“As with any sort of collectible, the safe storage of the collectible is very important,” Ed Mack explains in a piece on How to make money from Lego . “Although the actual Lego brick is pretty much indestructible under normal conditions, the Lego boxes and instructions need special care.”

Also known as Dark Shark II or Black Skull, this Lego set is pretty detailed as the aftcastle can be accessed by opening its sidewalls as well as detaching a piece of the poop deck. You can also move the rudder by turning the steering wheel! One customer wrote, “…there is no set that can beat the Skull’s Eye Schooner.” This set is definitely in the running to be one of the best Lego sets because it has a plethora of cool features such as a compass next to the steering wheel and an odd postbox where you can find a glass and a gun.

The newest LEGO Modular Buildings – the #10232 LEGO Creator Palace Cinema, and the #10243 LEGO Creator Parisian Restaurant – are shown as available. I just finished building the #10243 LEGO Creator Parisian Restaurant, and I will say this; if you only buy one LEGO Modular set, get this one. I enjoyed every step of the building process and the final model is just so lovely. Building adult-oriented sets is so different from building regular LEGO sets; they are so much denser, there is so much more detail, and the techniques used are so interesting. I don’t know how many times I said to myself during building “Wow! It’s so cool how they did that!”
The LEGO Ninjago’s 70751 Temple of Airjitzu set is a highly detailed temple building with many surprises and features. It includes many delightful architectural features like Oriental–style decorated windows and sliding doors. The intricate wooden-frame-style walls of the nearby Blacksmiths. As… Continue Reading →
As a 24 year old, I spent the entire weekend putting this thing together. Once completed, after my thumbs have become sore from pushing in all the small pieces, I successfully picked up my cell phone and drove it across the apartment. I’ll tell you what, I’ve never had so much fun putting something together and then playing with it, except for that one time I created a work of art from sacrificial animal entrails. Anyways, happy building!
For those wondering, the admin is still okay. Unfortunately the utility workers in charge of restoring power have just been surveying up to this point. Hopefully they’ll start actually fixing things soon.
Lego’s Technic line is a series we haven’t mentioned in this list up to now, but it’s worth taking note of if you’re seriously into pneumatics and building what amount to movable puzzles. In addition to the standard Lego pieces that you expect from the block company, their Technic line—originally called Technical sets when it was created in 1977 before being renamed in 1984—utilizes a series of interconnecting plastic rods and parts to build vehicles and other movable machines that are really fun—and challenging—to create. If you’ve ever used a Mindstorms Robotic series, you’ll know what the Technic line is similar to, without the additional programming involved in robotics. This Mercedes-Benz Arocs set is one of the coolest kits we’ve ever seen: it features modular cylinders, valves, gears, and pumps, along with an engine and a power box to power the on-board crane that can reach up to 57cm in the air. Seriously, this thing is cool—and at $245, it isn’t cheap either. But the entire kit includes over 2,700 pieces, making it one of the largest and highest-detailed kids on our list. If you’re looking for something to experiment with, this Mercedes-Benz set will keep you challenged for weeks as you assemble and build a movable pneumatic structure.

Whether you have a child or are an adult enthusiast and collector, LEGO makes many sets and toys for all levels of builders. LEGO sets range in size from a handful of pieces to kits numbering in the thousands of blocks. LEGO toys cover a range of types, from buildings to ships to vehicles.
YES!!! they are amazing to build, the detail is great, and the ones that are out now are pretty cool. I have the cinema, pet shop, and emporium, but I would say the pet shop was the most fun. I am planning on getting the restaurant and the detective agency next spring, but I also know a couple shops that sell old sets, so if they are not outrageous, I will pick up the town hall and fire brigade (really bummed that I missed out on this one. 2 weeks after I bought the 3 I have, they retired it).

Not to hijack the thread or anything, but Im wondering what everyone’s opinion is on putting these sets together piece by piece on bricklink. I’ve found that usually some of the more rare sets can be put together this way (if you dont care about the minifigs) at a reasonable cost. What do you think are the pros and cons of doing it this way?
As a Lego Factory set, Market Street was to showcase a fan design, thus promoting the Design-it-yourself vision of Lego Factory. The modularity of the resulting model also may inspire people to design their own floor modules (or furniture sets) in Factory, without having to build an entire house.[3]
Since its introduction, different subthemes under the City banner were used to tie together related sets, such as Police, Coast Guard, Emergency, Airport, Road Rescue, Trains, Fire, and Harbor. During the Christmas season, a City-themed Advent Calendar set is sold through the online Lego Shop and at retailers.
I agree, the date for Fire Brigade just doesn’t seem right. If it were following the trend of the previous sets in this theme it would discontinue around December this year. I would also think the Grand Emporium would discontinue in December 2012 instead of 2013 while the date for the Pet Shop seems correct.
Personally I don’t care for the Emporium. It is big, and looks fine on the outside, but it is too empty inside. The more recent modulars are a lot more interesting. Plus, the Emporium is a corner building, so unless you get at least one other one with it, it wouldn’t look right. If you can only get one modular, get the Parisian. It is a very sweet set both inside and out, looks good from three sides, and is perfectly fine as a display piece all by itself. And you will have several more years to buy it. 😉

