks with a groove. They were just as expensive. Not great for my budget. And even after being able to identify some of these obvious expensive pieces, you can still run into rare parts you might not have expected. In the case of the #10185 LEGO Modular Green Grocer, there was a blue arch piece that came in very few other sets, thus it was expensive.
This is a really R E M A R K A B L E Lego creation! You can’t miss this bus to Billund! 😀 Epic door opening mechanism and many other interesting features are visible in this Lego Technic motorized model. “Hallbricks” spent almost one year building it… If you wish you can support this project on Lego Ideas. Enjoy!!! 😀
Lego discontinues sets for a lot of different reasons… Mostly because of demand for parts I am sure, they cannot thin out their lines to keep 1000 more sets in production, plus sets get old, they do.. most people buy one and they want to see the next one out.. therefore if they were to make more of them then no one would buy.. and no, only selling 3 sets to people over 1 year is not their idea of good sales…. Then they would need to list a lot of their warehouse for 50% off.. again not something they want to do…. I mean look at the steamrollers and pig farms, which would not die… I think the biggest reason is to keep the lines fresh.. not to mention sets can come back at times (see the Metroliner, Main street, Black Falcons Fortress and Guarded Inn and recently the Maersk Container ship).
Fantastic set. I love the creator line for their versatility. I remember old Lego products having ‘alternate’ configurations in photos on the box/instructions, but no instructions on building those variations.
The Star Wars™ Red Five Starfighter™ set 10240 was rumored (and known) to have been retired for many months now. However, the (US) Lego Store did not show this set as “Retired Product” until just a few days before this Read more »

Rare part design is typically specialized pieces. Minifigures are the biggest rare part design in most sets due to unique prints. Other candidates are special doors/windows, animals, hoses and printed elements. At least these are the parts that have been rare for me and didn’t have in my collection. You should have a general knowledge of what is in your own spare parts collection, and also look for things that appear to be unique to the set.

Fire the BARC speeder’s powerful new spring-loaded shooter and knock down the Droids! Includes a BARC Trooper with blaster, 2 Battle Droids and 2 Super Battle Droids. •Features speeder with new spring…
While the Imperial Star Destroyer includes a to-scale Tantive IV for those with a burning desire to recreate the opening scenes of A New Hope, purists will likely fancy this much-larger version of the Rebel’s Corellian vessel as well. Leia’s Corvette model ship is incredibly rare and can also lay claim to introducing a new ‘dark red’ brick into the Lego tool-kit.
Let me add one tip to your “Working around problem parts” paragraph that I learned way to late in the process : systematically download the instructions so that, when a hard-to-find-part related problem arises, you can locate in the instructions where the part is used, so you decide if you work around it or not.
This set contains 996 pieces, spread between 10 numbered bags and one unnumbered bag of base plates. The instructions are printed on three booklets, bound to a sheet of cardboard. No paperweights required. Also included is a sheet of stickers with brick patterns, as well as a sheet of malleable plastic with three flags.

Lego Star Wars Resistance Retiring Soon The Lego Star Wars series is getting upgraded day by day with the addition of new and advanced models. I ended up purchasing a second set of the Pet Shop and I’ll be totally honest I can’t remember if I either had the idea originally or saw it on-line, but it can be fun to build the second apartment building as a mirror to the first one. Also a bit of a mind bender if I remember correctly! I have mine set up with the two doors close to each other but it’s certainly easy enough to switch them around if you prefer them that way.
Stir the pieces around once an hour. Stirring the small pieces around with a stick or gloved hand will dislodge the bubbles causing them to float. Try this every hour or so for best results. If you leave pieces floating too long, they can develop a cloudy white marking along the water line.[6]
If you haven’t collected all of the Rogue One sets you want, now is a good time to start. LEGO designer Hans Burkhard Schlömer noted that the sets for the first Star Wars standalone film are getting discontinued.
Delivery will almost always be made by a courier or signed for method of posting, and all items will be well packaged to ensure the product stays in perfect condition. We also offer free shipping on any spend above £35. There is also the option for an enchanced postage service, whatever the level of spend. This is certainly valuable for last minute purchases or if you want to guarantee a faster delivery. We also use stronger packaging on sets posted with an enchanced service, we hate to see box damage, especially on rarer sets we sell.
Thanks to Steven Morin for emailing in about this as a reminder. On LEGO Shop@home you can now search for sets that are due to be retired soon. Most are this year’s sets that only have a year’s shelf life, but if you want to complete a certain theme it can at least give you an idea of what you need to get first. However, it’s the exclusives on the list that will interest most of us and as we predicted the other month there are some big sets going out by the end of 2015.
“Brian’s Toys (brianstoys.com), founded in 1994, has primarily been a retailer of Star Wars, G.I. Joe, Transformers, and Marvel toys and collectibles for the last 18 years. We started selling LEGO sets about 4 years ago and are now aggressively purchasing sealed (and opened boxes with new, unused contents) LEGO sets.
I got this Lego Creator Treehouse set for my six year old and she really love it. I did help her along the way as the there are many tiny pieces which some little ones may not be able to hold tight and snap into the right places. This set is great for a weekend to spend time together building it. The instructions are very clear and laid out step by step.I would say at a mellow relaxed pace this set takes a good hour from start to finish with you helping your little one. I can also imagine this toy being fun even for much older kids if they are fans of Lego sets.