Not having everything available any time for a reasonable price is what makes collecting fun. Whats a collection if not some of the pieces gain worth over time? Do you really want a world, where theres no way that any set in your collection will grow to a rare item?
Green Grocer (set number: 10185) was the third of the Modular Buildings series. It was originally released in 2008 at a MSRP of US$149/£99.[12] The set contains 2352 pieces and is recommended for builders 16 years of age or older. Some of the set features include a blue and white awning, opening doors and windows, detailed interiors to each room, a roof terrace, a fire escape, access to a courtyard behind the building, and 4 minifigures.[13] Advanced building techniques used in Green Grocer include using black skeleton legs and hammers to make railings, using black spear guns as railings for the fire escape, using a paddle for a pendulum in a grandfather clock, and using hinges to make a bay window.[14]
3. There are bags and books marked 1 and 2. The missing pieces are in stage 1, the engine and garage. While waiting for the missing pieces, we went ahead and assembled stage 2, the second floor dormitory and the roof.

This Lego set is not only one of the top runners as far as expense is concerned, but it is also one of the best and well-sought Lego sets because it’s so symbolic of what everyone wants – freedom. Adult Lego collectors want the freedom to relish in their love of crafting, and building things, they believe, represents their values – the adult-level appreciation of things such as freedom, as well as the childhood wonderment of creating something from nothing that’s so spectacular and momentous.
LEGO 10224 Town Hall is the largest modular building, with a whopping 2766 pieces. It had an unusually short lifespan for a modular, as it was released in March 2012 and became unavailable in late 2014, and was officially labelled as a Retired Product by LEGO in early 2015. The size of this unique set and its short life caused its post-retirement value to skyrocket very quickly.

This will be one of my favorites. I was unable to get this item from LEGO directly and I was very disappointed. I was looking for something else on Amazon and decided to look for the Mobile Crane on a whim. There it was and the price was not much above the original LEGO price <$20.00. Perfect. I has great engineering - the gear work is a marvel. I also enjoy the second item - the Reach Stacker - a lot of fun to build. 1 Lego compatible SBRICK Receiver for Power Functions. 4 Outputs to connect Power Functions motors and lights (Lego receiver has only 2). Power Functions cable and Battery Box are needed to connect the S BRICK (available at ile9os). People also like to break up sets to sell the pieces individually on eBay, as they may make more money that way. The mini-figures are the most-valuable, some going for $40 each, even used! You might score a Harry Potter set for a (relative) song without any mini-figures, but your child might not be overjoyed, as the play value seems to depend on having the right beloved characters. I think the church would be to controversial due to the nature of religious groups feeling they may not be represented in a set, so I would assume they would not make a church building unless there were one for all of the major religions. also i think a museum would be a cool addition. Let's buy that one… This set marks the 10th Anniversary of the Modular building sets containing numerous "easter egg" references in use of brick elements, colors and architectural details to every Modular set released over the previous years. I think that the Mini Cooper 10242 maybey also not a redesigned box is. This is a box from 2014, but not the end of 2015 redisigned box. They has aslo no last updated box. Is this means, that possibly the Camper Van has still time to go, with a new redisigned box, and the Mini Cooper 10242 next year will be sold out first? Like first the 10234 Sydney Opera House going first quickly sold out and not the 10214 Tower Bridge. And the new 10253 Big Ben Creator Expert for 2016, confirm that one of the 10214 or 10234 is sold out soon, whit the 10234 first, because they has no new redisigned box. You specifically excluded price to piece ratio from your assessment of them being overpriced, but to me, that's far and away the most pertinent measure. Factors not intrinsic to the bricks, such as third party licensing and packaging (Architecture series) would constitute examples where sets become overpriced relative to sets without those features. Intrinsically, I could understand the argument that the increased specialization of parts translates to a higher overall price to piece ratio, as well. But I just don't follow the logic that a change in scale which necessitates more parts is equivalent to overpricing. The #10232 LEGO Creator Palace Cinema, the 8th in the LEGO Modular Buildings line, has been around since 2013, and it looks like LEGO felt it was time for it to retire. If you haven’t gotten the set yet, but would like to add it to your collection, I highly recommend you get it right away, as it will be retiring soon. Below is the message LEGO recently shared on their Facebook page, as well as a bit more info about the set. 🙂 Market Street has some interesting build techniques and I like the color scheme, but on the whole, it isn't up to snuff with the rest of the line. The roof looks unfinished, and the bizarre looking single story side market just doesn't fit in with the row of modulars at all. The final nail in the coffin is that it had an even shorter production run than it's counterparts, so it's aftermarket price is further out of proportion. What may make more of a difference is what type of building you prefer. Ever since TH, I think that the line has drifted away from making massive buildings and focused more on details/interior. A lot of people like this, but I am not one of them. The three I own (FB, GE, PS) are my three favourite, while the most recent three (PC, and the Detective Office) are among my least favourite. Market Street (set number: 10190) was the second of the Modular Buildings series and designed by Dutch Lego fan Eric Brok.[5] It was originally released as a follow-up to Café Corner in 2007 and priced at MSRP of US$89.[6] The set contains 1236 pieces and is recommended for builders 10 years of age or older. It was one of the first leading buildings. The set features include opening doors and windows, a gate, a striped awning, and 3 minifigures.[7] Advanced construction techniques used in Market Street include: curved staircases, "stripped paint" sections on the walls, interchangeable floors,[8] Dutch/Belgian stepped roof,[3] a basement, offset windows, and wrought iron-look decoration and gate.[9] One way to find value for money on eBay is to buy loose lots of bulk Lego. Zoom in on the photos on eBay to see if there are any pieces/sets/figures you can recognize, and be prepared to bid $10 a pound (or more) for the lot. (Non-Harry Potter Lego tends to go for around $5 a pound.) Sometimes, you might notice most of a set or several great figures amid a sea of random Legos. The question is, whether your child would want the bulk parts to build things from their imagination or only be interested in the exact sets with instructions. If you were so inclined, you could buy the large lots, remove the parts/mini-figure you really wanted and resell the rest on eBay. That’s rather time-consuming. (Although to be fair, searching eBay and the internet at large for discontinued Harry Potter Lego sets is a time-consuming process, if you want to find value for money.) “lego minifigures home -lego stock price”

Nothing in life is easy or free, as ive said before the days of buying literally any starwars LEGO set and making 300-400% ROI in one year are long gone. There is still money to be made but its a much more complicated game now, to think that LEGO would hand you a profitable investment on a silver platter by labeling everything with “retiring soon” so you can go out at the last minute buy a bunch and flip them for loads of quick profit is crazy.
Duel on Naboo (75169): Recreate the famous battle scene from The Phantom Menance.  Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, and Darth Maul are all here to do battle on a small power generator from the Naboo fight. Frequently on Sale
Two last two sets retiring soon are the #10218 LEGO Creator Pet Shop and the #10234 LEGO Creator Sydney Opera House. The LEGO Creator Pet Shop has been the longest standing LEGO Modular Buildings, first released back in 2011. It is the only building in the series that has a split footprint, making it extremely versatile. Even if you already have one, I would recommend getting another, just in case you ever need it in your layout. Half of the building is a generic apartment, while the pet shop side can easily be converted into other stores to create more variety. And the LEGO Creator Sydney Opera House is a beautiful and accurate display piece. You can find both sets under the LEGO Creator section of the Online LEGO Shop.
Brickwizard is a program that works off of Brickstore and it can help do all the leg work in trying to find the best prices on bricklink. The only downside is that it is not as flexible when and if you want to make substitutions.
In order to hold the pieces I pull for the project, I typically use a sturdy zip-lock style bag. I actually found the two gallon variety works amazingly well for large sets. As I go through the list, I’m either clicking the delete box when I have all the pieces or I’m moving the quantity I still need into the comment box from the minimum quantity wanted. The reason for this move has to do with how BrickLink functions. If you keep the amount only in the minimum quantity wanted box, it only shows that element if that quantity is reached in a particular store. So even if the store has some of the pieces you need, it will not show up if you have the minimum quantity box filled with a higher number. Unlike the minimum quantity box, the comment box is only a brief note. So no matter how many pieces a store has, their inventory will show up in your search results. And the nice thing is that your note will also show right under where you would indicate how much of each piece you want.
LEGO Friends is of course not retiring as a theme as it is highly popular, however several of the individual sets are to give room to the new wave next year. The #3185 LEGO Friends Summer Riding Camp is a particularly nice set and it is listed for half price, and so is the #3186 LEGO Friends Emma’s Horse Trailer. You can’t go wrong with these sets as they are super sweet and have great resale value as well. You can fine them at the Retiring Soon section of the Online LEGO Shop.
This Lego set is not only one of the top runners as far as expense is concerned, but it is also one of the best and well-sought Lego sets because it’s so symbolic of what everyone wants freedom. Adult Lego collectors want the freedom to relish in their love of crafting, and building things, they believe, represents their values – the adult-level appreciation of things such as freedom, as well as the childhood wonderment of creating something from nothing that’s so spectacular and momentous.

Product Name : Star Wars Star Destroyer 10221. Grab your hands on this rare Star Wars Super Star Destroyer Set. This custom set was inspired by Lego’s Original 10221 Collectors set. This kit is not typically meant for children under 16 due to its complexity.
The drum tower to the side of the gate house has a catapult on top. Unlike previous catapults, this one is fixed facing forward. It also contains a spring, a soft pole that is deformed when the catapult is pressed down. It is much easier to operate than the standard swivel catapults included in previous sets, especially since you don’t risk breaking the structure when firing.
The design uses a fair amount of interlocking within each tower and wall section, allowing them to stand up to play fairly well. The sections fit together with each other in a modular way. With a throne room, treasure room, prison, two catapults, arbalest, postern gate, and a working drawbridge and portcullis in the main gate, there is tremendous play value in the castle. However, don’t try to pick up the castle as a whole to move it, as that will cause it to come apart around the joints between the sections. Slide it onto something flat and solid instead.
Decide how much you are willing to spend on each lot.  If the lot includes minifigs, estimate the figures at $1 each (general minifigs resell for approximately $3).  If the lot includes castle minifigs or Star Wars minifigs, figure the price higher.  Calculate the rest of the Legos at about $8 to $10 per pound.  If it includes Star Wars or Castle specialty pieces, the price will be higher.  Just look at other auctions that are about to end and you’ll see what the going price is.