I wanted to build a big set, and display it at my house. So, off to google we go, and search Biggest Lego set EVER. Mmmhh… the Taj Majal it’s not what I have in mind for a Star Wars related set. Ok, let’s look at the second biggest one. A-HA! We have a winner!. At 5195 pieces, the Ultimate Collection Series Millennium Falcon is what I was looking for! Let’s buy that one…
The components come down to “what’s in the box?”  This is an important aspect of any Lego set, but arguably even more so in a licensed theme like Star Wars.  As a fan of the movies, you know the sets before you start building them.  Sets which have the perfect balance of nostalgia and just plain cool features will inevitably rise to the top for us.  For more info and reviews please visit our friends at Ninja Brick and read their Star Wars reviews.
Princess Leia’s ship contains a “modest” 1,748 pieces and any rebel fighter would die to keep it out of the hands of Darth Vader. It was released in 2001 for $199.99 it’s now retired and goes for just shy of $1,000 at auction. Let qui-gons be bygones and add this iconic ship to your collection today!
I think you would have to look at it in an entrepreneur/business man’s point of view to understand it. If people aren’t buying enough of the sets to keep a good profit after a few years, Lego might find that they would make more money using the same pieces if they were to discontinue the set and release a new one people would buy more of. If you already have an old set that is still on the market, there wouldn’t be much point in buying a second or third. (assuming its for personal use.)

Sometimes you may run into the issue with a piece that is just not convenient to get. Or it is possible that facing $3 per piece is bit hard to swallow. Thankfully there are a number of work-around solutions to problems like these. The first is finding if there is a part with a Matching ID (MID). If you go to the parts inventory of the set on BrickLink, parts with a MID have a mark in a column to the far right. This means that if you go to the very bottom of the inventory you can find parts that are slightly different (like they have hollow studs instead of filled or they have a few extra notches), but essentially they will look and act identical.

“original lego sets for sale lego tie”

Judith, individual sellers could be getting their stock from various places. We do get regular sales on Dimensions sets – usually 50% off, sometimes more. Also, the dollar is pretty strong now compared to the pound, so there is that as well. I also shop from international sellers from time to time. European sellers usually have a much better stock on rare parts and colors. 🙂
The pièce de résistance of the Lego Star Wars Ultimate Collector Series with a price-tag that beggars belief. Consisting of a whopping 5,195 bricks and weighing in at just over 10kg, the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy is the second-largest Lego set ever and is the jewel in the Lego Star Wars crown.
Yay! Doesn’t that feel good when something comes together like that? Glad you live close enough to a pick-a-brick wall. It’s an hour’s drive either way for me, so I went with the brick box, but still feel better than a set.
It’s free advice but make sure you do the math! You will hopefully have better luck than me because it is confusing!  Most sellers are pros but once in a while, you might get someone looking to unload a stash.  Be ready for that.
We also use stronger packaging on sets posted with an enchanced service, we hate to see box damage, especially on the rarer sets we sell.
Of particular note are the twin missile launchers that fire when you turn the launcher and press the release switch. Kids will enjoy lining up the villainous Count Dooku and General Grievous in front …
Built by LEGO Master Builder Erik Varszegi back in 2005 for the Star Wars Celebration III, the Venator Star Destroyer is a little over 8-feet long and 44-inches wide, weighing in close to 150 pounds. It was the largest LEGO model most had seen at the time, which means Varszegi had to use glue and incorporate a steel frame into the LEGO creation. But now six years later, another LEGO fan has built his own version of the Venatir, but with 100% LEGO elements and no glue. Talk about devotion!
If, like me, you were at elementary/primary school when you first saw Star Wars then there’s a very good possibility that, also like me and my peers, you grew up playing with LEGO. My bedroom floor was literally carpeted with LEGOs, and I built makeshift dioramas out of it so that I could create some of my favorite moments from the film(s) with my Star Wars action figures from Kenner/Palitoy.
The battle is about to begin! The Dragon soldiers are on the march toward the King’s Castle, and only the White Knight can save the day. Who will win, the King’s soldiers or the Dragon soldiers? You decide with this awesome LEGO Castle set.
The market for old toys on eBay is much bigger than just Lego. If you’ve got some old childhood clutter just gathering dust, here are 8 ways to tell if your old toys could be worth more then just memories while our guide to getting the most cash when selling old toys on eBay can be found here .
Your child will have a renewed interest in the things he already owns and you won’t be adding more stuff to your household. Well, besides the book. But, they are available on Kindle, so you can save space that way, too.
The gate is approximately 10.5 inches tall, 5 inches across, and 2.5 inches deep with the drawbridge up. The drawbridge is able to raise and lower via ropes winding around a rod connected to knobs on the side. The gate raises and lowers in a similar fashion, although it does not have the same resistance. A lock is included on the side to keep the gate in one position.
While you’ll get the same kind of mixed bag at the online Goodwill Store, I think there is a greater chance that you’ll likely get more pieces and here’s the kicker if you are lucky – if you buy it from a location near you, you can just PICK IT UP and NOT PAY FOR SHIPPING those 15+ pounds of LEGO bricks (Sometimes shipping is $20-$30 UGH!)
“GT Mechanicmaniac” is the name of the G E N I O U S who created this LEGO MOC Technic VW Phaeton 6.0 W12 in scale 1-7. The video lasts almost 30 minutes, but if you really love Technic creations, if you really are a purist of this art, you’ll savor eagerly every detail of this monster. So…Enjoy!!! 😀
My 6YO loves Lego. We were buying small sets, but my husband found that he could buy a box of random parts on Ebay for much cheaper. He bought a set that had…I forget, but I think 1000 pieces, for $50 this fall. I’ll check with him, but I think it was that, or maybe 500 pieces. It seemed like a good deal. It’s very random, but my son loved it. That’s my only tip so far. I’ve looked on Craigslist, but with no luck. I’ve never seen them at thrift stores, but I’ll keep my eyes open for them. Thanks.
Don’t get me wrong.  I think LEGO bricks are super cool! I am a sucker for anything translucent and those miniature replicas of real-life objects steal my heart. (we have videocameras, pizzas, goggles, alligators, etc)  I love them just as much as I love those porcelain bathtubs of handcrafted wooden dollhouses. To me, LEGO is its own language – like visual poetry.
Well, it’s finally happened. I’m afraid that in the end, I just can’t justify the cost of the Sandcrawler or Ewok Village, but being prepared to see desirable sets retire and not go on the hunt for expensive secondary market stuff is the price I pay for keeping my collecting manageable financially. I’ll look forward to what 2017’s sets bring…
@bok2 How exactly can I tell if a set has had more than one “run”? The LEGO Store in my town has had the Big Bang Theory almost continually since it came out, and I’ve seen it on sale several times this past year.
The LEGO is an impressive pirate ship from Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean movie. It features a hinged bow section, opening skeleton hull with decay and destruction detailing, movable rudder, collapsible main mast, and two further masts. Other features include a long bowsprit with crow’s nest and mast, tattered sails, detailed quarterdeck, plus a rowboat with two oars. Weapons include two gray swords, three black swords, a pistol and the Silent Mary Masthead’s shield and sword elements. [ 332 more words ]
Probably a silly question, but can’t Judith buy from the US site? I’ve often wondered. I grew up in Germany and England, so the regional sets would interest me. A central site offering all sets to everyone would be nice.
To sum it up: It’s really hard to save money when you something that is not cheap. We must face the music. They are really so darn cute.  But if you can share with your kids how to really value them, perhaps shopping for them won’t be so depressing and you will spend less money and energy on them.  Knowing their price and their potential for self-expression will help the kids understand why they should take care of their pieces.  And when you are done with them, store them away for the future grandkids (with instructions too)- thankfully, LEGOs are pretty small.
My 8 year old son and I went to the Salvation Army two days ago. It was right around the corner from my doctors, so on a whim and looking for used skylanders figures we went. We found 6 gallon size ziplock baggies full to busting of legos! The best part was they were $1.99 each! I left my name and number and they said if they get any more in they’d give me a call. They also said to give other thrift stores a call, everyone knows what legos are and will look to see if they have any. (Saves a lot on gas)
Fantastic set. I love the creator line for their versatility. I remember old Lego products having ‘alternate’ configurations in photos on the box/instructions, but no instructions on building those variations.
Great article!  I LOVE all these Star Wars Lego sets.  (Small correction:  #2 on your list is 6211 Imperial Star Destroyer, but the image is of the even more awesome 10030 Imperial Star Destroyer with 3096 pieces).  Also, for me personally, I’d replace #12 AT-AT Walker with the 10178 Motorized AT-AT that walks around my kitchen and bumps into things.  🙂
My son lpved Legos and also Bionicles. We lived overseas and when he returned to the US he left all of it with us. I ended up giving away the Lehos, but the Bionicles I brought back for him. Amazingly, he now works for Legoland Florida!