Jabba’s Palace is the first Lego set I have purchased/used since I was a kid. I bought this for my 6 year old daughter because she loves all things Star Wars now. I was very impressed with all of the new engineered style pieces this set included. The engineering they must put it to these new sets is amazing. The play set can open/close by folding it in half. This is accomplished by an a few simple Lego pieces allowing for a hinge. This play set even has to portions that perform a sliding effect. One of the sliding effects is used to open the trap door in front of Jabba’s platform, like in the Return of the Jedi movie. The other sliding portion will push the Jabba platform forward. I was very impressed with the way these worked and enjoyed building them with my daughter.
If, like me, you were at elementary/primary school when you first saw Star Wars then there’s a very good possibility that, also like me and my peers, you grew up playing with LEGO. My bedroom floor was literally carpeted with LEGOs, and I built makeshift dioramas out of it so that I could create some of my favorite moments from the film(s) with my Star Wars action figures from Kenner/Palitoy.
I think you’d find that because of specilist parts that are in the UCS models, that as has been said before, require special molds, it wouldn’t be worth carrying on production. They need to modernise after all. So if something’s new then sacrifice something old for it surely ? 🙂
My 6YO loves Lego. We were buying small sets, but my husband found that he could buy a box of random parts on Ebay for much cheaper. He bought a set that had…I forget, but I think 1000 pieces, for $50 this fall. I’ll check with him, but I think it was that, or maybe 500 pieces. It seemed like a good deal. It’s very random, but my son loved it. That’s my only tip so far. I’ve looked on Craigslist, but with no luck. I’ve never seen them at thrift stores, but I’ll keep my eyes open for them. Thanks.
Conclusion: If you can get it for MSRP of $34.99, it’s a buy. I wouldn’t suggest paying collectible prices, as LEGO will undoubtedly be producing more of these, and will probably create different Minecraft sets in the near future. At least I hope they do. I would love to add more modules to this set, and I’ll be interested to see tiny zombies, skeletons, and mob animals.
Sometimes you may run into the issue with a piece that is just not convenient to get. Or it is possible that facing $3 per piece is bit hard to swallow. Thankfully there are a number of work-around solutions to problems like these. The first is finding if there is a part with a Matching ID (MID). If you go to the parts inventory of the set on BrickLink, parts with a MID have a mark in a column to the far right. This means that if you go to the very bottom of the inventory you can find parts that are slightly different (like they have hollow studs instead of filled or they have a few extra notches), but essentially they will look and act identical.
➡ LEGO SALES & DEALS: The LEGO Sales & Deals section of the Online LEGO Shop has a lot of the LEGO video games on sale. This includes LEGO Marvel Super Heroes, The LEGO Movie, LEGO The Hobbit, and LEGO Legends of Chima games. Other than these the only things listed right now are a few magnets, and miscellaneous gear. However this section is going to be very busy as we get closer to the end of the year, especially right after Christmas. So make sure you check it regularly. Here is the direct link (and the same link is also available in the right-hand side-bar at all times for your convenience): LEGO Sales & Deals at the Online LEGO Shop
Yes, I know that sounds silly. Many Lego maniacs will sniff you out. But, lots of kids don’t really care where the Lego come from. Mine certainly didn’t. They were thrilled with this random bag my mom picked up at a garage sale for a few bucks.

Two Lego Mindstorms sets have been released before 2002. The first set featured R2-D2 which can also be converted into a Battle Droid on a STAP and a Treadwell droid. It is called the Droid Developer Kit and was Released in 1999, numbered 9748, and contains 657 pieces. The second set was an AT-AT which can also be converted into a Destroyer Droid and Droid (walking mode). It is called Dark Side Developer Kit and was released later in 2000, numbered 9754, and it contains 578 pieces.
They don’t always discontinue them– the best example I can think of is probably the Star Destroyer, which was around longer than LEGO initially expected, thanks to excellent sales. They offered it in catalogs from at least 2002 to 2007 (6 years). If they offered the UCS MF that long, it would be in catalogs until at least 2012!

We have ZERO items in Sales & Deals here in the UK. The USA & Canada both have 37 sale items in Lego online shop. I’ve got to be honest with you: the first time I saw the concept of a U-Wing I hated it. It was probably 5 to 6 months before Rogue One was released, and I felt Lucasfilms was really stretching the “Letter-Wing ship” concept.
They just don’t know where to look, you’ll be able to get a Slave I at least until the end of 2016. The only big ones that retired at the end of last year were 76023 The Tumbler, 10240 Red Five X-Wing, and 10188 Death Star.

Released in this year, the Super Star Destroyer is a classic Star Wars Ultimate Collector’s Series set that boasts a whopping 3152 pieces! It includes a redesigned IG-88 and Dengar and a new minifigure, Admiral Piett, along with a Darth Vader minifigure. Weighing in at 8 pounds, this set will definitely be a gem in your LEGO Star Wars collection…but it will cost you, as it’s selling for $500 and up!
I also buy bulk sales from eBay, that offer local collection to keep costs low, and are usually an attic clearance etc. I sell any sets I can make from these, which helps pay for the new ones. Often these sets have parts missing, which I replace during my parts orders, again helping me keep postage costs down. I then sort out any parts that I need, and the remainder get sold on brickowl.

The set is sturdy enough for the kids to play with, they loved that the stories of the building are removable and basically turn into their own ‘set’ to play with. The details inside the fire-station are great.
You also get the Coast Guard cutter, which is really well designed- the roof flips up to access the bridge, with control stations fore and aft. There are buoys/fenders on each side of the ship, a rotating (manually) radar antenna (the bar type usually seen on ships), a working hoist aft, and a helo pad on the forecastle (that’s the raised deck on the front of the ship). There’s a minisub/ROV with twin props, which clips onto the hoist. There’s a helo with a winch and anchor and floats instead of skids, which sits on the helo pad. There’s a speedboat with a nicely rendered outboard motor and it’s own radar (the round kind on small boats). And there’s a lighthouse with a bunch of jagged rocks. It was a fun kit to build and there’s a lot of potential for creating adventures. To top it all off, the cutter and speedboat float because- why not? Yeah, Lego just figured the boats should float. Awesome.

I thinking of getting the palace cinema, but, I already have the town plan set that came with a cinema in it and it works fine with what I have. I to am hoping that LEGO would drop there prices on sets alittle( or a lot) and that the sale drop would give them enough of a warning to scale back a little. Hang in there Admin, and yes it would be great for you to get away for A while . Be safe and my thoughts are with you.
Once the scene is set up, all your player has to do is dodge the robot penguins and grab the diamond! The set includes exclusive Scuba Batman and The Penguin minifigures with weapons and assorted accessories; including a harpoon, umbrella, and dynamite.
On a separate note, I was checking Bricklink for prices on the retired sets, and noticed the Pet Shop is up now, with two of the sellers being in USA. I guess that means its starting to hit the shelves and times running out!!
Lego is the best game to get for your kids and even you might enjoy it to. The quality surpasses many other games for kids, this one won’t break so fast (my other sets lasted me for many years). I also find it to be healthy for their brains because it teaches them to follow instructions and see what they can accomplish with patience.

Odd distribution of blocks. I can see including even numbers of particular blocks, since it at least allows you to achieve some sort of symmetry to satisfy your OCD (like me) but this kit shipped with odd numbers of blocks so I found myself switching colors because i could not complete a certain part of the case due to running out of the required color of blocks.

Lego City is a theme under which Lego building sets are released. As the name suggests, Lego City sets are based on city life, with the models depicting city and emergency services (such as police and fire), airport, train, construction, and civilian services.
Lego Designer Jamie Berard created many Modulars Buildings and decided to make a mini version of his set for fun.[18] Five of these were then released as a single set 10230 containing 1356 pieces, each one on an 8×8 baseplate, making them quarter-scale with respect to the original buildings. Initially this set was for Lego Group VIPs only, but it later became available for general sale.

There are tricks to filling the cup so that you maximize your purchase. For instance, fill the little rim at the bottom with tiny pieces, then add your large, expensive pieces, then add smaller and smaller pieces. Top off the cup with the itty-bitty pieces that shake down into the crevices.
Also, even if LEGO would allow international shipping, shipping fees would negate any savings you would get on a sale. International shipping fees can be enormous. Especially on sealed sets. I’m a BrickLink and eBay seller and after the most recent rate increases I simply had to stop selling internationally, as the fees are so crazy.
One way to find value for money on eBay is to buy loose lots of bulk Lego. (Although to be fair, searching eBay and the internet at large for discontinued Harry Potter Lego sets is a time-consuming process, if you want to find value for money.)
You will also find periodic sales or loyalty points at your neighborhood retail store and money spent there saves you time and you invest in your local economy! There is also the LEGO store/LEGO.com and you’ll probably find some deals at Amazon, Target, and Walmart.  (Please note, I’ve seen Amazon listing prices above MSRP too).   LEGO.com will show you actual MSRP. When things become retired, it might be much cheaper or much more expensive. Also, you might save by doing Store Pick-Up as sometimes the online prices are lower at some retail stores!
Now I know I said the project can move forward, however I like to do one more step just so there are no unpleasant surprises. This step involves taking a look at the parts in a set. For this I use the BrickLink. I click Catalog at the BrickLink website and then find the set by either browsing the categories or entering the set number in the search box. Once I find its page, I click on the View Inventory link. Seeing all the parts in the set laid out on one page lets me look for expensive and/or unusual elements. There are no prices immediately listed on this page and I doubt anyone wants to click through and see prices for each part, but I look for three main criteria: rare part design, rare part color, and large quantity.
Yeah, I really didn’t have a good head for Katniss. (Deep breath.) I had to use Wyldstyle’s, (facepalm), the MMV female head didn’t look quite right. Maybe that would have been better. For Peeta, I’m not sure if I should choose Luke Skywalker’s, (the original Luke Skywalker head,) or that Determined face from the Hoth Rebel Trooper Battle Pack that came out whatever many years ago. (The one on one of the troopers.) Haymith was Indiana Jones face and Thors hair, but in the darker tan. Effie was Elsa Schneider, with the Lone Ranger fancy gal red hair piece. And Snow was the original trilogy Obi-wan head, with Balin’s hair. And I went into too much detail…
If we’re going to talk about a collection of X-Wings, there isn’t any other set better that this one. The Red Five, Luke Skywalkers’ call sign during the Battle of Yavin (given to him due to the fact that the “old” Red Five dies during the Battle of Scarif in Rogue One). This ship is a thing of beauty.
Hopefully this overview will get you organized enough to start on that dream LEGO set you never thought would be possible to get. It can be a long road to see the fruits of your work, but when all is done you have the added accomplishment of knowing how much work went into the project. To date I’ve assembled two LEGO Modular Buildings I missed out on when they were originally released, and I’m currently working on a third. I’ve also completed a handful of old LEGO Castle sets.
The Town Hall is a very sweet set. I really like the colors. I fully furnished and customized mine on the inside, so it is fun from that perspective too. If I remember correctly all of the parts are pretty standard. However if you consider parting it together it is probably better doing it earlier than later as more want to do the same.
Similar to Ebates, I use Upromise.com to get a bit of a price discount. If you can’t find a sale, I’ve used lego.com via Upromise and found that a) they have really excellent customer service and b) you can build up “lego points” to get a discount on a future purchase.