I finally got a copy of this set so I can write an actual review. I find many reviews on Amazon are negative because of item availability and aftermarket pricing. So here is an actual review of the set, not the market. Please see the customer image gallery for my build uploads.
We basically have three options when a LEGO set that we want has been retired already. We can always pretend the set doesn’t exist and put it far out of our minds. The next option is take advantage of the secondary market like eBay, BrickLink, etc. You will likely find the set you are looking for, but unless you stumble upon an amazing deal, you will have to pay significantly more than the original price. This could mean having to wait longer to save up enough money for that retired set, and in the meantime you may also miss out on newer sets that you want. This can turn into a vicious pattern of always playing catch up and ending up spending far more than intended.

From her crown to her torch, The Statue of Liberty is an iconic monument and symbol of freedom from tyranny, financial hardship, and suffering for many immigrants since the late 1800’s. She was given to the United States by France on October 28, 1886 as a gift for the centennial of the American Declaration of Independence.

For those wondering, the admin is still okay. Unfortunately the utility workers in charge of restoring power have just been surveying up to this point. Hopefully they’ll start actually fixing things soon.
Yes, TLG wanted to make small Technic sets as well, because not everyone has 50$ to spend on something big enough for those figures to sit in. Besides, with Technic, as W3ird N3rd said, you are the one controlling the set, not the minifigure.
The Znap line was an obvious reaction to K’Nex, an American construction toy company that was founded in 1993. Like those of K’Nex, Znap pieces were more elaborate than traditional Lego bricks, and could allow for more architectural creations, like bridges. Ultimately, Znap proved to be an inferior competitor and failed to catch on. To make matters worse, Lego even used those highly unprofitable Technic motors in some of the sets.
My 6 year old son just had a major surgery, and so he got lots of “surgery gifts” after. This was one of them. He asked me for this because he is a huge lego fan. This set has a TON of pieces, but he was able to complete it on his own. The functionality of this set is really cool. Lots of moving parts, booby-traps, etc. I was playing with him and was enjoying messing around with all of the gadgets on this one. It also comes with several of the batman characters too. It will take a young kid about 2 hours to build, due to the amount of pieces. If an adult or older child helps you can probably knock it out within an hour. Very cool set!
Whether you’re a huge Star Wars fan or not, the name “Millennium Falcon” has definitely crossed your eardrum. Originally a cargo vessel designed to lug around cargo until it was heavily, and illegally, modified to become the ship everyone now knows to be modest, but very powerful. For the Lego collectors looking for the best Lego Star Wars sets, this one is a steal. Many reviews of the product state that the finished product, “… looks exactly like the Millennium Falcon. Every little detail visible in the movie is present on the model.”

Juniors: Juniors sets are for kids ages 4 to 8. These sets feature traditional LEGO bricks, but the sets are smaller and easier to build. These sets can introduce children to building by following instructions.
With these sets it is possible to build or convert manually-operated mechanical movement to motorized using electric motors which are controlled via switches or IR remote control. Future plans for this set include more parts which will add even more function/control possibilities.[citation needed]. Lego has already started to design and sell Lego Technic models (sets) which can be easily retrofitted with the Power Functions system. For example, models like the 8294 Excavator and 8295 Telescopic Handler are sold like classic Lego Technic models with manual motorization but are designed with free space for the Power Functions components with factory instructions on how to perform the conversion to an electrically operated model.

I have all 5 sets in my collection. I passed on the Market Street originally because I didn’t think that it belonged with the other 2 building…. I was wrong. So instead, I like so many others went back and purchased the set… piece by piece on Bricklink. Unfortunately you can’t do that now since certain rare pieces are going for $10/brick.

Having said all that… I really like this set and think it’s a worthy addition to any LEGO city/camping scene. See my images. However, since it would be very difficult to find this set for the retail price, and I would be reluctant to recommend you pay the secondary market premium, I would recommend an alternative.

We gave this to our son for his 8th birthday. It was challenging for him, which is good. He stuck with it and after rebuilding a couple of parts to get it right, he was finished. I liked that it was challenging becuase he usually rushes through a LEGO set and he has extra pride in this one. There is a working elevator that changes Bruce Wayne into Batman and other cool features. My son LOVES it!! As always with LEGO, is is well-constructed.

What may make more of a difference is what type of building you prefer. Ever since TH, I think that the line has drifted away from making massive buildings and focused more on details/interior. A lot of people like this, but I am not one of them. The three I own (FB, GE, PS) are my three favourite, while the most recent three (PC, PR and the Detective Office) are among my least favourite.
I mainly collect Technic and Star Wars sets, but I’ve always admired the detail in the modular buildings. Is it worth getting into the modular buildings now that I can no longer get the Town Hall, Emporium, etc. without paying ridiculous prices? I’m not that bothered by missing out on the grocer or firehouse or stuff like that, but the look of the town hall kind of ties a downtown area together and the emporium gave a shopping district. Anyone know if LEGO plans on continuing this series for a long time? Missing 3-4 of buildings won’t be a huge deal if we know that there are going to be 5 or 10 more released in the future.

FB, GE and TH are all retired now but the prices aren’t too crazy (relatively speaking at least). I’m not sure how expensive the pieces would be. I don’t imagine the garage pieces, gold helmets and white bell tower pieces in FB being cheap. The green domes are the only pieces that jump out to me in GE, but I could be missing something. I imagine the garage pieces and orange bricks may be pricy for TH.
I bought this LEGO Ultimate Building Set with 405 Pieces in it for my son for Christmas. He is a Lego lover extraordinaire and little Mr. Creative. This set is just the right size for any possibility you could think of. It allows for great imagination as it is lots of basic pieces. He loved the fact that it has its own plastic box with a lid to store his Legos in. There is also room for lots of extra parts and pieces. This also included a base plate, windows, doors, and wheels. A great value for either a beginner builder or for the one who has everything as you can never ever have too many Legos.

“rare retired lego sets lego star wars usc”

A note on aftermarket sales: This set is incredibly popular. I imagine that LEGO was surprised by the demand. The aftermarket prices have come down to ~$60, which is still way to high. But that is how a collector’s market works. Lots of people on here are rating the set low because they paid 2-3 times retail for it, which is the buyer’s fault as much as the seller’s. Many people are also upset with the behavior of sellers who list these sets at high prices, which seems really weird to me. It seems like buyers who are willing to pay those prices should be happy the fact that the sets are available at all. Buyers that pay that much and then get bent out of shape about it need to look to themselves. Prices go up on collectibles like this because enough buyers are willing to pay for it, simple supply and demand. If you or your kid is wanting this set, just sit tight. There will be more available at retail price soon. If not, just get some LEGO bricks in Minecraft colors and make your own. You’ll be a lot happier.
Surprisingly, the sleek, AT-AT-toppling Snowspeeder is rarer than its space-based brethren the X-Wing Fighter. As one of the early entries in the sought-after Ultimate Collector Series, the Snowspeeder unfortunately doesn’t include a minifigure for Luke Skywalker’s short-lived co-pilot Dak Ralter. Poor Dak.

I was checking out the online LEGO shop today and noticed several sets that were marked retiring soon and was quite surprised. Specifically the Rebel Combat Frigate and Doctor Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum which both came out in August 2016.
But after seeing the movie and understanding the importance of this ship (and how a great build it is), I changed my mind and now it’s in the fourth position of my recommended list. And believe me, you won’t get a better size/price relation with other than this set.
I haven’t tried it myself yet, since my daughter is a little young for Legos, but I’ve heard great things about Pley. It’s a monthly Lego and Duplo rental service, kind of like Netflix for Legos. It could be a great way to try some of the cool sets before you spend lots of money on them, since we all know that just because it’s expensive doesn’t mean it will hold your child’s interest. It could also cut down on clutter, since you get to use lots of new sets without having to store the old ones.
You’re not going to believe us when we tell you, but Legos, the children’s toys responsible for countless childhood memories and foot injuries, have garnered a larger return on investment than gold in the last 15 years. Yes, Legos. Those little Danish plastic bricks, when purchased wisely, can make you lots of money. Why? How? Because Legos have been beloved for years, and now that the adults who grew up on them have more disposable income to invest, a secondary market has emerged, with pristine sets increasing 12% each year since 2000. It’s the nostalgia economy.
Fantastic set. I love the creator line for their versatility. I remember old Lego products having ‘alternate’ configurations in photos on the box/instructions, but no instructions on building those variations.
If find the challenges of putting together a set fun in itself. I’m currently putting together 10231 Space Shuttle Explorer, 10197 Fire Station, 8480 Technic Space Shuttle and 6395 Victory Raceway (which I desperately wanted, but never owned as a kid). I could easily buy them on eBay or elsewhere, but the challenge of this is far more interesting.
Even on eBay you will have several options, depending on how much money you hope to make and how much work you are willing to do. If you take apart the sets, clean them, verify all the original pieces are present, re-pack them into bags and the original boxes with original instructions, you can make significantly more than if you just take a picture of the bulk lot and say “what you see is what you get”.
Michelle, not a silly question at all. LEGO automatically chooses your region based on your shipping address, and while it is possible to change your region just to see what is available in other regions, once you start shopping, the region will change back to your own.