LEGO is doing some pretty major summer clearance right now at the Online LEGO Shop, including some very nice medium to large sets that are getting retired. Below I will highlight some of the most noteworthy ones, and you can out the rest at the Sales & Deals section of the Online LEGO Shop. Please note that once stock is out on retiring soon sets, LEGO won’t be making any more, so make sure you don’t miss out. 🙂
Women aged 32 and 53 were killed, while two other women were uninjured but suffering shock and led from the scene – one of those is pregnant. The shots were fired at a house in the suburb of St Leonards, Hastings
I’ve always been in 2 minds about the Sydney opera house, it just seems so expensive compared to Tower bridge and especially Big Ben both of which I have, they both have many more pieces for less money. I managed to get Doctor Who for £35 on amazon, I got Big Bang theory with VIP points, own ewok village and Wall-E. That leaves the sandcrawler which has never been a must buy like ewok village was.
Yeah, it is a good idea to keep a balance. Some sets/themes are worth letting go, other’s are worth to keep. I know many people who greatly regret selling their collection, others are afraid to sell them and are burried under boxes they never even opened. For me the judgement to sell anything (LEGO or otherwise) is that if I haven’t touched it/used it for 6 months, it is time to let it go and have someone else enjoy it. This also opens up space (and money) for new things in my life. So it’s a win-win. 😉

While the Imperial Star Destroyer includes a to-scale Tantive IV for those with a burning desire to recreate the opening scenes of A New Hope, purists will likely fancy this much-larger version of the Rebel’s Corellian vessel as well. Leia’s Corvette model ship is incredibly rare and can also lay claim to introducing a new ‘dark red’ brick into the Lego tool-kit.
I think most kids will stick with the tree house design as it has the most going on. Play-wise, this set works well with a wide range of Lego’s other themes. It is mini-figure size, unlike some of the other Creator sets. The set makes a great gift because if the child does not like it, they have the ability to make a wide range of other structures. At the very least, it is a good collection of very useful bricks.
Legos are a nostalgic part of everyone s childhood, yet they are still very relevant. New sets of Legos based on popular film, television, and even video game franchises are being released at a steady…
Let’s be honest; Legos can be expensive.  The inner Star Wars fanatic might really want to buy that 4,000 piece Death Star, but that’s simply not for everybody.  It certainly isn’t practical if you need to find something for your niece or nephew’s birthday present.  We’re here to help.  Below is a list of the cheaper Lego Star Wars sets that we love, with a brief summary of why we love them.  We limited this list to setes with an MSRP under $25.
Great article!  I LOVE all these Star Wars Lego sets.  (Small correction:  #2 on your list is 6211 Imperial Star Destroyer, but the image is of the even more awesome 10030 Imperial Star Destroyer with 3096 pieces).  Also, for me personally, I’d replace #12 AT-AT Walker with the 10178 Motorized AT-AT that walks around my kitchen and bumps into things.  🙂

“As with any sort of collectible, the safe storage of the collectible is very important,” Ed Mack explains in a piece on How to make money from Lego . “Although the actual Lego brick is pretty much indestructible under normal conditions, the Lego boxes and instructions need special care.”
Hm… yeah, for large sets like this it is a good idea to keep the boxes, but it is not necessary. If you bought the set for yourself and have no intention of selling it, there is no reason to keep the box (unless you really like it and want to keep it). If you do plan to sell it, it doesn’t make a huge difference in the resale price of a used set to have or not have the box. Most people will throw it away anyway.
I disappeared into the Harry Potter Lego Internet rabbit hole and here are a few of the places I’ve found to buy discontinued Harry Potter Lego sets, or even used Lego pieces — all without breaking the bank.

LEGO POWER FUNCTIONS PRO SET. 1 Lego Receiver(IR – Infrared). 1 Lego Remote Control. 2 Lego Medium Motors. 1 Lego Battery Box(Uses 6 AA Batteries – Not included). 2 Axle Connectors. Condition: All parts are NEW.
-Some people say it is flimsy, but this product leans a little bit more towards “collectors item” and less towards “toy,” so that’s to be expected.. It’s fine rolling back and forth, but this isn’t really meant to be played with a ton.
This small set is a lot of fun. I was surprised to see how much power pulling back on the car really builds up- plenty to go up a ramp or even make it jump across something. The car is a solid build, nothing falling off easily even if hitting a couch or table leg. Real rubber tires provide great traction on smooth surfaces.
Grand Emporium (set number 10211), released in March 2010, is the fifth set in the Modular Buildings series. The set contains 2182 pieces, was priced at MSRP US$149/149€ and is recommended for builders 16 years of age or older. Modeled to look like a realistic early 20th Century department store, the set includes a realistic exterior with an ice cream stand, store window displays, window washer platform, and rooftop billboard. Interior details for the three-floor building include an escalator, dressing room, and a wide assortment of “merchandise.” It is built as a block corner building, similarly to Café Corner, Palace Cinema and Brick Bank. There are 7 minifigures, including two that are decorated with blank faces to look like mannequins.[16]
I built this in a modular manner, all three floors come apart to see the interior detail. All of the floors are fully tiled. This custom building was a part of my LUG display at a major annual Christm…
Debuting in 2007, the Lego Modular Series is one of the most popular Lego series ever. The buildings are called “modulars” because the floors lift off to reveal decorated interiors and the buildings themselves can be locked together to create streets and entire cities.
Below is a list of LEGO sets that are at risk of retiring soon in and around the 2018 calendar year. It is organized into sets that are at a high risk of retiring soon, medium risk, and low risk. Note that LEGO retirement dates are not an exact science and all sets that have been available for sufficiently long can be discontinued at any time, with no notice. Brick Bank (set number 10251) is the eleventh set in the Modular Building line and is the shortest Modular in height and the fourth block corner building. It was released on January 1, 2016 and priced at MSRP US$169/149€. This set contains 2380 pieces. Like the Palace Cinema it contains only two furnished floors (albeit with high ceilings compared to the norm).
Love the blog, and have almost this entire series (missing the original two). Any idea on what the second exclusive set will be? I’ve got the toy set, and just want to know when the second comes out, so I can place another order!
There are a lot of reasons that LEGO might stop producing a set, and I would assume it’s a balance between the cost of doing production runs of the necessary pieces, the projected volume of sales, and their availability of SKUs.

The 3rd image takes those same railing fence pieces, and along with some of those (now rare and pricey) Belville “gingerbread” arches… made a Victorian Gazebo with them. This time I didn’t use any of the sticker parts to hide the “notches”. I sent this image to Jamie Berard 2 years ago (after he ordered my LEGO Sets/Parts Collectors Guide on CD)… and he really liked it… but said that his team of designers were NOT allowed to mix in Belville parts with their designs. I do believe that this restriction has since been lifted… but wouldn’t this make a nice addition in a park adjacent to the Victorian row of designer models?? All it needs is some minifigs, trees… and maybe a minifig brass band! 🙂

6. A few pieces were missing in stage 2. Not many, and some we could substitute from other pieces he had…but 3 pieces were unique and vital to hold together a decorative feature on the face of the building, and no doubt we will have to call for those, too.

Take lots of good photos. Spread your LEGO pieces out on the floor or on a tabletop and take a picture of the whole lot. If you have sorted out minifigures or other pieces, take close-up photos of them. Take overlapping close-up photos of the spread-out lot. Some things to avoid in your photos are:
Castle Lego. Need I say more? This is a good set of Lego that I purchased as a gift. The young boy that I purchased this for seems to really enjoy the set. They are standard, high quality construction. This differs from the castle Lego set I had as a child. It appears that the company has made many improvements both in functionality and aesthetics. The castle still opens in the rear to create a long walled structure. This newer castle includes a secret escape, better draw bridge and portcullis. They have taken the original and improved it.
I kept the enemy at bay for a long time. I was no stranger to stepping on sharp little pointy plastic pieces in the middle of the night; I had little brothers. So, I told my sons that we were not going to have Lego.