This a great article that I’m bookmarking. I suddenly wished I had gotten the Town Hall modular and found the current going price rather ghastly. I’m gonna have to use these suggestions to see if it’s more affordable to just part it together, even if it ends up in a different main color than the original. Thanks!

➡ LEGO JUNIORS SETS ON SALE: LEGO Juniors is also having a major clearance with nine sets on sale. These are smaller sets in the $10-$25 range, but they are full of interesting parts, colors, minifigs and printed parts. You can find them under the LEGO Juniors section or under Sales and Deals at the Online LEGO Shop.
Giving a child a book of building plans is akin to giving new life to the bricks you already have in your possession. Go one step further by containerizing a bunch of bricks the kids have forgotten about or sitting with them to organize their current collection.

The Millennium Falcon set comes in at the top of our list simply because it’s freaking  It is among the two or three most recognizable images from the entire Star Wars franchise, so it easily checks the nostalgia box.  The set is huge at 1329 pieces and takes a few hours to complete.  Inside the box you get the awesome Falcon itself, complete with the iconic holochess board, cockpit, and even spring loaded blasters.  Additionally, you get a wealth of minifigurines including Han Solo, Chewbacca, Rey, Finn, and BB-8 (you get two more, but who cares about those guys?).  The minor complaint here is that this is The Force Awakens version, so you get old Han, rather than A New Hope Han.  That’s easy enough to ignore, however, with the all-around spectacular set included here.
I have Lots of Galaxy Squad, Alien Conquest, and a few Ninjago sets, but my best ones are my Power Miner Sets. I have the Titanium Command Rig, the Underground Mining Base, Lavatraz, the Crystal King, and a few others. I mainly see these big ones (Command Rig and Underground Base) go for $200-$400 on Amazon and other places. I have them preconstructed with the instructions. However, I see them sold on Brian’s Toy’s for only $90-$100. Is that realistic? Please respond to this as I am BURIED in my sets and really want to sell them. Oh yeah, I also have the Indiana Jones Temple of Doom Set and the Lego MBA Level One Space Designer set. The Space Designer has all original pieces and content and the box, but it has been opened. Is that worth anything? Thanks, hope you can get back to me!
Have pieces but don’t know which kit it is from?  If you think they came from one household then chances are that you have lots of the pieces of that kit.  If so, then just go to this LEGO Building Instructions page, punch in some keywords and see what you can come up with.  Maybe you’re only missing a few pieces and it might be fun to build something this way.

If you recall, the September LEGO Store Calendar mentioned two exclusive sets that were slated for early VIP release from September 14 to 30. We now know that the first is the highly publicized UCS Millennium Falcon (75192), while the second is the LEGO Creator Expert Winter Village Station (10259). The latter is the fifth holiday-themed, D2C Creator Expert set to be released by LEGO, following the likes of the Winter Village Market (10235), Santa’s Workshop (10245), Winter Toy Shop (10249), and the Winter Holiday Train (10254). read more
This set contains 996 pieces, spread between 10 numbered bags and one unnumbered bag of base plates. The instructions are printed on three booklets, bound to a sheet of cardboard. No paperweights required. Also included is a sheet of stickers with brick patterns, as well as a sheet of malleable plastic with three flags.
Creator sets are made primarily out of general-use bricks and come with instructions for multiple builds. This is closer to how Lego was when I was a child, and it encourages kids to rebuild the structures either as the other designs or their own. The Creator sets, however, use more ingenious building techniques than what Lego offered decades ago. These are really marvels of miniature design. Set 31010 has many good bricks including plates, angled pieces (many in brown, a more useful color than you might think), and four windows.
Your child will have a renewed interest in the things he already owns and you won’t be adding more stuff to your household. Well, besides the book. But, they are available on Kindle, so you can save space that way, too.

Baseplates – Baseplates are large, flat pieces that are thinner than regular building plates. They are popular items. Baseplates are usually referred to by their dimensions in LEGO studs, e.g. “16×16”, “32×32”
LEGO Friends is of course not retiring as a theme as it is highly popular, however several of the individual sets are to give room to the new wave next year. The #3185 LEGO Friends Summer Riding Camp is a particularly nice set and it is listed for half price, and so is the #3186 LEGO Friends Emma’s Horse Trailer. You can’t go wrong with these sets as they are super sweet and have great resale value as well. You can fine them at the Retiring Soon section of the Online LEGO Shop.
I don’t know how they could have made this kit any more unappealing. I feel like they reused molds from other micro kits and just tried to get a minecrafty color scheme – they completely phoned this in!

I think you’d find that because of specilist parts that are in the UCS models, that as has been said before, require special molds, it wouldn’t be worth carrying on production. They need to modernise after all. So if something’s new then sacrifice something old for it surely ? 🙂

It’s really lucky the Empire had a spare Death Star hanging around. Who would have thought a tiny exhaust port could be so much trouble! Save yourself the heartache of watching the first one blow up by building the Death Star II. If you hurry you could even build the 3,417 piece set before it’s destroyed in the Battle of Endor. This rare set was only around for two years, and the price tag reflects the short run. If you want it in your collection, you’ll spend over $2,000.
Why is it a better deal?  Because buying used LEGOs is quite predictable in the sense is that is kind of disappointing.  I don’t really find “deals.”  Sure they are cheaper than buying new LEGOs but it’s not really comparable because you would never buy a mish-mosh of new LEGOs from various sets, right?  What would happen if you get a whole bunch of “special pieces”? Your child may not be familiar with that set/theme and thus may not know what to do with some of those pieces.  Those are usually the big klunky pieces that just take up Find out what they are and use it or give it away.
Pantenkind, I do not think that the UCS would be anywhere near as popular right now if it HADN’T been discontinued. Part of it’s appeal now is that you cant just go and buy it and that the longer you leave it the more expensive it may get.
You can search online for replacement guides for the most expensive sets, and you’re always going to find great tips. For example, most of the internal parts of the Millennium Falcon were some technic yellow parts, that were also created for other much common sets at the time. But now, those sets are scarce, so those yellow pieces (that you’ll never see) are pricey as hell. You can replace them by the same piece, but in another color, and you’ll save literally 150 dollars, in only 16 pieces.
Nice post, I have every released Lego Aquaraiders except one hard to find item now worth upwards of $100, and will probably sell them individually in about 10 years after picking up a couple missing pieces on PAB. I also plan to do the same with my Indiana Jones sets (of which I have 4/5 of all of the released sets) but my SW & Ninjago sets are keepers.

As much I’d like those three there are several other Direct To Consumer (D2C) sets that are higher on my list, therefore all three of them are a pass. If I was to chose one it would be 75059 – Sandcrawler.
This detailed LEGO® brick recreation of the ship featured in Star Wars: Attack of the Clones includes an opening minifigure cockpit, space for the R4-P17 Astromech droid top section and 2 stud shooters, while the large hyperdrive features 2 spring-loaded shooters, big engines, and a grab handle for enhanced play and quick release of the docked model. This impressive set also includes 3 minifigures and an Astromech droid figure.
If the sets have been used (pre-built) I would try Craigslist first to see if there is a local buyer. If you luck out you will have an end-buyer who just genuinely wants the sets you have for themselves and they are willing to pay a bit more for used sets, or you can sell them to a reseller for a bulk price. If you want top dollar you can list on eBay, but it will take up a lot of your time.
I’ve got to be honest with you: the first time I saw the concept of a U-Wing I hated it. It was probably 5 to 6 months before Rogue One was released, and I felt Lucasfilms was really stretching the “Letter-Wing ship” concept.

Also, when it is a line of products people who got into the game late will want to purchase the earlier models. If you just found out about Fire Brigade and Emporium, you looked into it and found out about Cafe Corner being an earlier set in the line, you’d might really want to get one.
For Lego collectors seeking the best and most expensive Lego sets, this set is one to get your hands on. One customer wrote, “This is my favorite so far. It was great seeing this fully [built] and sitting majestically on the cabinet. My friend suggested it may need some lights. Next time I put it together I may try adding a few light bricks inside so there will be a bit of a glow from it.” He may be referencing the fact that the Taj Mahal takes on different hues according to the time of the day; a pinkish color in the morning, a milk white in the evening, and a golden color at night.
This is a set to be coveted and one customer wrote, “The construction itself was not difficult (I am an adult), and the pieces in it are amazing. The jester heads and gold pieces alone make this set really fun. Add the power functions (this was my first power function set) and the music and it is unbelievable! The set is built so that when you turn on the motor and the carousel spins, the music will start by itself.”