This looks to be a complete Geonosian Fighter but not 100% sure. I have included the manual for this set. You will get what you see in the photos. The manual shows a ray gun and that is not included h…
You forgot that the MechDragon is on sale. But then that’s not really retiring soon. What I don’t understand is why the V-wing, Vulture Droid, and AT-TE are retiring so early. The V-wing and Vulture droid are 2014 releases even! 😕 Not that I’m complaining, I have the V-wing already and my brother has the AT-TE, so we’re good.
My friend Sharon is an expert at building and buying LEGO. She explained to me a couple great ways to save money on bricks. While a set is great, having a variety of pieces to build with on your own is even better.
I think this is mainly a problem with series like the Modulars. Relatively few people paid attention to the firs couple of the buildings, but when it became clear that it was going to be a series, wanted to collect all of them, including the ones that were now retired. There are also new people who are just getting into LEGO due to the popularity of The LEGO Movie who missed out on some great sets. They can do as you mention, and just focus on the newest sets, but if it is a series like the Modulars and they really would like to have a full collection, their only option is to shell out $$$s or to piece together the set themselves.

“lego orthanc retired lego black”

If you find yourself in that position there are a couple of websites selling retired sets for way cheaper than eBay or Amazon. You can try http://www.chowrentoys.com in the US or Brick-a-brac-uk in the UK.
I was checking out the online LEGO shop today and noticed several sets that were marked retiring soon and was quite surprised. Specifically the Rebel Combat Frigate and Doctor Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum which both came out in August 2016.
The Millennium Falcon set comes in at the top of our list simply because it’s freaking awesome.  It is among the two or three most recognizable images from the entire Star Wars franchise, so it easily checks the nostalgia box.  The set is huge at 1329 pieces and takes a few hours to complete.  Inside the box you get the awesome Falcon itself, complete with the iconic holochess board, cockpit, and even spring loaded blasters.  Additionally, you get a wealth of minifigurines including Han Solo, Chewbacca, Rey, Finn, and BB-8 (you get two more, but who cares about those guys?).  The minor complaint here is that this is The Force Awakens version, so you get old Han, rather than A New Hope Han.  That’s easy enough to ignore, however, with the all-around spectacular set included here.
We are pleased to welcome you to our new permanent Bricktraders Shop for fans of LEGO® Bricks, LEGO® Sets and LEGO® minifigures. Its been a long time coming but we are now open at 57 Catherine Street, St Albans 5 days a week.
This is a pretty crazy looking set.  Taken from Attack of the Clones, this set pieces together Obi-Wan’s Starfighter with an impressive hyperdrive module.  The hyperdrive is a blast to play with.  It has a dock for the Starfighter, two spring-loaded shooters and a quick release for the Starfighter.  The Startfighter itself isn’t going to blow you away, but it is a sleek little ship that is very well designed and a fun build.  Not as fun as the hyperdrive, but fun nonetheless.  One of our favorite features of this set are the minifigurines.  Of course Obi-Wan is included, but you also get Jango Fett and a young Boba, which is fantastic.  Rounding out the characters is a R4-P17 droid which docks on the Starfighter.  The build isn’t as lengthy as some others here, but it isn’t exactly a quick task either.  The overall fantastic visual appeal makes this set shine, but the smaller details really set it apart.

Mark had reluctantly agreed to go to the flea market with his wife, as he hated the miles of walking and browsing through junk that he did not want did not thrill him. As they strolled along, a box sat in the corner caught Mark’s eye, and then he saw a rare Lego Mr. Gold figure. Quickly hustling into the stall, he grasped the figure in his hands and offered the vendor 50 cents for it. The vendor agreed and sold the rare Lego minifigure to Mark. Returning home, Mark was fascinated with his find, but still not thrilled with the miles of walking. Then, he had an idea. Instead of going to flea markets in hopes of finding Legos to add to his collection, he could search on eBay. When he did, he found many reliable sellers offering rare Lego minifigures, pieces, and bricks with convenient shipping options. The best news was that he did not have to walk miles to find rare Lego sets and figures.
Thanks so much for posting this. We have many Lego fans here at our house. I was so stuck on what sets to get for my girls and many stores are sold out on the sets my girls want and Amazon is charging way too much. Sad. So, I was glad to read your tips so off we went to the Lego store to pick up bricks as well as ordering a book through your link. Thanks for the help.
Of the four current “UCS” sets, I prefer the Slave and the TIE. I think of the other two as “play sets” and they just don’t look as cool. Of course, the higher price points of Hoth and the DS might make them rarer and better investments. However, given this is the 3rd (?) large DS model, I’m wondering if it will be all that sought after in retirement. What do you guys think?
Despite my earlier hesitations, the tinkling sound of Lego pieces being sorted and scooped is a happy sound to me, a remembrance of hours and hours of intense, creative play by my sons. And now my youngest daughter.
Have you ever thought about opening a Lego set and selling the figures and bricks separately? Find out if you can profitably part out a Lego with basic tips and how to information. Brook Johnson uses Ahch-To Island Training, set 75200 as an example.
Read Carefully- They will likely write that in the description -“this is a picture of a random sampling”.  Also be aware that you may not be getting “only” LEGOs.  If you don’t want to see Mega Blocks in the bag, read carefully.
I think you would have to look at it in an entrepreneur/business man’s point of view to understand it. If people aren’t buying enough of the sets to keep a good profit after a few years, Lego might find that they would make more money using the same pieces if they were to discontinue the set and release a new one people would buy more of. If you already have an old set that is still on the market, there wouldn’t be much point in buying a second or third. (assuming its for personal use.)