Design: This set uses a modular design. If you follow the instructions, you get eight distinct modules, four above ground and four below ground. You can arrange these in dozens of different ways to create tiny cave networks and a multi-layered effect. The caves have several different kinds of hidden resources that you can only see when you take the top layer off. The overall effect of the design is a pretty good representation of the Minecraft world.
I asked, and your response led to me buying it yesterday! I am currently about to start on the second half and could not be happier with the detail and techniques found throughout the first half of the build, I am excited to finish it later today.
Put the pieces in a laundry bag or pillowcase. A fine mesh clothes bag will prevent the bricks from jamming the machine, and minimize damage to the bricks from tumbling, although scratching is still possible. You may use a pillowcase if you do not have a laundry bag, but make sure to close it tightly with a zipper or a rubber band.[4]

Take lots of good photos. Spread your LEGO pieces out on the floor or on a tabletop and take a picture of the whole lot. If you have sorted out minifigures or other pieces, take close-up photos of them. Take overlapping close-up photos of the spread-out lot. Some things to avoid in your photos are:
Finally, when it comes to minifigures, look them up both completely assembled as well as in parts. Often a very rare minifigure that may go for $20 assembled can be bought for less than half that price in parts. I typically create a second Wanted List for this very purpose to make searching easier. Also, some LEGO fans who piece together sets don’t even care about the minifigs. For example if you are setting up a street with multiples of the same LEGO Modular Building, you may only need one set of the minifigures.
I’m glad I got a copy of the pet shop before it retired. It’s so versatile even if you only have one copy of the set. I furnished the Brownstone house and expanded the apartment up top to have a twin minifigure bed and a bathroom with shower. Sadly you can’t modify the interior’s of the new modulars as easily without taking away original elements. I guess the top floor of the Parisian Restaurant can qualify as I turned it into a second apartment.
“Retiring Soon” means nothing, some sets get the label and are sold out a week later, a set like Medieval Market gets the label and it was still available for like 6+ months. “Retired” is really the tag to look for but that doesnt show up until a set is almost completely sold everywhere so by time you see the label its worthless. Im sure LEGO does mess with buyers/investors to encourage them to buy a set they were on the fence about or were waiting for a sweet sale but instead rush out and buy it at full MSRP. Its all a big game with constantly changing rules, Investors either give up and get out, get burnt and loose money or you keep up with the changing market and actually make a profit.
I was sorting through our stash this month and I was greatly disappointed in seeing how only a small minority of them are actual bricks. (Our stash weighs approximately 20 lbs!)  Really, it’s embarrassing and moreover, it’s frustrating because I have two kids at home, one who is quite LEGO proficient and the other is not so proficient.
This item may have minor scuff marks on it, but still looks very good. WARNING – LEGO pieces are intended and rated for children 5 years and up. Be advised that LEGO parts should not be swallowed as it can present a choking hazard.
Another weird thing I noticed was that this set was never in stock in the 3 Lego stores in my area. I checked over a period of several weeks and never saw it once, even after the Rogue 1 sets came out. I ended up purchasing it via shop @ home.
Released in this year, the Super Star Destroyer is a classic Star Wars Ultimate Collector’s Series set that boasts a whopping 3152 pieces! It includes a redesigned IG-88 and Dengar and a new minifigure, Admiral Piett, along with a Darth Vader minifigure. Weighing in at 8 pounds, this set will definitely be a gem in your LEGO Star Wars collection…but it will cost you, as it’s selling for $500 and up!
There are a lot of reasons that LEGO might stop producing a set, and I would assume it’s a balance between the cost of doing production runs of the necessary pieces, the projected volume of sales, and their availability of SKUs.
They even manage to maintain some minor level of screen accuracy (to reason of course). Many recall the scene from Star Wars (Ep. IV 1977) where Luke, Chewy and Han spring Leia from her prison cell aboard the Death Star then flee into the garbage chute, only to face the Dianoga and imminently collapsing walls of the compactor. You can recreate this scene exactly. And I recently discovered you can even throw the minifigures into the garbage chute and they will land in the garbage compactor. There is also a lever that then allows you to collapse the walls. There are even little bits of garbage and the dreaded Dianoga included.

When I go to the US retiring page, all I get are bionicle sets and stuff, none of the items listed here. Then I click on the link in this article to the UK retiring page and these sets are listed there. What is going on? Is this why I never learned the Town Hall was retiring a couple years ago?
